Carrie Coon is pretty sure her 'White Lotus' character is an alcoholic
Spoilers for this season of The White Lotus.

I?ve been a big Carrie Coon for years, even though I never watched or cared about The Leftovers. But I think she?s an amazing shapeshifter who can play anything and anyone, and I?ve really enjoyed her role in the third season of The White Lotus. She?s one of a trio of 40-something blonde friends on vacation in Thailand. The ?blonde trio? storyline is the most relatable for much of the audience an extremely realistic look at how women connect and fall apart and snipe at each other and gossip. Well, Carrie chatted with Harper?s Bazaar ahead of next Sunday?s TWL season finale. For what it?s worth, I seriously doubt the blonde trio will be the ones who die in the finale! I think it?s going to be Walton Goggins? character, Rick. Some highlights from Carrie?s interview:

How she, Leslie Bibb & Michelle Monaghan prepared for their roles as besties: ?We jumped on a text thread as soon as we knew who was cast, and we exchanged photographs of ourselves at around the age we thought our characters would have met, maybe eight or nine years old. So that was fun?and its the job: building chemistry together. We were living together and getting to know each other. Leslie and I shared a villa at the Four Seasons, and Michelle and Parker [Posey] were next door. We took our meals together, went to the gym and swimming together; we were basically building a friendship as our friendship on the show was being deconstructed.

The most relatable storyline: ?I would say that our storyline was the most relatable because its the one piece of the puzzle that everybody has some relationship to. The other stuff may feel far from peoples own experiences, but I think everybody has some idea understanding of female friendship, whether it be personally or culturally.

Everyone gossips: ?Wed be lying if we say weve never been in those situations. Youd have to have a lot of integrity to never gossip. I actually dont have a close group of female friends from my childhood. Thats just not the way my life unfolded. So that part was actually quite far from my own experience?questioning how much of a friendship is history and force of habit and how much is actual shared interest. And were all women in our 40s, reflecting and questioning our life choices. I think middle age is tricky in that way. You cant help but compare yourself to other people. We have brains built on comparison. And youre right, its not gendered. Everybodys engaging in that because everyone is comparing themselves to others and performing self on some level.

Lori is an alcoholic: ?I think shes on a journey of discovering just how much of it she has. So many of the problems we have in our relationships come from being reactive. You see a lot of reactive behavior on this girls trip, from everybody. If they had just shown up at the villa on day one and said, Listen, I going to put it all out there?, and been really honest about where they were in their lives and how they were feeling, they would have had such a different vacation. But they didnt. They kept up the the performance. No relationship can survive that lack of honesty. And I think Loris an alcoholic, and I dont think you can continue to be an alcoholic and live a fully examined life. Those two things dont really go together.

Lori?s alcoholism is in the script: ?It was definitely in the text. They talk about her drinking being problematic, and it was also often scripted in our scenes that they were drinking. But I made a choice to make sure she was always drinking and that she always had one glass half gone and another one on the way. Thats how shes vacationing. Her life is falling apart, and shes not being honest about it. And, geez, how many people are moving through the world that way?

Mike White edited out some backstory on Lori?s life: ?There was a bit more context to her home life. You originally found out that her daughter was actually non-binary, maybe trans, and going by they/them. You see Laurie struggling to explain it to her friends, struggling to use they/them pronouns, struggling with the language, which was all interesting. It was only a short scene, but for me, it did make the question [in episode 3] of whether Kate voted for Trump so much more provocative and personally offensive to Laurie, considering who her child is in the world. But the season was written before the election. And considering the way the Trump administration has weaponized the cultural war against transgender people even more since then, when the time came to cut the episode down, Mike felt that the scene was so small and the topic so big that it wasn?t the right way to engage in that conversation.

[From Harper?s Bazaar]

Carrie is such a good actress, I actually forgot that her character is supposed to be an alcoholic. That?s how subtly she?s played it in the last half of the season, which is also pretty realistic. Her friends are not going to challenge her on her drinking problem, so she?s just guzzling wine all day every day. As for the backstory on Loris kid? that?s interesting, because Mike White did leave in that initial conversation where Loris friends are talking around Lori?s life in NYC. I get why they just lifted out that backstory though, and they were right to do so.

Leslie Bibb is not responsible for Sam Rockwell's crazy role on 'The White Lotus'
Spoilers for The White Lotus.

Generally, I avoid writing too much about Severance and The White Lotus because most discussions involve so many spoilers, and I want people to be able to genuinely enjoy the experience of watching these shows in their own time. I?m really enjoying this season of TWL I?m rooting for two characters to make it, Aimee Lou Woods? character Chelsea and Natasha Rothwell?s character Belinda. Almost everyone else can choke! No, I actually like some of them, including Walton Goggins? man of mystery, who is apparently hunting down the guy who killed his father. Goggins? character, Rick, has flown to Bangkok to hunt down this guy, and Rick ended up calling an old friend for some help.

In the most recent episode, we finally got to meet Rick?s friend, who was played by Oscar-winner Sam Rockwell. Rockwell?s guest role it?s more than a cameo, he?s in next week?s episode too has quickly become one of the most bonkers moments in TWL?s history. Rockwell delivered a truly insane monologue which I will not even describe, you just have to watch it. So many people thought Rockwell?s partner Leslie Bibb somehow got Rockwell the role, or that Rockwell might have been hanging out on set with Bibb, because she?s one of the major characters this season. As it turns out, not so much. Bibb spoke to Entertainment Weekly about how Sam dropped into Thailand for eight days and did his thing.

Leslie Bibb tells Entertainment Weekly that she actually had nothing to do with Sam Rockwells casting.

No, they came to me and they were like, Were going to offer this to Sam,' Bibb tells EW. I was on the treadmill and [producer] Dave Bernad came to me. But I was like, Sam is wild as a buck. Listen, I dont know what hes going to do. Hes doing a movie in South Africa, he likes time to prep. And he was very nervous about that prep time.

That was a big arc to do that quickly, Bibb says of [Rockwell?s] characters debut. And [Rockwell] literally went from one [project] to the next, so I said [to producers], You cant get mad at me if he says no. What if he says no? I was so scared! Then [creator] Mike [White] was like, No, no, no, we wont get mad at you.'

Bibb laughed as she remembered telling the showrunner, I was like, That jet planes going to fly, I cant ground him. But then it was really sweet ? I think Walton really, because theyre very good friends, wanted to have that experience with him.

And getting her real-life partner to come join her on the set of The White Lotus was a treat, even if Rockwell got a truncated experience. It was really fun, she says. We dont have any scenes together, and he did all of his stuff in eight days. We were there for six months, Sam was there for eight days ? Sam did not [have] the same experience in eight days. He got The White Lotus light. But its nice to be able to have a context to share, and I think hes a great actor, and were lucky to have him, and I think he chewed up that character. Mike was really happy to have him too.

Bibb did get a bit jealous when she first saw some of Rockwells scenes, however. I saw some stills from them on the boat in Bangkok, and I was like, Were sweating our faces off, and they were like, hair blowing in the wind,' she added with a laugh. Look how cool they look. This is like To Live and Die in L.A., but it was like To Live and Die in Bangkok. It was so cool.

[From EW]

What?s even wilder about this is that Sam still hasn?t said anything? He just dropped into TWL, delivered the craziest monologue in the history of the show, dipped after a few days and he?s done absolutely nothing to promote it or talk about it. An actor?s life is so wild though, I bet Sam enjoyed the hell out of the guest role and being able to work with his friend Walton Goggins. What I also liked was that Rockwell?s appearance felt completely organic within the show. It wasn?t like ?oh, look, a movie star just showed up!? You actually felt like those two guys had some history and once you see the scene, you realize that Sam didn?t do this for the glamour.
