Bryce Dallas Howard has looked stunning while out on the promo tour for Argylle, the latest Matthew Vaughn spy movie she stars in with Claudia Schiffer?s cat. My favorite ensembles have been the Rowen Rose argyle sweater-skirt set and Altuzarra marigold dress matching skirt and top. She?s a bombshell in these looks, no? Which makes it all the more infuriating that Hollywood has cast her as ?the big girl,? with ?big? meaning not sample size. Bryce has always been candid about how she has to source her red carpet looks herself, but she?s reached the point where she?s sick of perennially discussing her size. I don?t blame her. So Bryce has declared that she?s ?retired? talking about her body:
?I?ve retired talking about my body,? the Argylle star tells PEOPLE in this week?s issue. ?My focus is on what my body is doing, what my body is capable of.?
The reflective star, who broke out 20 years ago with M. Night Shyamalan?s The Village and in 2022 wrapped a decade of Jurassic World films opposite Chris Pratt, recalls years spent gently pushing back when asked to lose weight for roles. Now, she?s begun to invite direct conversations before signing on.
?What I found was best is to just be in communication with folks early in the hiring process,? she says. ?What I would say is that, ?If you want to cast me, awesome. But if you think you want to cast me, but 20 pounds less me or 40 pounds less me, that?s actually another actor. That?s not me, and I?m not going to shame you in this moment about this. We need to have a real conversation here because if you?re hiring me, you?re hiring me.??
That included her latest film, Argylle (now in theaters). Ahead of filming director Matthew Vaughn?s new spy thriller, ?I had that conversation with Matthew. And Matthew, was like, ?Yeah, I?m hiring you.?? Playing an introverted spy novelist who finds herself fighting for her life when thrust into real espionage, ?I was even stronger because of it,? she adds. ?I was able to do more because of it.?
Howard has always found it uncomfortable to be the face of these conversations. ?Who I am is someone who fluctuates,? she says. ?I took some time and it took some work and it took some counsel to really realize that dieting is the enemy, for me at least.?
Today, the mom of two focuses on strength ? ?training my body to accomplish X, Y or Z for whatever given circumstances I need to bring to life for a movie.?
She?s also steadily expanding her work behind the camera, directing episodes of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and the upcoming Star Wars: Skeleton Crew after years spent studying the process on film sets.
?I love directing, and it?s as important to me as acting,? she says. ?It?s been really wonderful to lean more into gaining experience, and I love to work.?
[From People]
Bryce is awfully classy and generous to the small-minded producers and filmmakers she references, way more than they deserve. Remember when she said (speaking of the Jurassic World producers) that she was ?asked to not use my natural body in cinema,? carefully phrasing her words in a delicate way I?m sure the producers didn?t show to her? I can understand how she?d want to avoid that experience again, by having these frank conversations at the very beginning. But it?s still so demeaning. ?Are you really sure you want to hire me? Remember, I?m Hollywood fat!? And for the record, I would kill for her figure. Le sigh. I?m so glad to hear she?s directing and really enjoying that side of the camera. I hope she continues to do both, and be the 21st century, redheaded Ida Lupino.

Bryce Dallas Howard is part of the Jurassic World franchise, arguably (or not so much) the female co-lead alongside Chris Pratt. Pratt was a bigger star when the two actors signed their contracts, and Pratt has gotten paid much, much more than Bryce for the sequel films. There have been reports here and there about how poorly Bryce was paid compared to Pratt. In 2018, Bryce talked around that issue, saying that in general, she gets paid so much less than her male costars. Now she?s getting more specific about the Jurassic franchise, but she also gives Pratt some credit:
Reports surfaced in 2018 that Bryce Dallas Howard was making $8 million to Chris Pratt?s $10 million for their work on ?Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,? but Howard revealed in a new interview with Insider that she was actually being paid ?so much less? on the ?Jurassic World? sequels compared to her male co-star. Howard did not reveal a dollar amount, but she did stress that Pratt worked to correct the situation by ensuring she had pay parity on other ?Jurassic World? properties such as video games and theme park rides.
?The reports were so interesting because I was paid so much less than the reports even said, so much less,? Howard said. ?When I started negotiating for ?Jurassic,? it was 2014 and it was a different world, and I was at a great disadvantage. And, unfortunately, you have to sign up for three movies and so your deals are set.?
Howard continued, ?What I will say is that Chris and I have discussed it, and whenever there was an opportunity to move the needle on stuff that hadn?t been already negotiated, like a game or a ride, he literally told me, ?You guys don?t even have to do anything. I?m gonna do all the negotiating. We?re gonna be paid the same and you don?t have to think about this, Bryce.?
?I love him so much for doing that,? Howard concluded. ?I really do, because I?ve been paid more for those kinds of things than I ever was for the movie.?
Howard and Pratt first joined forces for ?Jurassic World? before reuniting to headline the film?s two sequels, ?Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom? and ?Jurassic World: Dominion.? The latter opened in June and has grossed $373 million in the U.S. and $974 million worldwide, massive sums as the box office continues to recover from the pandemic.

That?s actually a really nice story about Pratt? I think it says something about Bryce that she talks to her male costars about money and who?s being paid what, and I think it says something about Pratt that he was listening to her and talking to her about this stuff, plus he was advocating for her in those meetings. One of the best, most feminist-ally things men can do is talk to their female coworkers about money. It helps women negotiate and/or walk away if things are unfair. Even if Pratt had simply told Bryce flat-out what he?s being paid for the movies and for the add-on stuff like video games, that would help Bryce and her agent negotiate. The fact that Pratt used his white-guy privilege to negotiate the same pay for Bryce on the rides and video games is great.

| Let's hope Bryce Dallas Howard didn't have to buy this Johanna Ortiz dress | Added 6 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Here are some photos of Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt at the Madrid premiere for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Bryce?s whole deal one of her main causes is that she rarely, if ever, gets clothes for free. Because she?s just slightly bigger than the average size in Hollywood (the average size is zero or two, where Bryce is maybe a 6 or 8), Bryce doesn?t get to borrow clothes from major designers, and they often won?t alter existing gowns to fit her. So she ends up buying a lot of the stuff she wears on red carpets, and re-wearing those pieces over and over. If I had to do that (and I was a celebrity), I would buy really simple, well-made pieces and invest in some fun accessories to make those simple dresses look different.
But Bryce goes in a different direction. She chose to wear this Johanna Ortiz dress which? first of all, this is a really bad, unflattering dress. I truly hope she didn?t buy this. I hope this is one of those rare moments when she got to borrow something. But if she did buy it? why?? Why would you choose such a notably fug dress that you can?t really re-wear a million times??
Anyway, the other interesting story is about the paychecks Bryce and Chris received for this sequel. I?m not sure what their paychecks were for the first one, but for Fallen Kingdom, Pratt is getting $10 million and Bryce is getting $8 million. It?s a good news/bad news situation with some nuance. Pratt is more of a household name than Bryce. He has more of a ?proven? box office track record. And he?s still only making $2 million more than her. On the other side, by all accounts, they are the two real stars of Fallen Kingdom and you could make the argument that they clearly deserved equal pay. People have very mixed opinions about it I don?t think the pay disparity is that egregious, although I?d be willing to bet that Pratt has some kind of backend deal and Bryce doesn?t, which means he will be getting paid more if the film performs well.

| Bryce Dallas Howard in Victoria Beckham at the BAFTA tea party: striking or ill-fitting? | Added 7 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Bryce Dallas Howard famously buys her own dresses for events, which doesn’t always work out for the best. (To be fair, women with stylists don’t get it right a lot of times either.) In this case I think she’s working this check print green and black Victoria Beckham dress at last night’s BAFTA tea party. The fit is off though, like the top is too big for her and needs to be tailored. She looks like she lost some weight (she didn’t need to, this is just an observation) in that her face looks more thinned out. That could also be the result of whatever she’s been getting done. Bryce came with her dad, director Ron Howard, which was cute!
Here’s Christina Ricci looking fab in a sleeveless blue Carolina Herrera with wide dark blue stripes. I love this so much, but I do like Herrera as a rule. Hecate just got her hair cut in this short piecey lob style, similar to Cate Blanchett’s hair last awards season.
Octavia Spencer was in a merlot Tadashi Shoji skirt and scalloped lace top topped with a black leather jacket. This is a great look and I have to remember to wear a leather jacket over a skirt, that looks so cool. Octavia is nominated for a Golden Globe for best supporting actress for Hidden Figures.
Caitriona Balfe is nominated for a Globe for best actress in a TV series for Outlander, for which she was also nominated for last year, that went to Taraji P. Henson. She’s in Ferragamo and this is a snooze of a black dress but my goodness is she pretty.
Millie Bobby Brown of Stranger Things was in Kate Spade. She’s only 12 years old! This dress is both age appropriate and mature looking and was a nice choice. Her hair is so cute in those soft waves.

| Bryce Dallas Howard in Topshop at Critics' Choice: cute or needs tailoring' | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Bryce Dallas Howard buys her own dresses for events, she’s talked about it quite a bit, but usually they’re designer or at least from Nordstrom’s. So here she is in a yellow Topshop dress with black accent lines which just looks like it needs some tailoring. It’s not bad, it just looks off the rack. Also, it looks to me like she’s had some injectables recently but maybe her makeup is throwing me off.
Emmy Rossum was in this split bodice Armani gown which just looks cheap to me. I think her severe styling, especially that blue eyeshadow, is making it worse. Emmy was there to support her fiance, Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, as Shameless was surprisingly not nominated in any categories. Mr. Robot was nominated in three but didn’t take home any awards.
Rachel Bloom of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was in off the shoulder black Christian Siriano and I’ll say something nice – she looks like she’s having fun.
Hailee Steinfeld is 20 now! I thought she was still in her teens. She seems like she’s everywhere doesn’t she? Hailey wore a black strapless Jason Wu gown with an allover neon floral pattern. This gown is amazing. It feels like the wrong season for this, but that’s a minor issue. Look at her styling it’s perfection.
Gillian Jacobs wore a Delpozo gown which was rather interesting from the waist up with a mod metallic floral overlay but lost the plot by continuing the metallic shapes along the skirt, which was inexplicably split into two pointy sections. Who came up with this? It even has a waffle print fabric. Maybe if the skirt was plain and cut normally this would be cute-ish.

| Bryce Dallas Howard's parents taught her to 'control your kids' friends' | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Bryce Dallas Howard, 35, is still promoting Pete’s Dragon, a fantasy kids’ film in which a feral child has a dragon as a protector. She plays a park ranger who finds the child. It’s been out about a week and a half and is just doing ok at the box office (for a Disney movie) and is currently at number five after opening at number three. I like seeing Howard’s interviews because she comes across as grounded and not full of herself, which is not what you would expect from the daughter of a Hollywood director. Last week, we covered an interview she did with People where she claimed that her mother wanted to make sure that she and her three siblings did not grow up entitled. In a new video interview with People, which you can see here, Bryce was asked for the most important thing that her parents taught her. Her answer was surprising.
When you see a pregnant woman, what is one thing you wish you could tell her?
Whenever I see a pregnant woman, the one thing that I wish that I could tell her is that it doesn?t end when the baby comes out. I thought after I had my first child, that I was like ?I?ll just have the baby and jump out and everything is going to be great.? While it was great because he was healthy, it took a long time to heal after that.
What is your secret to losing baby weight?
My secret to losing baby weight was to not be obsessed with losing baby weight. To focus on what was important which was my child?s health, my health, my mental health. To understand that it takes a year to create a baby and sometimes it takes years to return to that pre-baby state or whatever state you?re in. My body changed a lot after having children. It was really healthy for me to not put focus on it needing to be a certain way and embracing what it is.
What?s the most important thing your parents taught you?
The most important thing my parents taught me about raising kids was to control your kids’ friends. What they said is at a certain point your child?s friends have more influence over them than you have as parents.
What do you miss most about your life before motherhood?
Freedom. Just the ability to be whimsical and say ?oh I?d like to do this today.? Definitely having kids has brought a lot of structure and routine into my life? [but I miss being] spontaneous.
[From Video on People.com]
These questions sound kind of asinine, but I think they’re standard for People videos as I’ve heard other celebrity moms being asked the same things. I really like what she said about how she focused on her health and her children’s health instead of on getting bikini-ready after she had a baby baby. Howard has been open about the fact that she had postpartum depression after her son was born and said she felt disconnected from him as a baby. I think that’s what she’s talking about when she says it took her a long time to heal and that she focuses on being healthy and not perfect.
Also, in terms of controlling your kids’ friends, I never really thought of it that way. I do notice that my son tends to hang out with the other kids with the moms I like the most, but that’s also because they’re the most reliable and easiest to make plans with. So maybe I do control his friends without admitting that’s what I do.

| Bryce Dallas Howard: My mom was vigilant that we not become entitled | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Bryce Dallas Howard has a new interview in People to promote her role as a park ranger in the Disney movie Pete?s Dragon, out now. She?s 35 now, which is hard for me to believe, and has two children with her husband, actor Seth Gabel: son Theo, 9, and daughter Beatrice, 4. Bryce reflects in People about her somewhat unconventional upbringing, for the daughter of a Hollywood director. She has twin sisters and a brother and she said that her mom used to buy them clothing three years ahead so that they could grow into it.
On her childhood with her dad, director Ron Howard
?A lot of folks have asked me, ?Was your dad not around?? It was the opposite. We traveled with him and my mom everywhere. He?d be directing with all four redheaded kids hanging on him.
She grew up in Connecticut and her mom kept them humble
“My mom was vigilant about ensuring we didn?t become entitled just because we grew up in privileged circumstances,? Howard says, explaining that Cheryl had a ?policy? of only buying new clothes for the kids every three years. ?She?d get them really big and hem them, and as we grew she?d let them out. Our school actually had a conversation with her about it because there was a dress code. They were like, ?Things are getting kind of tattered.? And my mom was like ?What?s wrong with that? They?re kids.??
She doesn?t have a trust fund
“My parents didn?t want me to grow up in a situation we couldn?t maintain as adults. There?s no trust fund.?
[From People Magazine, print edition]
That?s admirable that she doesn?t have a trust fund and that her parents tried to keep things as down-to-earth as possible. She?s trying to explain that she wasn?t as privileged as we might assume, but she?s not claiming that she?s self made or that her father?s celebrity wasn?t a huge advantage, which I appreciate. Bryce told People that she strives for that same upbringing for her own children. Also, you rarely hear about Ron Howard and his wife, Cheryl, but they’ve been married for 41 years, since their early 20s.
In terms of the hand-me-down and too-big clothes, is this one of those stories from childhood that gets more exaggerated every time you tell it? Like in reality her mom would buy them clothing one size bigger so they could grow into it, but over time it became ?three years ahead? and clothing so tattered the school sent a note home? The basic story is probably true, but she grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut. I used to live near there and it?s one of the richest places in the US. ?Tattered? in that community is probably extremely relative.
