I first saw this story over at Lainey Gossip, because People Magazine is harder to read after their redesign and the new stories get buried fast, right? They changed their format and I have better luck just reading their Twitter feed. People has an interview with Kiefer Sutherland, which they parceled out over a few days. He’s promoting his country album and his new ABC show, Designated Survivor. Kiefer’s character, the US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, is the lone survivor and President after an explosion kills the President and all his cabinet during the State of the Union Address. The show is doing incredibly well in the ratings and it’s getting decent reviews as well. My mom watches it and while she’s not enthusiastic about it she says that it’s decent, if you like Kiefer Sutherland.
In Kiefer’s interview he discusses his well known drinking problem. (Recap: this, this, this or this.) He knows that alcohol causes most of his problems but he insists that he doesn’t “drown his sorrows” and says he’s not giving it up. In another part of the interview, which People published later, Kiefer said that he gave up riding a motorcycle when a cop said something to him one time. Makes sense. Kiefer wrote this song, “Can’t Stay Away,” about alcohol, not a woman, and it’s quite revealing as People’s Jess Cagle points out.
On alcohol
It’s something I’ve always enjoyed. I was never the guy, if something was wrong in my life or something wasn?t right, I didn?t go drown my sorrows. One of the things I love to do is go out with my friends and tell stories and have a bunch of drinks. That?s true. Having said that, I can also look back on my life and tell you very squarely that the only bad things that have ever happened to me in my life have been because I like to go to bars and have drinks with my friends. I would be lying if I told you that there weren?t moments where I felt I let it get away from me. So it?s kind of been a push and pull through my life. One of the nice things about writing was that was a nice way to confront that for me… I want to be a certain person too and I have found at times I have let [alcohol] stop me from being that person. So it’s a battle.
Cagle: Clearly you’re very high functioning. If it’s hard to manage why not just get rid of it?
[I] enjoy the times too much, and the memories. I have, at times, for stretches of time. But at some point, I?ve made a decision, right or wrong, for myself that I would rather work really hard so I could still have some of those times. Than to just simply stop. That?s a choice I?ve made and I live with that choice.
Cagle’s Prompt: “I think I’m really bad at…”
Not a great motorcycle rider. I do [like to ride and] go on long trips. I was riding a motorcycle in San Francisco and the cop pulled up next to me, looked over and said, ?Looks like that bike?s riding you,? and I said ‘Yeah, it’s pretty big isn’t it?’ I remember ‘I should probably get rid of this.’ And I did.
[From two articles on People]
So Kiefer has multiple publicized incidents in which he’s so drunk he’s tackling a Christmas tree, headbutting a guy, going shirtless (which isn’t that bad but still) and generally getting into trouble but he’s not about to quit. One day, he’s out riding his motorcycle and a cop tells him he’s not riding properly and he gives it up. As someone who used to drink and still rides a motorcycle – it’s a lot easier to ride when you’re not hungover AF from the night before. Plus, it sounds like his bike was just too big for him. Those large heavy bikes can be really hard to maneuver so maybe he just needs something that’s easier and more responsive. I get it though motorcycle riding is dangerous and booze is too but it’s harder to give up. Plus drinking is fun until it’s not and some people can drink moderately. I don’t think Kiefer is one of those people, but we haven’t heard about him having an incident in a while so maybe it’s working for him.

We’ve witnessed a lot of debauchery over the years from one Kiefer Sutherland. I personally love the guy and would relish the opportunity to have one or two drinks with him, but he definitely gets carried away to the point where he’s been known to end up with his pants off in any given pub. A few years ago, things got really hairy when he was kicked out of a London strip club, racked up a $700 pre-lunch bar tab, and headbutted a fashion designer. Most notably, Kiefer screwed up big time by getting popped with his second DUI and, consquently, he served a 48-day sentence in jail.
Subsequently, Kiefer started dating Siobhan Bonnouvrier, an Allure style director who seemed really, really good for him. In fact, he stopped getting into trouble, and the two enjoyed vacations to Italy where stuff like this happened:
Unfortunately, Kiefer and Siobhan have recently ended their romance, and The Enquirer reports that his friends are now worried that Kiefer will go batsh-t crazy with the bottle again:
Kiefer Sutherland has turned the page on his three-year romance with a magazine style director — and the breakup is threatening to plunge the “24? star back into his wild, self-destructive ways, say worried friends.
The actor’s girlfriend Siobhan Bonnouvrier was a stabilizing force for the 44-year-old Hollywood hell-raiser, who served a 48-day jail sentence in 2008 stemming from a second DUI conviction and probation violation.
A short while after being freed, the twice-married star hooked up with low-key Siobhan - who kept him on the straight and narrow, say sources.
Kiefer was rudderless before Siobhan,” an insider told The ENQUIRER.
“Now with her out of the picture, pals fear he will be back to trawling bars looking for hookups and boozing.
“Kiefer does best when he’s in a committed relationship. Siobhan was great for him. She encouraged him to focus on his acting, and nearly got him to the altar.
“But ultimately he didn’t want to be tied down, so Kiefer broke things off.”
In May, the actor wrapped up his run in the Broadway play “That Championship Season” and returned to Los Angeles to work on a film version of the hit FOX series, “24.”
“Now people are taking bets on how long before he’s in trouble again with the law,” confided the insider.
“He needs a good woman to keep him straight. Friends are begging him to consider getting back with Siobhan - but for the time being, he wants to be single.
“Everyone has their fingers crossed, hoping Kiefer won’t start losing it again now that he’s on his own.”
[From Enquirer, print edition, August 1, 2011]
Hopefully, Kiefer won’t go down the public boozing route again, but the man enjoys his liquor, so there’s a decent chance that he’s already there. At the very least, he should be smart enough not to get behind the wheel again after getting loaded. Like, tackling Christmas trees is all fine and dandy, but hiring a driver is absolutely necessary for the ride home. However, I think that Kiefer really learned his lesson with that second DUI, and I respect the hell out of any celebrity who doesn’t try to get out of jail time like a certain Lohan. Instead, Kiefer kept his mouth shut, put his head down, and he did his time. Now, if he can only stay out of trouble in the future.

I was never a 24 watcher. Nothing personal against Kiefer Sutherland or any fans of the show, but I just never got into it. That being said, I am a fan of Kiefer Sutherland. To me, it?s like the affection I have for Amy Winehouse. I know both Kiefer and Amy are probably hopeless addicts/alcoholics that do dumb sh-t on a regular basis, but I think they?re both talented and I want them to do well.
Anyway, Kiefer was chilling out in Portofino, Italy this weekend, and there are many photos of him hanging out shirtless and doing funny things. He was with his girlfriend - can you imagine dating Kiefer? I?d imagine it would be equal parts fun, hot and terrifying. But you?d get to hit this - would it be worth it? Kiefer is 44 years old, and I?d say that he?s still in really great shape, which surprises me. He?s muscular and toned, but he doesn?t look plucked and sucked, you know? I like that. He looks like a guy who takes care of himself for the most part, but still loves pasta and beer.
So would I hit it? Yes, I would hit it if he and I were a little drunk. I?d hit it for the fun of it. I’d hit it because I love his voice (it’s sexy). I?d hit it despite the fact that Kiefer is steadily morphing into his father Donald (in looks), and although I think highly of Donald?s acting, I?ve never wanted to bone him. But Kiefer? yeah, it looks good to me.

Seemingly recovered after quite the wild night on the town, Kiefer Sutherland was spotted leaving his hotel in London on Friday (April 16).
Swarmed by paparazzi, the "24" actor was escorted to an awaiting ride as he headed off to BAFTA in Piccadilly.
The previous night, Mr Sutherland caused quite a stir - as he was reportedly shirtless while being put in a headlock and getting tossed out of a London strip club.
With the incident occurring at Stringfellows, a source told The Sun, "He went bananas, shouting nonsense and dancing before kicking off when asked to leave."
After wrestling around with security, Sutherland was finally helped out to an awaiting car after a 10 minute debacle.

| Jack Bauer is done saving the world: 24 in its last season | Added 14 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

There’s a joke among hardcore fans of the Fox action drama ‘24? that if everyone actually listened to tough guy Jack Bauer, the show would be called ‘12.’ Through eight seasons of some of the craziest plotlines on TV (one word: Cougar!), Kiefer Sutherland’s iconic character, Jack Bauer, derailed one terrorist attack after another, often sacrificing his personal life, family and sanity in the process. But this season, which many are hailing as one of the series’ best, will be the last. Rumors have been floating around about the show’s cancellation for about a week now, and there was even talk that NBC might pick it up. However, it was confirmed that 24 is over.
Nice knowing you, Jack Bauer. It was good while it lasted.
After eight days seasons of secret agent, butt-kicking goodness, 24 is officially closing its doors on the Counter Terrorist Unit. “This has been the role of a lifetime, and I will never be able to fully express my appreciation to everyone who made it possible,” series star and executive producer Kiefer Sutherland said in statement Friday.
“While the end of the series is bittersweet, we always wanted 24 to finish on a high note, so the decision to make the eighth season our last was one we all agreed upon.”
Now about that 24 movie…
“Looking ahead to the future, Howard Gordon and I are excited about the opportunity to create the feature film version of 24,” Kiefer explained (yay!). “But when all is said and done, it is the loyal worldwide fan base that made it possible for me to have the experience of playing the role of Jack Bauer, and for that I am eternally grateful.”
Still, the potential movie doesn’t make a canceled hit show any easier. Fan favorite Mary Lynn Rajskub (Chloe) immediately tweeted the news to fans in two solemn sentences. “Just found out we got the word officially,” she wrote. “This is 24’s last season.”
[From E!Online]
As a fan since Day One (literally), I’ve seen the show have its ups and downs, and there were even times I vowed to never watch again. But overall, it has remained one of the most exciting, suspenseful shows on network TV - and you can acutally follow the twists and turns (ahem, Lost)! I’ll definitely miss it, but I agree - let the show go out on a high note. I am still wondering how they plan to pull off a movie in the show’s signature “real-time” format. Does that mean the movie will be called “2??

| Kiefer Sutherland is still crazy, wore a dress on 'The Late Show' | Added 14 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Kiefer Sutherland showed up on The Late Show last night? wearing a dress. Yeah. I didn?t see the huge deal about it, because let?s face it, Kiefer is kind of crazy (but still kind of hot), and wearing a dress on Letterman isn?t even in the top ten (get it?) dumb things Kiefer has ever done. Anyway, Kiefer wore a dress because he lost a bet. Because I hear that gambling is a really good way to kick alcoholism, right, Kiefer?
Gamblers beware: losing a bet can make you look foolish. Just ask Kiefer Sutherland.
The hard-core action star of Fox’s “24? sat with David Letterman on the “Late Show” Wednesday night dressed in a hideous peacock-inspired dress after losing a bet to a buddy.
“I lost a bet over the weekend,” he told Letterman, the embarrassment displayed clearly on his face. “I was so sure New England was going to win, that I told a guy who used to be my friend that if New England lost, I would wear a dress on ‘Letterman’.”
The Patriots lost to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, 33-14.
“And so, here I am,” he noted, sheepishly.
Sutherland, who gets credit for going through with the bet, accessorized the dress with combat boots and a long-sleeved white t-shirt.
Letterman offered the 43-year-old actor $1,000 to wear the outfit on the subway.
“Riding the subway would be easier than what I’m going through right now.”
Although the conversation eventually turned to Sutherland’s return as Jack Bauer on “24? this Sunday, the dress made serious conversation impossible.
“This may be the most humiliating moment of my life,” Sutherland said with a smile. “And I’ve had quite a few to choose from.”
At the end of his segment, Sutherland ran off stage as band leader Paul Shaffer played him out with Aerosmith’s “Dude looks like a lady.”
[From The NYDN]
I could be going too hard on Kiefer, but I lecture because I love. I love him and his father, I think they?re both amazing actors, and it pains me a little that Kiefer has such a screwed up personal life. By the way, if you think the dress is bad (which it is), check out what Kiefer wore to the studio - a swear, this is a denim suit. I spent too much time looking at the cut of that jacket, and that bitch is tailored like a suit jacket. Kiefer actually picked that out for himself, you know he did. That boy isn?t right in the head.

| Kiefer Sutherland's $700 bar tab before lunch | Added 15 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

It?s generally acknowledged that Kiefer Sutherland can party hard. He?s got several stints in rehab under his belt to prove it. There?s this story going around from TMZ about how Kiefer blew $700 on his bar tab from 7 in the morning until 1 o?clock in the afternoon last week. Yes, your jaw is supposed to hit the floor. But despite the way their intro paragraph makes it sound, they acknowledge he was actually just being a good guy.
Kiefer stopped in with about 30 members of the crew from 24 ? after what must have been a very early shoot. He paid for everyone?s drinks, which came out to $500 (or about $16.66 per person on average); and he left a $200 tip.
Kiefer Sutherland racked up the following $700 bar tab between 7am and 1pm. Yes, those times are correct.
We’ve learned the “24? star and members of the show’s crew popped into The Spot in San Pedro, California last week after wrapping up a shoot nearby — and they were ready to get their drink on.
According to an employee at the bar, Kiefer was throwing back scotch & Cokes and bought drinks for everybody in the joint — roughly 30 people. The total damage: $500. No food … all booze.
The drinks may have been stiff, but Kiefer wasn’t — we’re told he tipped $200.
FYI: We’re told Sutherland — who has a few DUIs under his belt — was responsible this time and used a designated driver when he left the bar.
[From TMZ]
It?d be extra nice if the story were about how Kiefer nursed some ginger ales and made sure everyone had a good time. While it doesn?t seem like he?s taking his sobriety seriously, and least he?s taking his responsibility to the law more seriously. And I guess that?s something. If I were on the crew, I would have been sort of nervous about the whole thing. It just seems like he?s asking for trouble and tabloid headlines. Everything considered, it sounds like Sutherland was gracious all the way around ? TMZ has some funny photos taken at the bar.
Here?s Kiefer dining at the Spotted Pig in New York City on October 1st. Images thanks to INF Photo.
