Natalie Dormer is doing a ton of publicity for her new television series, The Scandalous Lady W. The show is an 18th century period drama with plenty o’ corsets. Nat plays a fictionalized version of Lady Seymour Worsley, who enjoyed several lovers outside of her marriage. She ends up ditching her hubby for his BFF, Captain George Bisset. This sounds like a saucy program full of delicious, soap-opera escapism. This is also a show that I’d watch because, ultimately, the female protagonist rails against the historical notion that she belongs to her husband. Let’s face it, the hubby doesn’t sound like a gem of a dude.
Natalie landed in a bit of trouble over a recent interview where she claimed hard work was enough to overcome both sexism and ageism. In that interview, she claimed that the sex and violence on Game of Thrones was not gratuitous but “naturalistically shot.” In a new interview with Michigan Avenue magazine, her attitude changes a bit. She answers, “a touch defensively, when asked about the period roles.” Then they ask her about the Game of Thrones story arc where her character, Margaery, marries the 12-year-old boy king, Tommen Baratheon. They have an implied sex scene and a kiss, but Dormer finds “the fuss a little irritating.” Let’s do this:
On Tommen and Margaery’s marriage consummation: ?After what we?ve done on this show?the rape, the incest, the child murdering — it baffes me that two people in a reasonably good, reasonably affectionate relationship is what gets the wide eyes and the questions.?
Her supposed reliance upon corset dramas: “You say that but I’ve actually only done three corset dramas in 10 years. Kate Winslet’s spent more time in a corset than I have. HELENA BONHAM CARTER has spent more time in a corset than I have. What Americans tend to forget is that I can carry a semiautomatic weapon and run around in jeans and t-shirts, too.”
On losing anonymity: “Recognition can be a many-times-a-day occurrence. I get oil paintings from fans, computer-generated art from fans, fans approaching me in the toilet, fans approaching me in the sauna. It’s a Champagne problem, but I can’t really go anywhere without a, ‘Wait. Aren’t you…?’

Previously, Dormer had no problem with GoT violence. Now she’s saying it’s all awful compared to her sex scene with a 12-year-old king. Granted, the actor (Dean-Charles Chapman) was 17 years old at the time of filming. But in a talk with MTV News, Chapman said, “It was very disturbing. I found out about that scene by reading the script, and I was really shocked. I didn’t think it would have gone down like that on screen.” He also said that watching the scene was really “weird” because his character is such a young boy.
Natalie didn’t write the scene in question (which was different from George R.R. Martin’s take in the A Song of Fire and Ice book series). It’s just interesting that Natalie justified this scene in comparison to all of the other controversial GoT moves.
