As we?ve covered, the Governors Awards happened over the weekend. The awards have become a must-attend event for anyone working a serious Oscar campaign, which is why we saw the likes of Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, and a slew of other stars and filmmakers hoping to become nominees in January. And Kevin Costner was there, dressed in a look overall best described as, ?Colonel Sanders does formalwear.? Kevin was presumably representing the only film he released this year, Horizon: An American Saga ? Chapter 1; The Audience Strikes Back? by not showing up at the theaters. Even after Kevin left his fan-favorite series Yellowstone to self-finance this passion project. The film bombed so badly in July that Horizon 2 was yanked from its August release date. But never fear! Kevin is determined to get the second movie to us, as he told E! News at the Governors Awards, along with his thoughts on the fan reactions to his character?s exit on Yellowstone:
The death of Kevin Costner?s Yellowstone character recently sent shockwaves beyond the boundaries of Dutton Ranch, with many viewers expressing outrage over how John Dutton III was killed off in the Paramount show.
But for the two-time Oscar winner, who said he actually pitched series creator Taylor Sheridan two different endings for his character, he?s not shaking in his boots over the fan backlash.
?Fans have a voice in things,? Costner exclusively told E! News at the 2024 Governors Awards in Los Angeles Nov. 17, ?and they choose to follow stuff.?
The 69-year-old added that he had pitched his character?s death to Sheridan ?a while back,? but it was ultimately up to producers on the exact way John would meet his maker.
?As Costner quipped, ?They do what they want to do. That?s fine with me.?
The actor announced his departure from the Western series in June, explaining that he was ?not going to be able to continue? filming due to scheduling conflicts with his four-part movie anthology Horizon: An American Saga.
?It was something that really changed me,? Costner ? who starred on Yellowstone for four and a half seasons ? said in a statement of working on the series. ?I love the relationship we?ve been able to develop and I?ll see you at the movies.?
The first installment of Horizon premiered in June. So, when can fans expect the second chapter of the saga to drop?
?I?m gonna try to figure that out,? he told E! News with a laugh. ?I make these things, I will figure out how to get it to an audience.?
Costner added that Horizon: An American Saga ? Chapter 2 will ?tie in? with the first installment, while he?s ?trying to figure out? the third and fourth chapters.
?Everybody has an impress that maybe things come to me easily,? he noted. ?I think projects do come to me. But when it comes to something I want to do, sometimes it?s a bigger struggle.?
But Costner is up for the challenge.
?If this is what it has to be for me to bring a movie to America and around the world,? he continued, ?that?s what I?ll do.?
[From E! News]
Ok, Kevin, the struggle is real. And thank you, Sherlock, for clarifying that the second film will ?tie in? to the first. For what it?s worth, I?ve been tracking the saga of Kevin?s American Saga for months now, and this is least certain he?s sounded about Horizon 3 & 4. What does ?trying to figure out? mean exactly? Are we talking financing, scheduling/logistics, or story-wise? Because if basic storylines are still up in the air, I?d say it?s time to cut the covered-wagon loose already! But no, clearly Kevin is committed to gifting America ? and the world at large ? with these films that will stand the test of time, he swears! He?s the Don Quixote of films about American westward expansion, and his quest cannot be stopped. It?s particularly funny after Kevin spoke so clearly about fans having ?a voice in things,? and a choice in what to follow. But that?s just for Yellowstone, not Horizon? Perhaps if he builds the movie theater, the audience will come.

No Yellowstone storyline has been more dramatic or enduring than star Kevin Costner walking away from his rumored $3 million an episode gig as John Dutton ? the frickin? lead! I?ll try to pare it down to the basics: the fifth season of Yellowstone was supposed to be the final of the series, and it was split into two parts. The last episode of the first part of Season 5 aired in January 2023. Then the Hollywood strikes happened, and Kevin hit the horizon to film his passion project. Last Sunday, the first episode of the second part of Season 5 aired, and right off the bat they dealt with the exit of Kevin?s character. A day later, Kevin appeared on The Michael Smerconish Program on SiriusXM, and he was more than a bit shady with the way Taylor Sheridan & Co. wrote off John Dutton. Warning: Spoilers ahead!
?Sometimes I?m like just a passenger in my life, you know, there?s a lot going on,? he told host Michael Smerconish. ?So no, I found out about it this morning actually.?
He explained that he was not aware that the shocking death was in store for his character, though he suggested ?a couple? of ?possible endings? for John over the years.
?No, I didn?t see it. I heard it?s a suicide, so that doesn?t make me want to rush to go see it,? Costner said.
But he did defend the team behind Yellowstone despite the fan backlash to his character?s passing.
?Listen, they?re smart people. Whatever they?re doing, they?ll figure it out,? he said.
As Smerconish pressed Costner over whether or not he was ?displeased? with John?s fate, Costner simply said, ?Maybe it?s a red herring. Who knows? They?re very good. And they?ll figure that out.?
He later denied that he quit Yellowstone at all. He explained that he tried to stay on the show despite it undergoing several changes after Season 5, Part 1. But he said he eventually had to back out because he had his own ?obligations? to the crew of ?300 people? working on his passion project, Horizon: An American Saga.
?I didn?t really have to leave anything behind,? he said. ?There was room, but it was difficult for them to keep their schedule. It seemed to be, it was just too difficult for them to do it.?
?I didn?t leave. I didn?t quit the show,? he outrightly clarified at one point of the interview. He said he ?accommodated? them on the unspecified changes they wanted to make to the contracts, but, ?finally when they wanted to change it a third time, because I had my obligations to do, I had 300 people waiting for me, I couldn?t help them anymore. I just simply couldn?t help them. But I didn?t quit the show.?
[From Decider]
Full disclosure: I have never seen an episode of Yellowstone. I do, however, follow the dramatic plot points that have been playing out off screen by the show?s main characters. Like Taylor Sheridan suing Cole Hauser over similar coffee brand logos, or Forrie J. Smith (what a name!) getting himself kicked off a flight for refusing to sit next to a passenger wearing a mask. So all that plus Kevin Costner?s tense, drawn out exit, and oh my gosh these cowboys are such drama queens! On his character?s death: ?They?ll figure it out.? Dude, they killed off your character. What is there to figure out? And I can?t even get into that whole ?I?m just a passenger in my own life? malarkey. But I think my favorite moment is Kevin insisting that he did not quit the show, you guys! He simply decided to stop physically showing up and receive a paycheck for the series he was starring in ? see the difference?! Look, Kevin may be entirely right that they kept switching contracts and schedules so he decided to honor a prior commitment. But the actions he took are still the definition of quitting.
And of course, lest we forget, the passion project he left Yellowstone for was Horizon: An American Saga, eleventy hours of Civil War-era westward expansion. Boy, did Kevin show them. He had 300 people waiting on him to direct it; if only there had been 300 people who wanted to see it in theaters.

Kevin Costner has his epic Horizon film series in his field of dreams and he?s gonna beat that wagon-pulling dead horse if it?s the last thing he does. Horizon: An American Saga ? Chapter 1 got bad reviews and bombed at the box office in July. Then Chapter 2 had its August release date pulled, at which point Kevin spun it as what he wanted all along anyway, so that it could have a world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. And so it did last Saturday, out of competition. While there, Kevin reassured the film?s dozens of fans that he?s still dead set on coming out with the as-yet unfilmed Horizon: An American Saga ? Chapters 3 and 4. I?ll give him this: it really does feel like a saga.
Thoughts from Sherlock: Kevin Costner spoke on the scrapped theatrical release of his second ?Horizon? film on Saturday during its Venice Film Festival press conference, saying that ?it probably was a reaction? to the underperformance of the first movie at the box office. ?It didn?t have overwhelming success,? Costner said of the first film. ?I?ve had a lot of movies that way, that have stood the test of time.?
His desire to continue is only increased: ?Sometimes when things don?t come to us easily, we want to just step away. But there?s something in me that only increases my desire when something is not working,? Costner said. ?It?s a story, it?s a piece of entertainment that I think can stand the test of time. When I feel rejection, unlike anybody else, when I open my eyes from my disappointment, my desire is only increased.?
Horizon is historical, not political: When asked if ?Horizon? contains a lesson for the current state of America as it heads into a presidential election, Costner said ?it?s not a message politically to anyone. ?Horizon? is not a message to my country, it?s a reminder to my country of how difficult it was that people made this journey,? he said. ? The film continues the events of the first chapter in the epic, which is described as a ?multi-faceted depiction of the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West.? In addition to directing and starring, Costner served as a co-writer with Jon Baird (?The Explorers Guild?) and produced through his Territory Pictures.
Thoughts from Sisyphus: ?Horizon? is intended as a four-part series, meaning that two more films are in development. Principal photography on ?Chapter 3? began in May and is expected to wrap next year. As the press conference wrapped, Costner said all of the ?Horizon? films have been written and teased ?Chapter 3? as ?devastating.? ?You get to know all these people, and life keeps coming at them and you will see that,? he said. Of making the third film, Costner said he has to ?hurry and not let the rock fall back downhill, I gotta go put my hands on it again and start to push it up.? However, the path ahead for ?Horizon? still seems to be uncertain. ?I don?t know how I?m going to make ?Three? right now,? he said. ?But I?m going to make it.?
[From Variety]
Kevin Costner has a dream and it will not be trampled on! All he wants is to give us 12 hours of slow-paced storytelling about Civil War-era westward expansion divided into four films to be screened in theaters instead of comfortably streamed at home! So sure, he had to spend $38 million of his own money to make the first installment, and put up the mortgage on his Southern California mansion as collateral. And sure, the movie-going public rendered their verdict by handing the first movie a disappointing $11 million opening weekend (compared to its $100 million budget), prompting the August release of the next movie to be nixed. But does that mean he should read the room, cut his losses and stop? YES NO! Look, it?s always a good message not to let the naysayers deter you. But how much of his own wealth does he plan on throwing at this endeavor? Will he at least budge and let go of the theatrical releases? Because the first film?s numbers improved once it went to VOD. To quote a great film that?s stood the test of time: if you put it right in people?s living rooms, they will come.

The saga of Kevin Costner?s Horizon: An American Saga continues? For those who haven?t been paying attention to Horizon (of which there are many), a quick recap: Costner walked away from his $3 million-an-episode gig with Yellowstone to film his passion project, which he stars in, directs, co-wrote, and produced with $38 million of his own money and a mortgage on his Carpinteria mansion. Oh, and his great vision for Horizon was a series of four films, each with a running time of two-to-three hours. The great payoff for Costner would be when audiences flocked to see the first installment, H:AAS ? Chapter One. If you film it, they will come. Only the people didn?t come, and the critics who had to see the movie panned it. Chapter One bombed so badly that the second film lost its mid-August release date. But I guess Costner has been working the phones, because lo and behold, H:AAS ? Chapter Two will now premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September:
Kevin Costner?s ?Horizon: An American Saga ? Chapter Two? is set to world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September after its U.S. release was pulled.
The Western epic?s second chapter was scrapped earlier this month from its planned Aug. 16 release in U.S. theaters after ?Horizon?s? first installment, which carried a $100 million budget, earned only $11 million on its opening weekend.
?Chapter Two? ? which Costner again directs and stars in alongside Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone and Danny Huston ? will bow on the Lido out-of-competition on Sept. 7. The world premiere will be preceded earlier the same day by a screening of the first ?Horizon? movie, which launched from Cannes in May to a seven-minute standing ovation.
New Line Cinema?s ?Horizon: An American Saga? is a multi-faceted depiction of the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. In addition to directing and starring, Costner served as a co-writer with Jon Baird (?The Explorers Guild?) and produced through his Territory Pictures.
?My dream was always to show ?Horizon: An American Saga ? Chapter Two? at the Venice Film Festival,? Costner said in a statement. ?The fact that now they have decided to show ?Chapter One? earlier in the day and then the world premiere of ?Chapter Two? that evening shows not only their belief in how the two films work together but their support of a director?s vision. I?m indebted to Alberto Barbera for his courage and leadership in committing to this cinematic journey.?
Added Barbera: ?It is a great pleasure and honor to host the world premiere of the chapter two of ?Horizon: An American Saga,? alongside its chapter one. This late addition to the lineup of the Venice Film Festival pays a heartfelt and respectful tribute to the visionary project of a great actor and director, who invested himself in the epic reconstruction of the years crucial to the found of the country, digging beyond myth in search of authenticity capable of restoring a piece of history in its complex and contradictory reality.?
In Variety?s review of the first film, chief film critic Owen Gleiberman wrote: ?Instead of unfurling a Western saga in a solid powerful arc, Costner serves up three hours of anecdotes, cross-cutting among groups of characters, dropping in on situations that are dropped just as quickly, taking a skittery overview of life on the range, and asking the audience, in many cases, to stitch together the backstory of what they?re seeing.?
[From Variety]
That was a slick move by Variety to reprint their lukewarm review at the end there. Also slick, or at least curiously worded, was Venice Film Festival Director Alberto Barbera slipping into his statement that Horizon is a ?late addition to the lineup.? And Costner finagled not only the world premiere of Chapter Two, but also a screening of Chapter One earlier in the day? I hope there?s a decent break between the films! I once went to a double feature of The Godfather I & II in a single day; there were five hours between the start times. The tight turnaround was intense, but it was an offer I couldn?t refuse! (Thank you, thank you, I know that was well done.) Bear in mind, also, that Costner is supposedly just starting production on the third film, and who knows about the fourth. In the meantime, I?m assuming Signore Barbera will soon be moving into Costner?s Carpinteria mansion. That was the bargaining chip, si?

| Kevin Costner & Christine settled their divorce, she 'got more' than the prenup | Added 454 days ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

This genuinely shocked me: Kevin Costner and Christine Baumgartner settled their divorce, just a few months before they were supposed to head back to court for what looked like an especially messy fight over the prenup. When we last checked in on the Baumgartner-Costner divorce, the elderly family judge was taking Costner?s side across the board, and the judge awarded Christine with significantly less money than she was asking for in child support. They were also gearing up for battle over who will pay Christine?s legal bills, and none of it was looking good for Christine. It didn?t even seem like she had a leg to stand on when it came to nullifying the prenup. So why would Kevin settle? I guess he low-balled her and she just took it, knowing that if she pursued the fight to nullify the prenup, she would end up an even bigger loser in court.
It may be the most shocking turn of events this year the divorce war between Kevin Costner and Christine Baumgartner is now history, because they have SETTLED UP!!!
As improbable as a settlement seemed, there were signs it might happen. As we reported, Kevins legal team, headed up by disso queen Laura Wasser, won a series of legal skirmishes, particularly in the child support department. Wasser submitted paperwork to the court saying Kevins monthly obligation should be $63k a month. Christine wanted $248k a month, and after a 2-day evidentiary hearing in Santa Barbara earlier this month, Judge Thomas Anderle sided with Kevin.
The judge also made it pretty clear the prenup would be enforced, and if Christine challenged it she would have to repay Kevin more than $1 million and pay his attorneys fees for the prenup fight. Apparently, Christine saw the handwriting on the wall and agreed over the weekend to the terms of a 3-page settlement letter.
The 2 were married for 18 years and had 3 kids together. Christine filed for divorce back in May and asked for joint custody. Kevin also asked for joint custody. We dont know the details of the settlement, but it looks like Christines $850,000 fee request is off the table.
Although the prenup is enforceable, our sources say Christine got more than what was prescribed in the doc for the sake of settlement.
[From TMZ]
Yep, Christine got hosed, not only by her ex-husband but by her lawyers too. I thought she had all of her ducks in a row, but Christine and her lawyers were no match for Costner, Laura Wasser and Costner?s bot-farm and crisis management team. I would imagine the settlement was probably little more than twice the prenup payout, meaning $2 million. Much of her settlement will be eaten up by legal fees as well. But hey, at least she?s out. At least she?s free and she can start over. Maybe rent a little beach shack and work part-time at a jewelry shop or something. Man, she really got the short end.

People are mad at me for supporting Christine Baumgartner in her divorce drama with Kevin Costner! I get it, Christine comes across as somewhat ridiculous in much of the coverage. But I am on her side it?s clear that Costner was financially abusing her for years, all to keep her entirely dependent on him. Now that she?s broken free, he?s doing what all abusers do: punishing her, humiliating her and nickel-and-diming her. You also have to remember that part of the reason why Christine looks ridiculous in the coverage is because Costner has a world-class PR team and crisis management team, because he learned from what happened during his first divorce. In any case, Christine and Kevin were in court last week for a child support hearing. Christine wanted the court to order Costner to pay roughly $168K a month in child support. He countered with an offer of $60K a month and he told Christine to get a job. The judge agreed with him. Christine is getting hosed by this judge, ISTG.
Kevin Costner just found out how big of a check he has to cut to his estranged wife Christine Baumgartner each month for child support and hes going to be happy. The judge in Kevin and Christines divorce ruled Friday that Kevins going to be forking over $63,209 thats exactly what he said was appropriate. $63k is less than half of what she was getting in temporary support $129k. And remember, she originally asked for $248k a month.
During Fridays hearing, Kevin took the stand and answered some questions from his lawyer, Disso Queen Laura Wasser, saying Somehow in this unusual world we didnt make it and Im sorry. Kevin said his biggest concern going into the relationship with Christine was having kids and getting divorced because he had 3 kids with his first wife and got divorced. Kevin and Christine ended up having 3 kids and getting divorced too.
Remember Christine originally asked for $248,000 a month in child support, but Kevin claimed she was padding the bill simply because he could afford it with Costner claiming the actual amount she needs for their kids is around $51k a month. In the end, the judge went closer to Kevins figure.
The actors testimony also featured Kevin saying he wanted to pass his properties down to his kids and he said, I dont hide money from my wife.
[From TMZ]
?I dont hide money from my wife. I mean? maybe ?hide? isn?t the right word, but Christine definitely didn?t have money for anything beyond the household needs and children?s needs. He was mad at her for buying a car before she filed for divorce, that?s how much he was controlling her financially. He?s mad that one of their friends let her borrow money, that?s how much he was controlling her financially. Anyway, I can guarantee that Christine isn?t going to get the prenup nullified either. So she?s going to have to ?make do? with the $1 million she got from the prenup, plus the $63K a month in child support and that?s it. Ten bucks says this judge will tell her that she has to pay for her lawyers and Kevin?s lawyers too.

Kevin Costner and Christine Baumgartner?s divorce is certainly one of the messiest celebrity divorces we?ve seen in a while. This one is not being adjudicated quietly by some private judge or mediator. It?s spilling out in open family court, with their lawyers dueling in legal filings. I?m still rooting for Christine, but I think she?s going to get reamed when it comes to nullifying the prenup. Which is probably why she?s arguing that she needs much more in child support:
Kevin Costners getting off easy paying $129k per month in child support according to Christine Baumgartner who wants that number increased to ensure their kids keep living large when theyre with her.
Christine filed docs, obtained by TMZ, asking the court to reconsider the amount of child support Kevin pays due to 2 factors 1. making sure the kids enjoy the same lifestyle with both parents, and 2. what shes learned about how much money Kevins been making. She lays it out in the docs, explaining their 4 children live in a beach compound with their dad thats worth between $65 million and $95 mil and they also fly private on luxury vacations with Kevin.
Youll recall, Kevin took the kids to Aspen last month right after Christine had them in Hawaii. She says Kevin needs to pay sufficient child support so that the children can go on comparable vacations when they are with her. This is true even if the child support payments also improve Christines lifestyle.
Christine says thats simply the standard required by California family code. Based on that alone, she says the $129k/month wont cut it, and shes instead estimating $175,057/month. And by the way, Christine says thats a deal because that higher amount will not be sufficient to replicate Kevins lifestyle, but it will be sufficient to allow her to provide a lifestyle for the children which is relatively comparable.
Now, as for Kevins income she says his average cash flow for the last 2 years was $19,248,467 each year, or more than $1.6 million each month. Based on them having 50/50 custody of the kids, she claims California guidelines require Kevin to pay that $175k/mo. shes requesting.
[From TMZ]
By the letter of the law, she?s correct. There?s a formula to how child support is calculated, and while it seems downright silly, the court absolutely takes into account ?parents should be able to give their kids comparable vacations.? While Christine?s calculations are for Kevin?s previous income, while he was on Yellowstone, his finances are probably going to take a hit now that he?s left a popular and lucrative series. So? it?s really up to the court to figure it out. Meanwhile, Christine and Kevin are also arguing about affairs:
Kevin Costner, in new divorce court documents, says he did not have an affair while adding that he does not know for a fact whether estranged wife Christine did. Ahead of an upcoming hearing on child support and the November trial to determine the validity of their premarital agreement, Christines attorneys are asking for more documentation proving Kevins finances.
As an exhibit in her latest request for order, obtained by PEOPLE, Christine?s attorneys included Kevins lawyers responding to asks from his estranged wife?s side, including one regarding any expenses paid by you, or any person at your request or on your behalf, relating to any extramarital romantic relationships.
Kevin, 68, objected to the request as his legal team wrote that it is propounded only for purposes of harassment, is overbroad as to time period and subject matter, burdensome, oppressive and impermissibly compound. They added that the request is seeking information not relevant to the subject matter since there is no community property between them in this split.
Additionally, they argued, that Kevin does not know for a fact if [Christine] engaged in any extramarital romantic relationships before separation and, if so, whether she spent any of his money or charged any expenses in furtherance of her affair(s) on credit cards he paid. His side added, [Kevin] has no responsive documents for extramarital romantic relationships in which he engaged because he engaged in none.

LOL. This is why Christine hired that forensic accountant (and charged it to Kevin?s credit card). She wanted a better idea of what kind of money he has, and whether he?s lying about this or that. I have no idea if Costner was cheating (if past is prologue, well?) and I have no idea if Christine was cheating, but holy sh-t, this is so deliciously messy. Costner really should have just given her an eight-figure settlement and one of his 10 houses and called it a day.

Over the weekend, Page Six ran an exclusive about Kevin Costner and Christine Baumgartner?s divorce, taken from some of Christine?s filings to the court. Christine hired a forensic accountant basically as soon as she decided to file for divorce, and that accountant provided Christine with a detailed summary of just how much money Costner has coming in and how much he?s spending per year. Costner isn?t overextended, but he?s spending way too much money, in my opinion. I suppose the point of filing those financials with the court is to emphasize just how badly Costner intends to screw over Christine if the prenup is upheld. Costner?s spending probably also justifies Christine?s request for $248K a month in child support. Meanwhile, the Sun?s sources now claim that Costner was really mad when Christine served him with divorce papers, because? he intended to file first??
Kevin Costner was stunned when he was given divorce papers ? as he wanted to serve them himself. We can reveal the actor thought he and wife Christine had agreed to have an amicable split. He broke the news of their impending divorce to their three children in a family summit at a restaurant near their 115 million mansion in Montecito, California. But the 68-year-old Bodyguard star was ?blindsided? the next day when Christine, 49, seized the initiative.
A source said: ?Kevin sat his family down, told them he and their mum were getting a divorce and his lawyer was getting the paperwork drawn up. He wanted everything to be peaceful for the sake of his kids and told Christine he didn?t want a messy divorce because he?d already been through one. Then first thing the next morning, boom, Christine sneak attacks him and serves him with her own set of divorce papers. Kevin was so shocked. Christine has since made him look terrible, and has continued to do so.?
She has claimed her husband ? worth 200million ? told their kids they were divorcing in a ten-minute Zoom call.
[From The Sun]
Yeah, Christine told the court that Costner told the kids on a Zoom call from Las Vegas, and now he?s trying to say that he did it in person the day before Christine filed? I don?t believe it, any of it. When Christine filed, he was not acting like a man eager to go through another divorce. His team was doing furious damage control and publicly pleading for Christine to change her mind. Even if Christine and Kevin had spoken about a separation before she filed, it?s not like she could have arranged everything last minute as a way to surprise Costner she clearly planned out everything, hired the forensic accountant, hired the divorce lawyer and had all of her ducks in a row. This is clearly Costners bruised ego. Hell hath no fury like a man whose wife charged a forensic accountant and divorce lawyer to his credit card.
