Anti-Asian violence has been increasing over the last year after Trump linked COVID to China and Asia. We have been horrified by the attacks on Asian elders. Eight people were murdered by a white supremacist who targeted Asian spas in Georgia. It is absolutely despicable that the press and local police captain have tried to humanize the terrorist. Since this unconscionable event has taken place, there have been several Stop Asian Hate rallies organized. It was one such rally in Pittsburgh, PA that Sandra Oh came out to support. In a video captured by photojournalist Kristina Serafin, Sandra gave an impassioned speech about being proud to be Asian. Sandra stated that Asians belong in America just as much as anyone else. Below is more on the event from Access Online:
Local photojournalist Kristina Serafini captured Sandra?s powerful speech in a video posted to Twitter, and the clip quickly went viral.
?To everyone here?I will challenge everyone here: If you see something, will you help me? If you see one of our sisters and brothers in need, will you help us?? Sandra said, after acknowledging her gratitude for the opportunity to gather with other attendees and share their collective outrage.
?For many of us in our communities,? Sandra continued, ?this is the first time we are even able to voice our fear and our anger, and I really am so grateful to everyone willing to listen? One thing that I know is that many in our community are very scared, and I understand that. And one way to go through and get through our fear is to reach out to our communities.?
The 49-year-old went on to encourage those listening to join forces, and she added how honored she felt to be able to express herself publicly.
?We must understand, as Asian-Americans, we just need to reach out our hand to our sisters and brothers and say, ?Help me and I?m here,? she added. ?And just for one thing, I am proud to be Asian! I belong here! Many of us don?t get that chance to be able to say that, so I just wanted to give us an opportunity to be able to shout that. Thank you so much.?

I stand with my Asian brothers and sisters including those from South and Southeast Asia. This violence is feeling very much like what was happening to people who were from the Middle East or were Muslim adjacent after 9/11. We should all stand with the Asian community to combat this anti-Asian sentiment. White supremacy is a drug that needs to be eradicated. I have always been a fan of Sandra Oh and she will always be Christina Yang for me. Sandra has spoken up when it wasnt popular to do so and is proud of her heritage. I love that she showed up at this rally and emphasized that are we connected to each other. People like Sandra Oh who have large platforms need to continue to speak out. Call and check in with your Asian friends and family and let them know you stand with them. I will no longer allow the divide and conquer attitudes that come from white supremacy to prevail. Because I truly believe that what happens to one of us, happens to all of us.

I care about Sandra Oh and I was sad that she lost out on yet another Emmy Award. She is truly the Amy Adams of the Emmys. Sandra has now been nominated for EIGHT Emmy Awards and she?s lost every time, for Grey?s Anatomy and Killing Eve. It?s rough. She has won Golden Globes and several SAG Awards though, so it?s not like she?s been blanked entirely, across all award shows.
Last night, Sandra lost again and she even had the link-up camera at home, so we saw her loser face (she actually looked happy for Zendaya, but still). Sandra?s Emmy outfit was worth discussing, because honestly, I thought more people would do what she did wear something comfortable and meaningful rather than ?glam.? Sandra wore regular old pants and a specially-made jacket and match mask in a lovely shade of violet. She spoke to British Vogue about the meaning behind the custom look.
Why she decided to have the jacket & mask made: ?These are unusual times. And, in a lot of ways, it?s been an extremely creative one. We?re having to reconsider the whole system of awards shows and fashion and red carpets. Everybody?s used to having relationships and fittings with designers of a certain prominence ? and this shift has forced me to reflect on who I am and how I express myself through clothes.?
On Black Lives Matter: ?After George Floyd?s death and the protests that followed, I felt that as an Asian-American, a Korean-American person, I wanted to express my support for the Black community in a way that felt personal to my community. Then, a playwright friend of mine sent me this local LA brand, KORELIMITED, by the designer Matthew Kim, who had done a line of T-shirts and hoodies to support Black Lives Matter. Even though it?s really different from what you would normally wear on a red carpet, I contacted my stylist Elizabeth Saltzman and asked if it would be possible to collaborate with Kim for the Emmys.?
The customized pieces: A few emails later, and the KORE team had agreed to work with Oh on a custom bomber jacket embroidered with symbols that honour both Black culture and Oh?s own Korean heritage. (Fittingly, KORE stands for Keepin? Our Roots Eternal.) ?It?s in a royal purple colour ? which is a super Korean colour and brings a certain mindset for me ? and it says ?Black Lives Are Precious? in Korean writing, because the literal translation of Black Lives Matter is impossible in Korean. The characters have to be read top to bottom, right to left, [a traditional way of writing Korean script] and there are dashes, or taegukgi, lifted from the Korean flag, which represent celestial bodies and the natural elements and all of that good stuff. And then on the right there?s a mugunghwa [hibiscus], the national flower of Korea.?
She did her own hair & makeup: ?My hair is really long now ? I have Covid hair ? so I?m going to try and copy some of the long braids and really elaborate hairdos from pictures. Somehow I just feel like that hair lends itself to the streetwear.?
[From British Vogue]
I love this! I love that she contacted an independent streetwear company (Korean-American-owned) to make her specialized pieces saying ?Black Lives Are Precious.? Kore Limited liked the collab so much, they?ve made more and they?re selling them, with proceeds benefiting Campaign Zero and Black Girls Code. The jacket is so cool too, and it?s so beautiful. Aren?t you surprised that more people didn?t take the time to get some kind of custom pieces like this made?

The 2019 Golden Globes were not good. In recent years, we?ve been spoiled with hosts like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and did I mention Tina Fey and Amy Poehler? Naming Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg seemed promising, and truly, it was an important hire: Sandra Oh has so much heat right now for Killing Eve, and it?s great to see an Asian woman take on that kind of highly visible role. But good lord, there were maybe TWO funny jokes in their opening monologue out of what was mostly terrible timing and too much earnestness. It was a weird vibe for the *start* of what is usually the most ?fun? show of the year.
In addition to that, Sandra WON for Killing Eve and gave one of the cutest speeches, complete with cutaways to her proud parents:
Sandra became the first person to ever speak Korean or thank someone in Korean on stage at the Golden Globes. She?s also the first actress of Asian descent to win for a lead role in more than 40 years.
It was also nice to see Sandra really blow it out, fashion-wise, for the whole night. She was one of the first people on the red carpet, wearing a gorgeous off-white Versace and walking the carpet with her Killing Eve peeps (her costar, Jodie Comer, wore a strange Ralph & Russo gown). Then she changed into several other gowns throughout the night, all of which were gorgeous. So, a mixed bag, but mostly a good mixed bag. And as Sandra said in her very earnest sidenote in the opening, she only took the hosting gig to increase visibility.

Sandra Oh was in a red deep v neck Ralph and Russo gown last night which I appreciated for the little sleeves. I also like the lattice work beading detail. Sandra has been getting a lot of buzz for her work on BBCs Killing Eve, for which she was the first Asian American woman nominated for Best Actress at the Emmys. That speaks volumes about the lack of Asian representation on television. (None of us are watching Killing Eve yet as its not on any of the streaming services. The first four episodes are available on demand from BBC America so I think Ill watch it soon.) Sandra brought her mom and dad as her dates, which was cute, I always like seeing celebrities with their parents. In a red carpet interview with Variety, Sandras mom said how proud she was of her and gave her a kiss on the cheek. You can see that here. Sandras reaction was the best.
Best supporting actress nominee Alexis Bledel had on Delpozo. This dress reminds me somewhat of Michelle Dockerys Carolina Herrera in that its just a basic pastel dress with some appliques on it. In this case theres a neon panel on the skirt and its bad. Alexis keeps her private life on lockdown but she actually has a nearly four-year-old son with Vincent Kartheiser, weve just never seen photos of the baby and we dont know his name.
