Susan Lucci has an interview with People Magazine to promote her collaboration with the American Heart Association. Lucci had a cardiac emergency in 2018. Both of the arteries leading to her heart were blocked and she needed surgery to have stents put in. Although shes done work with the AHA for over a decade, shes been a more passionate advocate for womens heart health since. In a new interview with People, Lucci has some advice for women about putting ourselves first, particularly when we are having symptoms we shouldnt ignore.
While chatting with PEOPLE about her ongoing collaboration with the American Heart Association and its Go Red for Women initiative, the 75-year-old actress opened up about how important it is for women of all ages to be in touch with their health.
As women, we are prone to not want to bother the doctor, she tells PEOPLE exclusively. We are prone to taking care of our children, of course, and our husband, or significant other, and our homes, she continues. And we get busy, and we are not even on the to-do list.
Recalling how she initially downplayed milder symptoms that eventually led to an emergency heart procedure, Lucci feels a responsibility to share her story.
Ive had the opportunity to say to women, give yourself permission to take care of yourself. You are the caretaker for everyone around you, and if youre not well, theyre not going to get taken care of either, Lucci adds. So be guilt-free, put yourself on that to-do list. Your wellbeing is great for you, and its great for everyone you love, who loves you
I think a lot of us, men and women, are on call. We are on call all the time. People are calling your name. People need things from you. And you want to do everything You are just pulled in a million different directions, she adds. So find a quiet moment. Maybe a quiet 15 minutes, or a quiet 10 minutes, whatever you can find, thats just a quiet time for you where nobodys calling your name and there are no demands on your time or your brain.

I like that shes advocating for this and its important to pay attention to our symptoms and seek help quickly. Luccis Wiki says that shes a Republican. Learning that made me think about systemic issues. As women we ignore our symptoms because were often dismissed and discounted by doctors. Its worse for women of color and its worse for women who are overweight. So many womens medical conditions are blamed by doctors on weight or stress. This is not just about advocating for ourselves and taking more time for self care. I understand what shes saying and these things are necessary too, but theyre just part of it. Its also much easier for white women and women who dont have to worry about missing work or being able to afford going to the doctor. I do like what she said about how we dont even put ourselves on the to-do list.
People had a story recently about a British woman with undiagnosed ovarian cancer living in Australia. She was continually told to lose weight for her symptoms. A woman I know had her appendix burst over a week after she first sought emergency treatment for textbook appendicitis and was told it was her gallbladder. Shes doing OK now, but she could have died if she did not seek care at another hospital. We dont want to bother the doctor, but more than that we dont want to go through the indignity, yet again, of being told its all in our head.

Susan Lucci is 71. I don?t know why this surprises me, as my mother jokes that All My Children was my unofficial babysitter while I was growing up in the early 1970s. The Daytime Emmy winner (who will always be Erica Kane to me) still looks amazing, and, of course, she works hard to maintain a fit lifestyle.
In in interview with Women?s Fitness, Susan said she works out six days a week. I work out five days a week and now I feel inadequate. She admitted, ?I try to take one day off, because youre supposed to take a day off.? Note she said ?supposed to?. She doesn?t lock away her sneakers on that seventh day, confessing that she?ll ?always do something, because I find my body craves it. My body craves pizza and Buffalo wings. Life?s not fair sometimes.
One thing she and I have in common is the time of the day devoted to staying in shape. She says, I like to work out first thing in the morning because then I know, no matter what happens for the rest of the day, I?ve done something good for myself. After a long day of writing, of which posting here is the best part of it, I just want to collapse on the couch, so if I don?t go to the gym in the morning, I don?t workout that day. Working out in the morning also alleviates the feeling of guilt I carry with me all day if I don?t go. I totally understand Susan saying its a craving, because I feel the same wayeven though my relationship with exercise can often border on abusive.
Susan practices Pilates moves to stay in shape (on a chair she promotes), but has always made fitness a part of her routine, especially after preparing to complete on Dancing with the Stars. She told the magazine, ?I knew I?d have to step up my program, to get an even stronger core to be dancing on the show.? And, as a result of stepping it up (the lady did a pretty mean mambo), she now has flat abs and she?s proud of them.
One thing the petite lady may not be able to achieve through her workouts is her height. She jokes, ?I want to be 5?8, and I?m hoping I can get there through stretching?right now I?m five foot two on a good day. I think she?s perfect just the way she is. I loved that such a small statured woman was such a good, larger than life soap opera villainess. it?s good to see my ?babysitter? living her best life.

There’s news that soap opera All My Children may get canceled by ABC after 41 years. Deadline is reporting that ABC may be the last network to start cutting soaps (NBC has canceled Passions while CBS has canceled Guiding Light and As the World Turns) and that All My Children will be the first to go. This is scary news of course for fans of the long-running series featuring reigning soap queen Susan Lucci. ABC sort-of denies it, though, and just says that “The Deadline.com piece is just the latest story in a long line of stories about this same topic.” That’s a non-denial denial, and makes it sound like they’re annoyed that someone got that scoop and reported it before they’d made a decision. Rumors of cancellation are circling around the popular show that finally delivered Susan Lucci her Daytime Emmy. Various reports claim that ABC is considering reducing its afternoon drama lineup from three to two hours to make room for a new talk show, which could send AMC to the chopping block.
But a rep for ABC Daytime shoots down the claims, telling PEOPLE in a statement, “The Deadline.com piece is just the latest story in a long line of stories about this same topic.”
As of now, the rep adds, “There is no change for the current ABC daytime schedule.”

If they can squeeze more ratings out of yet another talk show it make sense to cut the soap I guess. It’s a shame because a lot of people love to watch them. I used to watch All My Children in the late 80s back when I was in high school. Now there are so many more options for daytime viewing in that we have all these cable networks with unique programming to choose from, and of course there are DVRs and shows on demand. I haven’t seen it AMC in years, but they’ve been rather groundbreaking in that they were the first soap to feature any sort of gay plotline, and have had lesbian and gay characters.
Speaking of same sex relationships on soaps, Days of Our Lives is finally going to feature some sort of gay plotline, according to Entertainment Weekly. It’s been on for 45 years and it’s about damn time. There are plenty of hot men on that show who I would love to see get together, but we can expect them to go for the easy lesbian story to start.
Oh and coincidentally, Susan Lucci has a new memoir called All My Life which comes out on March 29. Check out these pictures - she’s 64 years old! (Of course she’s had work done, but she hasn’t gone overboard.)
