| Angelina Jolie coauthors Guardian op-ed with NATO sec-general Jens Stoltenberg | Added 6 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

For a decade, Angelina Jolie was the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commission on Refugees. In 2012, her title was upgraded to Special Envoy for the UNHCR, likely as a way to reflect and reward her work with the agency on behalf of refugees around the world. Angelina has always known that her work doesn?t begin and end with the UNHCR, and over the past decade especially, she?s branched out by founding her own charities, foundations and organizations to do on-the-ground work in certain countries and to highlight certain causes which needed more attention and energy. One of those causes was preventing sexual violence in conflict. Jolie created a initiative, launched a summit in London on the subject, and she?s been doing a ton of work outside of the UNHCR on the initiative, and now she?s got someone pretty powerful on her side: the NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg. Stoltenberg and Jolie coauthored a Guardian op-ed on the subject of preventing sexual violence in conflict – go here to read the full piece.
All violence against women betrays the fundamental promise in the UN Charter of equal rights and dignity for women. It is one of the prime reasons why women remain in a subordinate position in relation to men in most parts of the world. When this violence is committed as an act of war it tears apart families, creates mass displacement, and makes peace and reconciliation far harder to achieve. In fact, it is often designed expressly to achieve those goals as part of a military strategy.
Despite being prohibited by international law, sexual violence continues to be employed as a tactic of war in numerous conflicts from Myanmar to Ukraine and Syria to Somalia. It includes mass rape, gang rape, sexual slavery, and rape as a form of torture, ethnic cleansing and terrorism. It accounts in large part for why it is often more dangerous to be a woman in a warzone today than it is to be a soldier.
In our different roles we have seen how conflicts in which women?s bodies and rights are systematically abused last longer, cause deeper wounds and are much harder to resolve and overcome. Ending gender-based violence is therefore a vital issue of peace and security as well as of social justice. The Nato Alliance was founded to safeguard not just the security but also the freedom of its peoples: in the words of President Harry Truman, as ?a shield against aggression and the fear of aggression?.
For nearly 70 years Nato has stood for collective defence against military threats. But also for the defence of democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law and the UN Charter. We believe that Nato has the responsibility and opportunity to be a leading protector of women?s rights. In particular, we believe Nato can become the global military leader in how to prevent and respond to sexual violence in conflict, drawing on the strengths and capabilities of its member states and working with its many partner countries.
Over the coming months we will be working together and with others to identify ways in which Nato can strengthen its contribution to women?s protection and participation in all aspects of conflict-prevention and resolution.
[From The Guardian]
The piece then goes on to list the ways NATO can and will target the issue of sexual violence in conflict. NATO plans to ?integrate gender issues into its strategic thinking as part of its values and reinforcing a culture of the integration of women throughout the organization including in leadership positions.? Meaning, they plan to hire more women. They plan to raise the standards of how Allied countries? militaries are trained, and how they help train militaries around the world. They have developed new standard operating procedures for soldiers in the field, which will be taught in pre-deployment training. NATO will be adding more ?gender advisers? in the field, in conflict zones, to ensure that women can come forward and speak about what is happening to them. NATO also plans to collect data on all of this, which might sound like a weird thing to include, but data makes the world go ?round. Can I just say? Angelina is so big-league.

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton have a Christmas special coming up on December 12 on NBC called Gwen Stefani?s You Make It Feel Like Christmas. She also has that Christmas album out, You Make It Feel Like Christmas, with the title song a duet with Blake. I finally listened to it, and it’s so bad you guys! It made me grimace so much. I’m listening to it now and I can barely finish my breakfast cereal. (Honey Nut Cheerios, but I eat the generic brand because I’m fancy like that.) A lot of people must agree with me as the song has less than a million views on YouTube and it’s been out since the end of September. It’s just awful.
Anyway I buy that Gwen and Blake are the real deal, she worships that basic guy and she convinced him to accept People’s Sexiest title, although she realizes that sexy is subjective. Gwen told Ellen on her show last week that Blake is sexy because of his “big old heart and that sense of humor. He doesn’t even like take himself seriously, and he’s just such an incredible person.” I think Gwen appreciates Blake because she was stuck in a difficult marriage for years, and for what it’s worth the feeling seems to be mutual.
Gwen also did an interview at a Spotify Listening Party for her album (I wonder how many people had to stifle grimaces) where she talked about her family’s Christmas traditions. Her grandmother had one that she can’t quite live up to:
“I don?t like to brag, but I did have an incredible family and parents and grandparents,? Stefani shared during a Q&A at the Spotify Listening Party for her album, You Make It Feel Like Christmas, hosted by Fred Segal and Domino Magazine on Thursday. ?I can remember my grandma, my mom?s mom, she was a redhead, Irish. I would call her crazy lady, she would probably like that, I think.?
?She used to do gingerbread villages. Like she would start and there would be the church and each one of us got our own gingerbread house and at Christmas, we would take it home and eat it. It was over the top,? she recalled, adding that she tried to recreate the tradition two years ago — but it was “a complete disaster.”
?[It had a] horrifying taste. I don?t even know how I did it. I think I used the wrong molasses. It was different molasses in it, so I?m trying to figure it out,” Stefani said. “This year is the year though! I have to do it.?
[From ET Online]
I’m not a baker, I’m just a middling cook and haven’t done much baking, and I can screw up a gingerbread kit. That said, now I want to make a kit with my kid. One of my favorite memories as a child was my grandfather making a huge gingerbread house with my brother and me. I’m pretty sure he made it from scratch. That’s amazing that Gwen’s grandmother made entire gingerbread villages like that! So much work and detailing must have gone into that, and it also takes incredible skill as Gwen learned the hard way. What a special memory. I just try to decorate my house and make Christmastime special and I hope that’s enough. We’re not religious at all in my family but we love Christmas and being together at the holidays. There’s no “war on Christmas” in America, but when Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton are headlining Christmas specials, that’s a sign that it’s headed toward mediocrity.
Got my Christmas present already gx #youmakeitfeellikechristmas @blakeshelton #yum

It seems that, for the second year in a row, people who asked Santa for Kylie cosmetics might find their stockings a bit lighter than anticipated. Last year, the makeup maven’s website and pop-up shop sold out of everything quicker than a Rudolph-led sleigh and, this year, Kylie’s taking her stuff to the streets in a customized truck.
The 20-year-old mom-to-be, who recently received WWD’s Beauty Newsmaker Award, introduced Los Angeles beauty addicts to the Kylie Truck, which made its debut at LA shopping landmark The Grove on Friday afternoon. Over 100 fans were treated to cupcakes and lip kit swatches as they waited for their opportunity to get their hands on this year’s Kylie Cosmetics holiday collection, as well as her signature lip kits, lipsticks, lip liners, kylighters (ugh, really with that name?), and eyeshadow palettes. Those not into makeup could shop accessories, including panties, socks, and hats. Kylie, who was not making an appearance with the truck, shared a photo of the truck on Instagram the day before its launch, adding the caption, “welcome the @kylietruck to the @kyliecosmetics family! First stop .. @TheGroveLA TOMORROW.”
