| Julia Louis-Dreyfus on the Seinfeld reunion: I don't know what the hell Jerry's talking about | Added 396 days ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Last week we talked about Jerry Seinfeld hinting at a Seinfeld reunion during a standup show. Jerry seemed to suggest that some kind of show is in the works that will somehow address the 1998 series finale, which fans and critics were disappointed with. Setting the divisive finale aside, I suggested that the only viable path for this project was making it about Elaine Benes, because Julia Louis-Dreyfus is the classiest, most talented one of the bunch. Oh, and she also hasn?t made an ass of herself like her former costars in the intervening years. Well, Julia was at the London Film Festival this week to promote an indie film Tuesday (that?s the name of the film, not the date of the premiere, and don?t worry it?s all kosher ? SAG-AFTRA gave the film a waiver) and of course she was asked about Jerry?s recent comments. She very succinctly responded: ?I don?t know what the hell he?s talking about.? Nor do any of us, Julia.
Speaking on his standup tour in the US on Saturday, Jerry Seinfeld told a Boston audience he ?has a little secret? about the show, whose 1998 finale was watched by 76 million viewers in the US when it first aired, but whose plot ? the four friends go on trial for wisecracking when a man is mugged in front of them ? proved divisive.
?Something is going to happen that has to do with that ending. It hasn?t happened yet,? Seinfeld said. ?Just what you are thinking about, [co-creator] Larry [David] and I have also been thinking about. So, you?ll see.?
His words triggered heated speculation all week about what form such a show might take. Stars Jason Alexander and Michael Richards are yet to offer comment, but speaking to the Guardian on Wednesday, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who played Elaine Benes on the programme, which ran between 1989 and 1998, professed ignorance about any such endeavour.
?Yeah, I just saw [that news] last night,? she said. ?And I don?t know what the hell he?s talking about.?
Of all the Seinfeld actors, Louis-Dreyfus is the one who appears to need such a return the least. As well as starring in subsequent hit TV shows such as Veep, the actor has won acclaim on the big screen, most notably for her roles in Nicole Holofcener?s cerebral and sensitive comedies Enough Said (2013) and You Hurt My Feelings (2023).
Her latest project further dramatically expands that range. Tuesday, a contemporary fairytale about grief, had its UK premiere at the Lonon film festival earlier this week, picking up considerable Oscar buzz for Louis-Dreyfus?s performance.
She plays a single mother in denial about the terminal illness of her teenage daughter, Tuesday played by Lola Petticrew. When the grim reaper arrives in the form of a massive, talking macaw, both women try to defer the inevitable by bargaining, battling ? and vaping with ? Death.
Critics praised Louis-Dreyfus as ?a revelation? ? particularly in sequences that see her unleashing a primordial energy unfamiliar to regular fans. ?She?s a performer whose radiant ferocity has never been in doubt,? wrote the Hollywood Reporter, ?but until now we haven?t [sic] seen all sides of the prism.?
[From The Guardian]
?Of all the Seinfeld actors, Louis-Dreyfus is the one who appears to need such a return the least.? This is such a quintessentially British, understated way of saying Julia has grown leaps and bounds past the rest of them. I stand by my earlier statement, if they don?t get Julia on board then it?s not worth watching. I?d rather see this new film next year, despite its grim premise, and experience the catharsis of Julia ?unleashing a primordial energy.? Billed as a fantasy-drama, Tuesday kind of sounds like Yorgos Lanthimos meets Ingmar Bergman based on early reviews. Is it likely to make me howl with laughter like Veep? No (my notorious history of laughing at horror films notwithstanding). Will I still tune in to see Julia play chess against a tall, talking, macaw-embodied Death? Definitely.

| Julia Louis-Dreyfus on being told she had cancer: 'all the tropes are true' | Added 403 days ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Julia Louis-Dreyfus found out she had breast cancer one day after winning an Emmy, her sixth consecutive for playing Selina Meyer on Veep and eighth overall for acting. Julia announced her diagnosis in 2017, and is now Julia sharing more about the moment when she got the call that day six years ago. While appearing with journalist David Remnick at the 2023 New Yorker Festival last Friday, Julia spoke candidly about the way she responded to her doctor over the phone, and also described the powerful memory she said got her through the treatment that followed.
?I started laughing. Well, because the night before, I had won an Emmy. And so, I came downstairs and ? the Emmy was there. It was like on the dining room table. I?m coming down to get coffee. My cell phone rings, and it?s my doctor saying, ?Guess what, you have cancer,?? she recalled.
?And I?m like, ?Huh? What?? And so, it was a very bizarre juxtaposition,? she continued ?And, of course, I did laugh, and then I became hysterical, crying, because I was terrified, as most people are, or as all people are if they get a diagnosis like that.?
She said she was fortunate to have her family rally around her as she began to navigate the unknown. ?I have a very strong and supportive family, and for which I am eternally grateful, upon whom I relied ? sisters, husband, my sons, my mother, my mothers, my stepmother, everybody,? she said.
Still, she continued, ?I was deeply terrified because who wouldn?t be? I mean, all the tropes are true. You know, you get that call and it?s like, ?What, me? No, no, no.? I mean, you can?t imagine that something like that would happen to you.?
To get through her grueling chemotherapy sessions, Louis-Dreyfus told Remnick she focused on a memory of a particularly unnerving moment from her past to motivate her.
?I?ve said it before, but many, many years ago, I was on a boat with my husband. I was swimming in the water. He came to the bow of the boat and he said, ?Jules, I don?t want you to panic, but there?s a shark in the water, so you need to come back.? And I was far away from the boat,? she explained.
?And so, I just saw the ladder and I started swimming towards it, and I made the decision not to look around me at all. I was just going to stay looking at the ladder. And that very much applied to how I got through my cancer adventure ? was sort of looking at the ladder. Just let?s get this done, let?s get there.?
[From People]
Ok, first of all, I hope her doctor didn?t actually say ?Guess what, you have cancer,? but that?s just Julia?s way of highlighting the absurdity of going from Emmy win to breast cancer overnight. But I do appreciate the license she takes for storytelling purposes, because the way she recalls the moment is so vivid I felt like I could see each moment happening. The confusion to laughter to hysteria to tears (a trajectory you know she could act the sh*t out of, by the way). And while she mentioned speaking about the shark story before, it was new to me, and holy cow was that a powerful image. Again I find Julia?s language incredibly cinematic. It wasn?t her inclination to be public with her cancer diagnosis, but she?s given great comfort to others by sharing the many facets of her personal experience.
To end on a selfish note: I miss Veep so much. Julia said it was freeing to play Selina Meyer ? it was also freeing to watch her! But I guess what I also miss is when it was just a funny show on Max (ne HBO) and not, you know, our actual politicians.

Downhill, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell, came out a couple of weeks ago. It did not do well at the box office or with critics, but the subject matter was kind of a bummer. The trailer makes it look like something that would kill it on Netflix, but that people wouldnt want to pay for. (See also: Marriage Story.) It?s about a couple having marriage problems after a family ski trip to Austria. Julia, Will and the movie?s co-writers Jim Rast and Nat Faxon (The Descendants), were on Late Night with Seth Meyers. They talked about filming in Austria and Julia told a funny story about being surprised to see old fat naked dudes in the sauna.
Nat Faxon on the mad scramble to get to the ski lifts in Austria
They have an aggressive way of getting on the lift. [In America we line up.] There it?s just an opening and it?s a massive crowd. People [put] their skis in between your skis. It?s so tight.
Julia Louis Dreyfus was surprised at the naked saunas
I did go to a spa. They?ve got a whole sauna and steam life there. I?ve got a towel, I take it off, I sit. Two men in their 50s, 60s, quite overweight and talking a mile a minute come in completely naked. I?m so shocked. I didn?t really understand [the coed part]. I just put my head down, prayed to Jesus Christ I didn?t know them particularly well and skidaddled. It was bad.
[From The Late Show via YouTube]
They joked afterwards that people got mad at them for shutting down the ski lifts. Plus Jim Rash told a story about trying to grocery shop and being surprised at how fast they checked you out. He said a guy at the store told him during a bad experience ?don?t worry they hate everybody.?
I have told this story many times, so I?m sorry if you?ve read it before. I used to live in Germany where they saunas are nude, it?s considered rude to wear a towel (you sit on one of course) and they?ll tell you to take off your bathing suit. You just get used to it because the saunas are amazing. I miss them so much. It grosses me out to see people in gym clothes in the sauna now. So it?s surprising to me when people still don?t know about this.
Also, I was so frustrated in Germany by the lack of polite lining up to do anything. There is a different culture around that, especially compared to the south where I live now and where people will go out of their way to let you ahead of them. I don?t want to offend our German or Austrian readers by passing judgment, but this was a culture shock for me and I had a few words with people over it.
Heres that interview and its a fun watch. I remember when Jim Rash, Nat Faxon and Alexander Payne won the Oscar for adapted screenplay for The Descendants in 2012. Their category was introduced by Angelina Jolie in that iconic high slit dress and Jim clowned on Angelina by sticking his leg out just like her.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus has a great interview in InStyle. She is promoting her movie with Will Ferrell, the Force Majeure remake, Downhill. I think they are both really funny so I?m worried that I will raise my expectations too high with this film. It?s the first time they?d even met, let alone worked together. The movie story revolves around an avalanche at a ski resort (Julia?s character protects the kids while her husband, Will?s character, run away). Although avalanches have always occurred in nature, climate change is making snowbanks less stable. So, among the many topics covered, InStyle asked Julia about climate change and she said we didn?t have to worry about it because if we didn?t get our sh*t together, we would all be extinct anyway (we could fit the line about getting our sh*t together in the headline).
On having doubts about filming Amy Schumer?s last f*ckable day skit, which addresses ageism in Hollywood: All of a sudden I thought, ?Wait a minute, why is this funny?? (But) that?s just the kind of thing I like to skewer.
On forcing herself to speak up: I?ve always been very opinionated, but, honestly, I?m constantly fighting that female kind of mode: ?Should I say it? I?m sorry!? But in my head, I?m always like, ?Do it, do it, do it
On Elaine Benes (her Seinfeld character) being a ground-breaker: I was one of four players, the rest of whom were men, and we were all equally unlikable. And I wasn?t selling romance or sex appeal ? it was about something else. That was really important.
On going to Veep table reads during her breast cancer treatment: That was fantastic. Because it kept me hopeful, and I could focus on work instead of?trying to stay alive. You know, making a funny show is a pretty joyful undertaking. As opposed to, say, getting chemotherapy toxins in your veins.
On fighting for health-care post breast cancer: I had felt strongly about the issue before, but now, here it was, stark and real. The notion that someone might have a diagnosis like that and have no insurance, no means to get treatment, was inconceivable to me.
On climate change: The truth is, the planet is going to be fine ? because it?s going to eradicate the human population if we don?t get our shit together. There has to be a complete recalibration of how we conduct ourselves and do business.
[From InStyle]
The whole write-up is delightful. Julia?s voice always comes across so strong in interviews. The sad part is, she?s right about climate change. We cannot sustain life at the rate we are destroying the planet. And yet, I am constantly shocked at the number of people who stick their heads in the sand about that fact. Like, can we build a biosphere for all the climate change deniers? They can destroy their bubble while we set about trying to save our planet.
Much more optimistic is her comments about how attending the table reads for Veep gave her hope. Lord knows when I?m struggling, I?m grateful to focus on something else. I imagine being able to focus on something that not only brought Julia joy, but she knew would bring joy to so many others. To get to do that surrounded by people who adored her was probably just what she needed. I?m so grateful she gave us that last season.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus appeared on Ellen yesterday to promote her new film with Will Ferrell, Downhill. While she was there, Ellen asked her if she had thoughts about the Super Bowl outcome. Julia said her sons were crushed because they are, ?huge 49er fans,? but she?s not a big football fan so it didn?t make that much of an impact on her. However, what did stand out to her, was the ignorance of our current president, with his imbecilic tweet placing the Chiefs in the wrong state. Julia said that as much as she loved Veep, their stories could never compete with the idiot who runs our country.
[From ellentube via Just Jared]
The part about the Super Bowl and #45 comes on at 4:15, but this is what she said:
I am not a football lover, so I was doing other things. However, I did see the tweet Donald Trump put out and Claire McCaskill, former senator from Missouri, retweeting it. It is so extraordinary. ?Great state of Kansas.? Kansas City, Kansas. Yeah, he really gets this country. Wow, I thought that was absolutely incredible. Anyway, that tweet was up for about 12 minutes, live. Then it was deleted. And I have to tell you, if I were doing Veep right now, it would be really fun to script those 12 minutes between him launching the tweet and it getting deleted. What an idiot. Idiot! It?s so humiliating.
Doesn?t it make you miss doing Veep, though?
Well, it does, and it doesn?t. I mean, I have to say, I think he?s doing a better job of our show, except to say that it, in fact, isn?t even remotely funny. But it does make me miss it. It was super fun. It was just hard to compete with that crap.
I, for one, would contribute to whatever Kickstarter was out there to get Julia to script those 12 minutes. They could just do a short and post it to Twitter. If you watched the show, you can picture exactly which characters where in the room when Selena was told she?d tweeted the wrong state and who was flying down the hall to do damage control. It would be a riot and I?m willing to bet every single cast member would come back for it. Ellen went on to call Veep one of ?the best shows ever on television. Ever ever ever.? I generally try to stay away from superlatives like this but honestly, when it comes to Veep, I agree. The series finale, for sure, was one of the best I?ve ever seen.
But, Julia?s right. It isn?t funny when this is our reality. I?ll be honest, I don?t really care if a POTUS knows anything about football or any other sport, let alone where the teams are from. But I do care if he or she does due diligence before speaking out publicly about it. How hard is it to ask an aide to Google a sports team? Even though I am convinced he made a big deal about the state because he thought he was throwing a jab at California, it?s disrespectful to KC and the Chiefs after their big win, and I say that as a heart-broken 49er fan.
It?s Missouri you stone cold idiot. pic.twitter.com/O1cAAOFsJ6

Veep didnt take home any Emmys for its seventh and final season. Its been nominated 59 times and has 17 wins, so Im sure theyre not broken up about it at all. When the cast presented on stage Julia deadpanned that she thought she was supposed to present alone, which was awesome. Then when she presented with Tony Hale they joked about her loss while they were both in character and I loved it. Julia didnt beat Cloris Leachmans record for most acting Emmys but she has plenty of time. Im sure shell get another starring role on a series, whether its cable or streaming.
Julia was in gold sequin Oscar de la Renta. She often plays it safe with her fashion so I loved to see her vamping it up. The color could have been a little bolder, but thats minor. In her two purple carpet interviews, on E! and Fox, Julia admitted that she was nervous. You couldnt tell at all when she was on stage. Shes such a seasoned actress.
Presenter and nominee Amy Poehler was also in gold, in a Greta Constantine jumpsuit with a black tie. I enjoyed seeing the pants and jumpsuits at the Emmys, but this is cut oddly. I like the top thought and think it would work separately with cigarette pants. Also she overaccessorized.
Nominee Natasha Lyonne was in a Gucci gold lam&eatute; look that just covered her head to toe. I might like this gown if the top wasnt so fussy. It doesnt need bishop sleeves AND a giant dippy bow. Also, I didnt realize that Amy Poehler was a co-writer on Russian Doll, which was robbed. At least it got nominated in several categories. So many people gave up on that show after the first episode as the dialogue was too smarty pants, but I stuck with it on Hecates recommendation and am so glad I did.

As we know, Julia Louis-Dreyfus was diagnosed with breast cancer last fall. Because Julia is awesome, she used the opportunity to appeal for healthcare for all and has continued to do so on her social media. Julia is not only a good advocate and an engaging actress, she’s also a mother to two boys in their 20s. When she first announced her diagnosis, he son Henry, 25, posted this very sweet note to Twitter:
