Did you know that Christian Dior had a baby sister who was a part of an underground group of the French Resistance during World War II? I didn?t! Her name was Catherine, she was the muse for her brother?s iconic Miss Dior perfume, and her full story was recounted in Justine Picardie?s novel Miss Dior: A Wartime Story of Courage and Couture, which has just been adapted into a 10-part series on Apple TV+. Renamed The New Look, Maisie Williams plays Miss Catherine Dior with Ben Mendelsohn as Christian Dior, Juliette Binoche as CoCo Chanel, and Glenn Close and John Malkovich rounding out the cast. Harper?s Bazaar UK got author Justine Picardie to interview Maisie ? the two never met during filming in 2022 ? about the punishing, very unglamorous task of depicting Catherine?s story on screen:
Again, the art of casting: At 26, Williams is the same age as Catherine Dior when she was arrested and tortured by the Gestapo in July 1944. Catherine had joined the Resistance three years earlier, and risked her life on a daily basis as a key member of a covert network called F2, which gathered intelligence for the Allies. Williams chooses her words with care when she speaks, in a way that I imagine Catherine would have done; and like Catherine, she is thoughtful, giving the impression of being wise for her years. (Nina Gold, the casting director for Game of Thrones, described Williams as an ?old soul? at the age of 12, when filming began on the series.)
On filming concentration camp scenes: ?It was very relentless,? she says; ?the process of doing take after take, it really breaks down your character in a way. It?s not for everyone, but for me, I like to get lost in a role, and keep on pushing until we complete a scene.?
This sounds very Joan of Arc: Even when Williams is almost wordless on screen ? and Catherine?s silence was integral to her courage, given that she refused to give the names of her comrades in the Resistance to the Gestapo, thereby saving their lives ? her presence is powerful, and propels the narrative onwards. And the physicality of Williams? performance is startling: her head was shaved, to mirror Catherine?s brutalising arrival at Ravensbrck, where the women underwent a dehumanising process that turned them into nameless numbers in the Nazi death camps. Williams also lost 12 kilograms [26.5 pounds], in order to realistically portray Catherine?s emaciated appearance when she returned to Paris at the end of the war, close to death, ravaged by pain and haunted by the suffering of the camps.
Her weight loss regimen was insane: This regime was carefully overseen by medical professionals, with regular blood tests and measurements of her heart rate; yet it sounds gruelling. ?I was eating very little, meditating all the time, burning candles and incense in my apartment.? Much of the weight loss, she says, came from sweating out fluid just before filming ? in the same way the boxers and jockeys reach their target weights for the day of a fight or race. ?I had to be up at 4am to start sweating. The night before, at about 7 or 8pm I was allowed to have something salty and dehydrating ? some smoked salmon and a tiny glass of wine. Then I had a boiling-hot bath with lots of salts in it. And I sort of levitated to bed and slept for maybe three hours, and woke up and had a handful of nuts. I wouldn?t be able to sleep through the night at this point. I kept waking up and feeling like a marble inside a bottle, rattling around??
What got her through the intensity: ?There was a lot of feeling restricted, almost like sleep paralysis, dreams of being trapped and attacked, and horrible visions of men in uniform.? At the same time, she adds, she understood the importance of maintaining her belief in the more positive aspects of the story. After all, Catherine Dior made a new life for herself as a rose-grower in Provence, drawing solace from the natural world, while her brother created a legacy of enduring beauty. ?Every day of filming was a reminder that we were portraying a story of the horrors that humans are capable of inflicting on one another, but also the magic and the hope and the love? Ultimately, we wanted to make a show that was uplifting.?

There?s a lot more covered in the full article, which was a very compelling read. In these excerpts on her acting preparation, I feel like Maisie gives pragmatic answers without dwelling on the torture of it all, as some actors are wont to do (I leave you to fill in those blanks). Maybe it?s a British quality, but she seems just to list the facts of what she did ? and quite eloquently, that line about being ?a marble inside a bottle, rattling around,? lingered with me ? yet without adding too much commentary on the cost of it. That being said, this was a severe physical transformation. 26.5 pounds may not sound like much, but Maisie is tiny! She can?t do something like this for every project, not to mention the weight loss components will get harder with age (I speak from experience). But what a fantastic role to land and redefine herself with post Game of Thrones. I?ll be tuning in. And not for nothing, I?m very curious to see how the dynamic is depicted between the siblings.

I really believe that among the unknowns cast at the beginning of Game of Thrones, Maisie Williams will be the first to break free from her character, career wise. Not that I don?t think the others aren?t talented, but Maisie has a depth to her that I don?t see often in former child actors. It turns out her maturity extends past just her acting ability. Maisie recently appeared on the Happy Place podcast in which she discussed mental health. Specifically, Maisie addressed feeling the need to behave perfectly because she was a child actor and yet, on the inside, she was tearing herself apart.
Maisie Williams is getting candid about her mental health.
During a recent interview on the Happy Place podcast with Fearne Cotton, the 22-year-old Game of Thrones actress shared that she felt pressure to act ?perfect? as a young celebrity.
?I was so set on trying to look like I was really grown up and that I wasn?t going to ruin my life and that I was going to be a good actor who did all the right things,? Williams said. ?It did take a lot of trying to be squeaky clean ? I was a real teacher?s pet, but on the fame spectrum and not school.?
The star then said that she went through ?revelations? in the last year and realized she wasn?t ?happy doing this and pretending everything was fine.?
?That wasn?t a public thing but after going through that, now I?ve sort of tried to be a lot more genuine and it just becomes a lot more relaxing after that I think,? she explained. ?You just drop it all and that?s when you can just really have fun.?
Though she says she?s grown a lot in the last year, Williams admits she still has a ?journey? ahead.
?I still lie in bed at like eleven o?clock at night telling myself all the things I hate about myself,? she shared. ?There?s still a journey, I think. But at least dropping the act and just being who you truly are, I think that?s definitely a first step.?
?I went through a huge period of my life where I?d tell myself every day that I hated myself,? the actress revealed. ?It got to the point where I?d be in a conversation with my friends, and my mind would be like running and running and running and thinking about all the stupid things I said in my life and all of people who looked at me a certain way and it would just race and race and race.?
Williams then shared that she started to look ?within? herself to figure out why she was having those negative thoughts.
?As soon as you start digging, you start asking yourself bigger questions than ?Why do you hate yourself?? but it?s more like ?Why do you make yourself feel this way?? I think the answers to all of these questions really are within you,? she explained.
[From People]
I?m going through a particularly stressful combination of situations at present. So stressful, it?s taken a physical toll. After decades of being told I was too distant and emotionless, I vocalized my stress in hopes that it would alleviate some of it. Almost as soon as I did, people in my periphery tried to get me to stop. They used my kids, my husband and anything else they knew was a hot button for me to get me to shut it back down. So I kind of identify with Maisie?s feelings about appearing one way and how that was, in some ways, thrust upon me. I certainly identify with thinking about all the stupid things I?ve ever done and focusing on my flaws, but it breaks my heart to hear that Maisie?s hating herself. She had so much pressure, both internal and external, so early in life. It sounds as though she?s recognized this and is addressing it. If she has that figured out in her early 20s, then I?m not worried how she will turn out. It sounds like she?ll come out on top.

| Maisie Williams is going to be Sophie Turner's bridesmaid: 'It's very exciting!' | Added 6 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

As Kaiser mentioned, Sophie Turner is positioning her wedding to Joe Jonas be a proper House of Stark affair. Not only does she dream of winter nuptials, Maisie Williams, who plays Sophie’s sister on Game of Thrones, will be a bridesmaid. Stark standing with Stark, shoulder to shoulder, as she becomes… a Jonas.
Actress Maisie Williams will be a bridesmaid in Sophie Turner’s marriage to Joe Jonas, according to an interview with Radio Times.
During the interview, Williams was asked if she was “bidding for a role as bridesmaid” in her “Game of Thrones” co-star’s big day.
“Oh I’ve already got it!” Williams replied, rolling her eyes at the idea that she wouldn’t be asked. “It’s very, very exciting – but it’s kind of bizarre, though.”
Turner and Jonas announced their engagement in October, but no other details, such as a date, have been announced yet.
Williams added during her interview that Turner will likely wait until after they’re done shooting the upcoming and final season of “Game of Thrones” before she starts making any official wedding plans.
But that doesn’t mean Turner isn’t totally amped about her special day.
“I think she’s already letting her little heart wonder and imagine,” Williams said.
[From Huffington Post]
I don’t think Maisie as a bridesmaid surprises anyone who follows the cast outside the show. Maisie and Sophie bonded from the start and have a well documented friendship. They both got a tattoo reading “07.08.09? to commemorate the day they met and they celebrate the anniversary each year. In the early days, they filmed silly Vine videos during their downtime together. Sophie said their friendship had a lot to do with being the same age and having a similar background. The two went through the same experience, as Sophie described, “we’ve had the same struggles in terms of dealing with body image and puberty and growing up in the public eye.” In light of that, It’s kind of wonderful they had their bond to get through such an extraordinary adolescence. Maisie did not give details about Sophie’s wedding but I imagine that’s because Sophie hasn’t done any proper planning. Like Maisie suggested, I think most cast members have put their lives on hold until the series wraps. Which means we get to plan it! I’m insisting on faux-fur capes and a dire-wolf procession as Kaiser suggested. Beyond that, I might suggest ice sculptures of Ramsay and Joffrey’s heads and a red velvet cake of Littlefinger that Maisie could slice, starting with the neck. But I’m flexible.
Speaking of post GoT, Maisie is a little worried about her career. Sadly, she believes she does not fit traditional beauty standards, noting how shallow the industry is. However, she added that “it’s sad that you only get to see one type of beautiful on screen.” I couldn’t agree more and I hope Maisie has a long and fruitful career.

| Maisie Williams on feminism: 'You are either a normal person or a sexist' | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

I feel like we?ve watched Maisie Williams grow up in real time and this may be weird to say, but I feel a strange sense of pride with the woman she?s becoming. She?s a child star with her head on straight. She?s a professional but still age-appropriate. She loves Game of Thrones but it isn?t her whole world. She?s managed to find a great balance and I am proud of her. The Girl has learned. The Girl is promoting the new season of GoT and she gave a long interview to Entertainment Weekly. The Girl teases the new season without blatantly lying to everyone (cough, Kit Harington), and you can read the full interview here. The Girl chats about how everyone is going to love/hate the new season and she shares her thoughts about feminism.
On Season 6: ?Every year I think, ?This is really cool.? But this year, as I opened the scripts, it?s so exciting because nobody knows what?s happening. They?re going to hate it, but love it, and I can?t wait?.they don?t know what?s going to happen. I know the showrunners don?t take [criticism] personally any more and that?s nice. People are outraged by last season, but they secretly love it too ? because they don?t know what?s really going on.
On feminism in real life: ?I got asked in one of my first interviews: ?Is Arya a feminist?? [I was 12 and] I didn?t even know what a feminist was?.And then someone explained it to me. And I remember thinking, ?Isn?t that just like everyone?? And then I realized everyone is not a feminist, unfortunately. But I also feel like we should stop calling feminists ?feminists? and just start calling people who aren?t feminist ?sexist? ? and then everyone else is just a human. You are either a normal person or a sexist. People get a label when they?re bad. Because it works the other way, as well. A lot of men have it hard too.?
Feminism in the world of GoT: ?On the show specifically, it?s always been a constant debate because women are treated badly on the show, and they?re treated well on the show. But it?s the same as the boys and the girls and the men and the animals. The themes are very dark. I get it that people don?t want to watch scenes like that. I understand, and you shouldn?t have to. But that?s the show that we?ve made, and I have no control over what?s written. I think it?s upsetting that so many people have found it upsetting. But I find a lot of things upsetting to watch. I get upset when animals get slaughtered. And lots of people are like, ?But this is worse than that? ? and I never understood that. I think everybody?s allowed to be upset about what they?re upset by. And once people are angry about something, you start worrying about saying the right thing instead of just saying what you mean. It?s very easy to have an opinion. Everyone?s got one. But it?s very difficult to speak up about difficult subjects when people are angry with you. People say: ?Why don?t you speak up!? [and I?m thinking], ?Because you all got pitchforks and you?re ready to kill us!? It?s scary if you say something wrong.
On the internet outrage machine: ?I don?t want to be like, ?Oh, people love to be angry,? because people have a right to be upset about scenes that upset them ? just as much as people have a right to laugh at things that made them happy. Maybe I just have to get a backbone. I?m going to say this in this interview, but I wouldn?t say it with anyone else: I sometimes really worry about speaking up about feminist subjects out of fear of being bashed by women on social media. And there?s something not right there. Yeah, sometimes it?s men too. But there are women who are just nasty. I?m trying to do the best I can. I got a voice. I believe in equality and I know I have more power than the average person to reach people. And I just get petrified in case people are rude.?
[From EW]
She?s only 18 years old and she already has a better grasp of most of these subjects than women twice her age. I absolutely understand what she?s saying about the internet outrage machine and how the fear of lady-on-lady hatred/flame wars can keep her from speaking out about subjects. I also love the way she talks about feminism and how we should consider it the norm, and we should label non-feminists as sexists. Or misogynists. Or douchebags. Or whatever.

Here is Maisie Williams looking worlds away from her alter-ego as she put on a sizzling sartorial display at the Empire Film Awards 2016 in London.
The British beauty ditched the furs and chain-mail for a seriously fashion-forward ensemble comprising of a sequin embellished ivory dress.
