Bryce Dallas Howard: I?ve retired talking about my body

Bryce Dallas Howard: I?ve retired talking about my body
Bryce Dallas Howard has looked stunning while out on the promo tour for Argylle, the latest Matthew Vaughn spy movie she stars in with Claudia Schiffer?s cat. My favorite ensembles have been the Rowen Rose argyle sweater-skirt set and Altuzarra marigold dress matching skirt and top. She?s a bombshell in these looks, no? Which makes it all the more infuriating that Hollywood has cast her as ?the big girl,? with ?big? meaning not sample size. Bryce has always been candid about how she has to source her red carpet looks herself, but she?s reached the point where she?s sick of perennially discussing her size. I don?t blame her. So Bryce has declared that she?s ?retired? talking about her body:

?I?ve retired talking about my body,? the Argylle star tells PEOPLE in this week?s issue. ?My focus is on what my body is doing, what my body is capable of.?

The reflective star, who broke out 20 years ago with M. Night Shyamalan?s The Village and in 2022 wrapped a decade of Jurassic World films opposite Chris Pratt, recalls years spent gently pushing back when asked to lose weight for roles. Now, she?s begun to invite direct conversations before signing on.

?What I found was best is to just be in communication with folks early in the hiring process,? she says. ?What I would say is that, ?If you want to cast me, awesome. But if you think you want to cast me, but 20 pounds less me or 40 pounds less me, that?s actually another actor. That?s not me, and I?m not going to shame you in this moment about this. We need to have a real conversation here because if you?re hiring me, you?re hiring me.??

That included her latest film, Argylle (now in theaters). Ahead of filming director Matthew Vaughn?s new spy thriller, ?I had that conversation with Matthew. And Matthew, was like, ?Yeah, I?m hiring you.?? Playing an introverted spy novelist who finds herself fighting for her life when thrust into real espionage, ?I was even stronger because of it,? she adds. ?I was able to do more because of it.?

Howard has always found it uncomfortable to be the face of these conversations. ?Who I am is someone who fluctuates,? she says. ?I took some time and it took some work and it took some counsel to really realize that dieting is the enemy, for me at least.?

Today, the mom of two focuses on strength ? ?training my body to accomplish X, Y or Z for whatever given circumstances I need to bring to life for a movie.?

She?s also steadily expanding her work behind the camera, directing episodes of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and the upcoming Star Wars: Skeleton Crew after years spent studying the process on film sets.

?I love directing, and it?s as important to me as acting,? she says. ?It?s been really wonderful to lean more into gaining experience, and I love to work.?

[From People]

Bryce is awfully classy and generous to the small-minded producers and filmmakers she references, way more than they deserve. Remember when she said (speaking of the Jurassic World producers) that she was ?asked to not use my natural body in cinema,? carefully phrasing her words in a delicate way I?m sure the producers didn?t show to her? I can understand how she?d want to avoid that experience again, by having these frank conversations at the very beginning. But it?s still so demeaning. ?Are you really sure you want to hire me? Remember, I?m Hollywood fat!? And for the record, I would kill for her figure. Le sigh. I?m so glad to hear she?s directing and really enjoying that side of the camera. I hope she continues to do both, and be the 21st century, redheaded Ida Lupino.

Chloe Sevigny on New York: 'Everybody's in Lululemon and has a f?king dog'
True story, I?ve always found Chloe Sevigny sort of annoying and full of herself, but the general ?90s nostalgia has made me reassess her. Like? maybe she genuinely is very cool and sort of misunderstood? She should get credit for her commitment to independent film and working with up-and-coming filmmakers. She should get credit for truly loving fashion and celebrating fashion. She should get credit for being an underrated and even underappreciated actress. Anyway, I?m here for the Sevigny Revival. She currently stars in Feud: Capote vs. the Swans, where she plays CZ Guest, the famous style icon/designer and writer. To promote the show, Chloe recently chatted with Rolling Stone about style, reality television, late-motherhood and more. Some highlights:

She doesn?t watch the Real Housewife shows: ?I have never watched a single episode of a single Housewife. I don?t know who any of them are or any of their things going on. Didn?t one of them do something for a college application? [she was thinking of Lori Loughlin of Full House] Oh, she wasn?t a Housewife? Shows how much I know. OK. I?m not really much of a TV person, period. I used to be really into Project Runway, but this was pre-baby, pre-husband, single life. I?ve never watched a Kardashian episode. It?s been a while.?

Whether she has gossip-heavy lunches with girlfriends: ?I used to have these girls? nights where I?d only have girlfriends over and we?d drink martinis and talk sh-t, but that hasn?t happened as much now that the small person is always around my house and never leaves. [Laughs] One of my New Year?s resolutions was to start carving out more time for friends.

Her infamous New Yorker profile by Jay McInerney turns 30 years old next year: ?It was so odd to be written about before you were even famous for anything, you know? That was the hard part about it for me: I didn?t really understand why it was happening. In retrospect, I think it?s interesting to follow a girl who?s coming into her own, but at the time I didn?t feel it was justified. I was like, ?Why do you even care?? I was like, ?Why am I even doing this?? [Jay] promised to buy me this dress and my father read The New Yorker.?

Having a baby at 45, during the pandemic: ?It?s amazing just to have a baby. I didn?t think it was going to happen to me, and then to have this thing? I can?t imagine life without him. And like I said, he just never leaves. He?s always around here. I had a doctor that specializes in these ?high-risk? pregnancies, and there was a pressure to induce for the sake of the hospital staff because if you induced you could get a Covid test, and then the nurses and the hospital staff would feel more comfortable if you were negative, which is so crazy that that was something that was being encouraged. It?s such a complicated thing to talk about in the press because it?s such a personal thing. I hope people will be happy that it happened for me, but I also don?t want them to think it?s the be-all and end-all. I even have friends that were like, ?I have a great career. If I didn?t have a kid, then it would have been fine.? I was like, ?What?!? Like, wow. But I had tried other avenues and not had luck with them, so to naturally conceive at that age is kind of a miracle.

The best advice she?s ever received: ?I don?t really have an answer for that. I think there are things you learn as you go along, like comparing and despairing and how unhealthy that is, and running your own race, and they?re all truisms but feel trite to say out loud, so I?m always kind of ugh.

Style advice: ?Style is so personal. There are people that say, ?Less is more,? but I don?t know if that?s necessarily true. I think whatever is true for you and makes you feel best.

Her friendship with Natasha Lyonne: ?We carve out the time to see one another. She came away with me for my 49th birthday recently. We have a similar attitude toward certain things about life and the business. We met when we were both roommates with Mike Rapaport. She was his roommate in L.A. and I was his roommate in New York, where we were both living with him for free even more than being roommates. He introduced us and we were very like-minded.

Whether she was boxed into doing indie work or whether she made that choice: ?I think it?s a little bit of both. Early on, it was by choice. And later, I?d kind of dug my own niche that I was then boxed into. I do like to think that I?ve maintained that across TV as well. I like working with, dare I say, auteurs ? Ryan Murphy, Portlandia, Louis C.K., Russian Doll, and even Big Love, to an extent. Doing these TV projects with strong showrunners and writer-directors. But as far as studio pictures, I don?t know where those are. Most of my work has been incoming calls, and a lot of that has to do with living in New York and not L.A. My father died when I was 20 and I never wanted to be far from my mother.

The change in street style: ?Now, everything is intermeshed. When I was younger, you could tell who was a punker, who was a hardcore kid, who was into hip hop. And now, everybody looks like they?re just into fashion. It?s hard to dress in a way that identifies you in a certain rebellious milieu. I imagine it?s harder for kids to feel like more of an individual, I would assume? I don?t know.?

Whether New York has become a city for the rich. ?Yeah. The athleisure and the dogs are taking over, and that?s really unfortunate. Everybody?s in Lululemon and has a fking dog and it?s driving me crazy. I?m sorry, dog lovers. There are too many of you. I?m not going out to clubs in Ridgewood so I?m sure it?s there somewhere, but I?m not experiencing it. I hope there are places for people to go when they want to. I miss the megaclubs and the accessibility. I would like to know that they were there [in Manhattan] and not in Ridgewood, which seems very far. At the same time, the city seems closer as far as going out to other boroughs with Uber. We would do car services and it was harder to access areas because of subways and buses not going to certain areas.

[From Rolling Stone]

It?s kind of crazy to think that ?New York is a city for the rich? complaint has been happening basically since Rudy Giuliani was mayor, so for 25 years, there?s been this constant argument of ?everything is so expensive/unliveable/not cool/not artsy.? But yeah, I believe that ?everybody?s in Lululemon and has a fking dog? is the current thing. Her story about Michael Rapaport is completely wild too Rapaport has a place in New York and a place in LA and he let two young actresses crash with him in each place? Then he introduced them, knowing that they would get along? As for her indie work? I think she probably was boxed in, but it?s weird that no big-name director was ever like ?hey, I bet Chloe would be great in this big-budget movie.? I wonder if she was really never offered anything like that.

Emma Stone: Anxiety is like rocket fuel, you can't help but get out of bed
I was on the phone with my mother this week and she said in a somewhat serious tone, ?I have something to tell you.? Off to a good ominous start. After a brief but pregnant pause she continued, ?I saw an ad for Poor Things. I don?t think it?s for me.? And that was it! That whole brace-yourself-for-a-catastrophe intro was just to say she?s going to continue her streak of not seeing a single Yorgos Lanthimos film. Ok Mama, thanks for the update! And I get it, the movie has a very exaggerated, bonkers point of view that?s not for everyone. But that?s a big part of why I like Emma Stone ? she?s bucked the ingnue mold by choosing quirky, comedic, sometimes freaky parts that suit her taste. Leading ladies can be weirdos too! So Emma has been Oscar campaigning for Poor Things where she?s up for Best Actress and Best Picture as a producer. Amid her spate of recent NYC appearances she spoke with NPR about her lifelong anxiety and how it led her to acting:

In a new interview with National Public Radio (NPR) published Wednesday, the Poor Things actress, 35, opened up about her childhood anxiety, sharing that while she initially had a tough time dealing with it, she found a way to push through.

?I started in therapy, I think around age 8, because it was getting really hard for me to leave the house to go to school,? Stone told NPR. ?I sort of lived in fear of these panic attacks.?

The actress, who said that she had her first panic attack when she was 7 years old, added she believed the source of her anxiety when she was younger stemmed from the fear of being separated from her mother. She noted, ?it?s a hard age to be able to reason with yourself, at 7 or 8, and tell yourself these things aren?t true. ? It was very hard to convince myself otherwise.?

All that changed, however, when Stone started acting at the age of 11. The actress said the craft provided a way for her to focus on the moment without worrying about what happened before or what would happen later. She told the outlet that as an actor, ?all of my big feelings are productive, and presence is required.?

Those experiences have altered the way she thinks of anxiety now, Stone said. She shared to NPR that she thinks it can be a positive thing if people know what to do with it.

?I?ve told a lot of younger people that struggle with anxiety, that in many ways I see it as kind of a superpower,? Stone said. ?Just because we might have a funny thing going on in our amygdala, and our fight-or-flight response is maybe a little bit out of whack in comparison to many people?s brain chemistry, it doesn?t make it wrong. It doesn?t make it bad.?

?It just means we have these tools to manage,? she continued. ?And if you can use it for productive things, if you can use all of those feelings in those synapses that are firing for something creative, or something that you?re passionate about, or something interesting.?

Said Stone: ?Anxiety is like rocket fuel because you can?t help but get out of bed and do things, do things, do things because you?ve got all of this energy with you. And that?s really a gift.?

[From People]

I vaguely remembered Emma talking about anxiety in the past, but it never really hit me how serious it was until this interview. And I have no qualms in admitting that I was teary when she said it came from a fear of being separated from her mother. While I never had anxiety about going to school (that was actually where I thrived), I was a mess at bedtime. I don?t recall being afraid of the dark or a monster, but I was panicked about being alone in my room at night. So for most of my childhood I wasn?t, instead I slept in my mother?s room with her. During my waking hours I felt tremendous shame over it, but climbing into bed with my mother right there truly felt like the only way I could relax and let go of the day. You could say that my anxiety got me out of bed, like Emma says? it just propelled me into my mother?s bed. There was no weaning off plan, it was an overnight switch where all of a sudden I just knew ?I don?t need this anymore.? I?m very lucky I have a mother who listened to me and never made me feel bad about my fears ? I did that to myself! And just look at the fully-functioning adult I am today! (Stop laughing.) I wonder how Emma feels about her daughter, who?s three, approaching the age when her own panic attacks began. More cause for anxiety, to be sure.

Before ending this piece I have to note that Yorgos and Emma?s previous collaboration, The Favourite, has what I consider to be one of the best lines ever in cinema history. As uttered by Nicholas Hoult: ?Must the duck be here??

Kate Hudson releases her first single, 'Talk About Love?: good or boring'
If you told me Kate Hudson did an album ten years ago and it faded into obscurity I would believe you. Shes just someone who has her finger in a lot of pies, like Fabletics, a vodka brand and a supplement line. Shes said Im an Aries. I get bored. I gotta keep moving, which might explain her latest foray into music. Kate has released a single co-written with venerable multi-Oscar nominated Linda Perry and Kates fiance, musician Danny Fujikawa. Its called Talk about Love and its very mid, for lack of a better word. First heres People Magazines writeup about it. In her press release for the song, Kate said I wanted it to be something delicious and sexy and all the things that I believe in.

Kate Hudson?s debut single has landed!

The actress-turned-singer?s first song ?Talk About Love? has finally dropped after weeks of anticipation from fans, providing a burst of blended rock/pop sounds for listeners to enjoy.

In the song ? co-written with Linda Perry and Hudsons fianc Danny Fujikawa ? the actress, 44, celebrates having a love connection at the deepest level possible while belting out vocals over columns of synth, guitars and a jumping rhythm track guaranteed to raise the mood.

?You only have one first single,? Hudson said of her musical debut in a press release. ?And I wanted it to be something delicious and sexy and all the things that I believe in.?

?I wanted it to be open and seeking, searching to find something powerful. But I also wanted the music to be the rock, the pop, the dance music and even a bit of the alternative records I love,? she continued. ?It was a lot to put into one song, but thankfully, I had some wonderful people working with me. And so, here we are!?

Hudson worked independently with producer Johan Carlsson and Fujikawa to form a fresh sound for the song that also felt natural to her. The collaboration developed into the makings of an album which the actress has teased will be released later this year.

[From People]

This single, which is below, isnt bad. I like the retro vibe, but its like a theme song on a CW show. Its budget Lady Gaga without the soul or variety. The refrain is OK and it grew on me I just dont find it memorable or catchy. Good for Kate for doing music if she wants though. There are so many other musicians who are doing complex, nuanced and haunting music who dont get much attention at all. Im thinking specifically of Chadwick Bosemans widow, Simone Ledward Boseman, who sings as sahn. Her music is phenomenal and some of her videos on YouTube have less than 2,000 views. Shes in a different genre and she does slower jams but they just have so much heart. Id love it if she got wider recognition. As for Kate, sometimes celebrities dabble in things they want to do rather than things theyre passionate about and it shows.

Heres that single from Kate.

Margot Robbie on her Oscar snub: the biggest award is that 'Barbie' shifted the culture

Margot Robbie on her Oscar snub: the biggest award is that 'Barbie' shifted the culture
It?s been more than a week since the Oscar nominations were announced and we learned that Oscar voters didn?t think Greta Gerwig deserved an Oscar nomination for directing Barbie, nor did the voters think Margot Robbie?s performance as Barbie was worthy of a Best Actress nom. Those same voters absolutely thought America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling were worthy of Oscar noms though, and Barbie is nominated for Best Picture, which means Margot is nominated as a producer. Greta is nominated in adapted screenplay because her original screenplay was ?adapted? from? dolls. Again, the whole thing is still shocking, ridiculous, sexist and asinine. AMPAS continues to look so foolish. Margot didn?t issue any statements about the snubs last week, but she took part in a SAG-AFTRA screening on Tuesday, and she ended up addressing the situation:

?There?s no way to feel sad when you know you?re this blessed,? Margot Robbie said during a panel at a special SAG screening on Tuesday night.

?Obviously I think Greta should be nominated as a director, because what she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing, what she pulled off, it really is,? Robbie said. ?But it?s been an incredible year for all the films.?

Barbie is the only billion-dollar film solely directed by a woman, and it outstripped all other films at the box office last year, bringing home $1.4 billion worldwide. As Robbie said, the reaction to the film has become a kind of cultural phenomenon: ?I just suspect it?s bigger than us. It?s bigger than this movie, it?s bigger than our industry.?

Robbie also clearly pointed out that she is ?beyond ecstatic that we?ve got eight Academy Award nominations, it?s so wild.? Those nominations include Best Picture, Supporting Actress for America Ferrera; Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling, Costume Design, Production Design and Best Adapted Screenplay for Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. ?Everyone getting the nods that they?ve had is just incredible, and the Best Picture nod,? Robbie said.

?We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact. And it?s already done that, and some, way more than we ever dreamed it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this.?

Robbie had the SAG screening audience laughing as she described listening in movie theater bathrooms for audience reactions and then being in a pub in Scotland overhearing a group of men on a bachelor party trip discussing the film. ?It was just truly fascinating,? she said. ?There were people at the table who refused to see the Barbie movie. One guy was like, ?Dude, it is a cultural moment, don?t you want to be a part of culture?? And the other guy was like, ?I?ll never see it,? and by the end he did want to see it. It was a whole thing.? Robbie recalled she couldn?t resist approaching the group to say hello. ?It took a full minute for them to realize, and I was practically out the door. And then they were like, ?Ohhhh!? It was very funny.?

?People?s reactions to the movie have been the biggest reward of this entire experience, whether it?s having a moment like that, or whether it?s listening in the bathrooms, or whether it?s seeing what people are writing online, or even just seeing how much Pink I can see in this room right now. I?ve never been a part of something like this. Not like this. I?ve done comic book stuff and that gets a big reaction, but this felt very different. It still feels very different. And I can?t think of a time when a movie?s had this effect on culture. And it?s amazing to be in the eye of the storm.?

[From Deadline]

A completely mature and measured response from a woman who executive produced and starred in a film about how women are diminished, marginalized and dismissed. What else can she say, really? ?Those fking misogynistic douchebags!? Of course not. She?s still got to play the game to some degree. I hate that she has to eat those snubs and she?s still expected to show up with a smile on her face, to be grateful for those eight nominations. If only there was a well-written speech about just that in Barbie!! But I also agree with her that Barbie?s cultural impact is huge, and the film?s impact on the industry is huge. Which makes it all the more egregious that she and Greta were snubbed.

Kim Kardashian is executive producing a BBC docuseries on Elizabeth Taylor
I totally forgot that Kim Kardashian used to be and still is obsessed with Elizabeth Taylor. I mean, same Elizabeth Taylor was an amazing woman who lived a huge life full of drama, marriages, affairs, Oscars, diamonds, perfume, activism and more. Kim wishes! Kim actually got to meet Elizabeth Taylor in 2011 when she was sent to Taylor?s home to interview her. That was actually Elizabeth Taylor?s final interview. In any case, Kim is now executive producing a BBC docuseries on the life and times of Liz Taylor. Kim will appear in it too.

BBC Arts has commissioned Academy Award-winning production firm Passion Pictures (Searching for Sugar Man, Wham!) to make a three-part documentary series on Elizabeth Taylor, executive produced by and featuring Kim Kardashian. The BBC unveiled the project with the working title Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel Superstar on Monday, noting that Taylor is ?one of Hollywood?s most famous names.?

Executive produced by Kari Lia, Hamish Fergusson and Kardashian, the series promises to feature ?privileged access to those who knew her best, including members of Elizabeth Taylor?s family, friends, and colleagues from throughout her stellar career.? And it vows to shine the spotlight on ?a superstar who transformed not just Hollywood but fame itself, as she went from child star to highest-paid actress in the world.?

A show description also highlights: ?For too long the story of Elizabeth Taylor has been told as a soap opera. The eight marriages, the diamonds, the addictions. This series gives Elizabeth Taylor the significance she richly deserves, in all her incarnations: as an actor, rebel, business mogul, and activist ? to reveal how Taylor created the blueprint for modern celebrity.?

The series will take a deep dive into the legendary star?s craft and technique as an actor and ?how she reinvented the nature of fame, even as she smashed the glass ceiling in Hollywood, before going on to become a billion-dollar businesswoman, activist and advocate.?

The series promises to ?draw on never-before-heard audio tapes, interviews, and unseen TV footage, alongside rich archive of her movies.? It will also feature interviews with a range of stars who knew Taylor personally, including Kardashian, ?who conducted the last interview with her before she died, Dame Joan Collins, a friend and Hollywood contemporary who competed with Elizabeth for the role of Cleopatra, Margaret O?Brien, who went to school with her on the MGM backlot, close friend Carole Bayer Sager, leading scientist Dr. Anthony Fauci who worked alongside Elizabeth in the fight against AIDS, and others.?

Said Kardashian: ?Elizabeth Taylor was unapologetically herself, a fighter. She is proof that you can keep evolving and changing and have different chapters in your life ? and she paved the way for all of us who came after her with that blueprint.?

[From THR]

I wonder if they?ll interview Colin Farrell, who was a dear friend to Elizabeth in her final years she absolutely adored him and said that she saw a lot of Richard Burton in him. As for the docuseries? I know I should yell about this and I guess we should be disgusted at Kim or something? but I don?t hate it? The summary is correct Elizabeth Taylor did it first, she broke through so many glass ceilings, she was a huge AIDS activist, she used her fame to create wildly popular side-gigs like her perfume lines, and she did love to get married. I actually hope Kim helps introduce Generation TikTok to Elizabeth Taylor because they will be gagged.

Emma Stone's NYC promotional street style: very cute or kind of blah'
Emma Stone lives in New York, but she was seemingly in town this week just for a quick promotional blitz, and then she jetted off? somewhere? Maybe to London, because the Cruella sequel is in pre-production. (Incidentally, I loved the first Cruella film and I?m so glad a sequel is coming.) Emma appeared on Good Morning America, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and probably several other shows. I?ve never been crazy about Emma?s style, but I really love her sad-beige outfit in these photos. It?s very ?70s, very Ralph Lauren. The tuxedo dress is meh, and her airport outfit looks like my winter uniform, minus the red loafers.

Emma?s still talking about Poor Things, for which she?s nominated as an actress and producer. This is also Oscar-campaigning for her, by the way. Poor Things made a surge at just the right moment. I don?t know if her late surge will translate into any Oscar statues though. While Emma is beloved by Oscar voters, I think the Best Actress Oscar is Lily Gladstone?s to lose. Now, could I see a situation where Emma gets a surprise win because Lily and Sandra Huller split the vote? Perhaps. But Emma is not ?campaigning? like a frontrunner, she?s just hustling to promote the movie in general, which is probably the smartest way to campaign.

Meanwhile, Emma did a cute Jeopardy thing on The Late Show. She talked before about how much she wants to appear on regular Jeopardy.

Rachael Ray wakes up at 3-4 am and is so loud she wakes her husband up too
I?m trying not to take this onslaught of celebrities sharing how much they get done between 3-7am personally, but the struggle is real. I understand that people tend to fall into one of two camps, early bird or night owl, and I?m also aware that some studies say there are people who simply need less sleep. I grew up with one of those people, an early bird who functioned on fairly little sleep. My father, like Dolly Parton (first time I?ve uttered that statement), would wake up in the wee hours and pretty much get a whole day?s work in by the time my mother and I, night owls, would be rising for the day. It was hard not to feel like a schlub by comparison. Rachael Ray is among that anointed, productive crowd, as she described to People Mag while chatting up a new partnership with A&E:

Rachael Ray has been cooking up something big.

Ray?s production company, Free Food Studios, formed a partnership with A&E Networks. The deal will bring ?in the kitchen? content and various new shows from both Ray and other talent over the next two years.

The project means Ray, 55, is having a hard time finding a moment to relax ? but she?s just fine with that.

?I?m not really good with downtime. I love to work. I love it. I love to have my brain very active, and if I?m not writing shows, I?m drawing ?foodles? I call them ? recipes on paper ? and writing books and things,? the iconic television cook tells PEOPLE. ?I don?t like being idle. I?ve never been good at it.?

She even jokes that she wrote ?120 pages? of one of her cookbooks on her honeymoon. ?I really am bad at doing nothing!? she says proudly.

Ray says she starts as early as 3 a.m.

?I can?t sleep. I wake up at three or four in the morning, and I just start working because I can?t stop thinking about it,? she says. ?I?m not very good at sleep. I never have been. Even when I was a little girl. My nickname was Little Hoot because I was a night owl.?

Her husband of over 20 years, John Cusimano, prefers a little more R and R. ?He loves to sleep. Unfortunately, once I get up and turn all the lights on and start typing and turn the coffee on, he?s forced to get up pretty early, too,? Ray quips. ?He?s usually up between five and six?The other morning he said, ?You realize it?s three o?clock in the morning, right???

Another main reason Ray likes to stay hyperactive is that she?s always curious about trying out new things and taking on reimagined business ventures.

?I?m always game for anything, and I?m a person who?s over 50 years old. I?m trying to still remain relevant, which is an honor,? she says. ?It?s cool to be over 50 and get new opportunities that keep getting thrown at me.?

[From People]

Real question here: do Rachael and her husband live in a studio apartment now? Why is she turning on the lights in the bedroom if he?s still sleeping? At the very least she could flip them on for getting dressed and then turn them back off when she?s done. And is the coffee being made in the bedroom?! Why must he be forced to wake up at the same time?! My vehemence stems from empathy!! Rachael may start her day before daybreak, but she should leave the hubby to his own circadian rhythm. Also, is it me or was that quip about her honeymoon a little rough? Not working doesn?t necessarily mean doing nothing. Rachael and John have been married for nearly 20 years, though, so if they butt heads I?m sure they?ll have one of their signature vents and move on. As for her new A&E shows, she?s working on one where she?ll be cooking from her home in Italy. I?m gonna need several boxes of pasta handy when that airs.

Isla Fisher's tips for making friends: make people laugh, be funny

Isla Fisher's tips for making friends: make people laugh, be funny
I like Isla Fisher. I think she?s adorable, hilarious, and gorgeous. Isla has three children with husband Sascha Baron Cohen and has been acting since 1993. She?s currently co-starring with Josh Gad in Wolf Like Me on Peacock. While promoting Season 2, Isla talks a bit with People about her upbringing. Isla?s dad worked for the United Nations and was stationed all over the world, from Oman where she was born, to Scotland, Australia, and the U.K. Going to a new school every year was tough for Isla, but she figured out how to make new friends. Her secret? Make ?em laugh, make ?em laugh?

As a child, Isla Fisher says she wound up moving constantly, thanks to her fathers job as a banker for the United Nations. Fisher credits the upheaval with becoming a performer. Because I had to learn to make new friends quickly, the thing that I leaned on was humor and storytelling, so it was a natural fit to want to tell stories as an actor, she explains.

Her best tip for fitting into a new environment? I definitely feel like letting your inner idiot out are the best tips for making new friends, she says. You make people laugh and theyre nice to you. Its pretty pretty basic.

[From People]

Hey, you know, drawing people in with humor is a tried-and-true method of attracting people in general. Everyone likes to laugh and if you?re a natural-born performer, then I can totally see how you?d use that talent especially as a kid to ingratiate yourself into otherwise uncomfortable social situations. I?ve never been a particularly funny person, but have always tried to make up for it by attempting to at least be witty (I can pun sometimes!). I also learned early on that validating those who do use (appropriate, non-derogatory) humor to fit in socially was a key integration tool, as well. But most importantly, the older I get, the more I?ve realized that a lot of the time, simply listening to what someone else has to say when asked about themselves goes a long way.

Calista Flockhart on her weight: 'I just have small bones, and I just am lucky.'

Calista Flockhart on her weight: 'I just have small bones, and I just am lucky.'
Calista Flockhart works so rarely in television or films, it always feels like an event when she?s actually out of the house. She?s now starring in Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, and she plays Lee Radziwell, Jackie Kennedy?s sister. She?s joined by Naomi Watts (Babe Paley), Diane Lane (Slim Keith), Chloe Sevigny (CZ Guest), Molly Ringwald (Joanne Carson) and Demi Moore (Ann Woodward). Calista recently gave a pretty great interview to Maureen Dowd at the NY Times about Feud, about being married to Harrison Ford and about life in general. She also touches on the ?90s sh-t all of the conversations about her short skirts and whether she had an eating disorder. Some highlights:

She would have had lunch with the Swans: ?Maybe once. I felt very sorry for them. Here they are, the toast of New York ? rich, jewels, apartments, houses in the country, houses in Europe. They travel all the time on private planes. They have yachts. They are dictating what is in and what is not. Underneath all that, they were very sad, very lonely and really unhappy women.?

She loved the costumes but her real style isn?t like that: ?I should have lived in the ?60s, for sure?[but] I?m not going to wear a purse that says Gucci all over it, because that just seems strange. I?m also just very frugal. I have some really beautiful designer clothes, but 90 percent of my wardrobe is from Nordstrom. Just what?s comfortable, what works. I have a uniform. I switch from a gray sweater to a black sweater back to the gray sweater to a black sweater.?

On Lee Radziwell: ?Truman Capote recognized that she was living in her sister?s shadow, and he would say things: ?You?re so much prettier. You?re so much smarter. You?re more interesting. You have better style.? She really needed to hear that. I think it made her really love Truman. He was fun, and she confided in him, like they all did.?

On all of the criticism of Ally McBeal?s short skirts: ?I have a lot of distance and perspective, and I?m still incredulous. I cannot believe that I was scrutinized and pursued like that. It was intense and it was unfair.? Ms. Flockhart recalled how casually that wardrobe decision had been made: ?I said to the costume designer: ?It either has to be long or short. It can?t be in the middle, because that doesn?t make my leg look good.? She said, ?OK, let?s go short.? I said, ?Cool, let?s go short.? And then all of a sudden there was this huge short-skirt scandal, which was really fun.?

The conversations about whether she was anorexic: ?I don?t think that would ever happen today. They call it body-shaming now. I haven?t thought about it in a long time, but it?s really not OK to accuse someone of having a disease that a lot of people struggle with. It wasn?t the case, and there was nothing I could do to convince anybody or get out of it. If I had worn a big padded bra, they probably would never have been able to target me in that way. I look back at pictures, and I?m the same then as I am now, and nobody says a word now. I was an easy target, I guess. It was painful, it was complicated. I loved working on ?Ally McBeal,? and it just made it sour. I was very sleep-deprived and I was depressed about it. I did think that it was going to ruin my career. I didn?t think anybody would ever hire me again, because they would just assume I had anorexia, and that would be the end of that.?

She?s always been naturally small: ?I honestly have never been in a situation where I have to watch my weight. My mom is 4-11 now, and she weighed 93 pounds when she was married. Talk about a little tiny elf. I just have small bones, and I just am lucky.?

Why her marriage to Harrison has worked: She mused that one of the reasons that it has worked is because she was ?really content being home? as a full-time mom. ?I didn?t have the same dreams at the time, so we weren?t competing with each other. We?re very independent of each other in some ways and probably incredibly codependent on each other in others.?

Her independence startled him at first. ?It scares him, I think, sometimes. When I first met him, he said, ?You are the most self-sufficient woman in the world, and I don?t know how I feel about that.? I remember I said, ?What are you talking about?? Because I didn?t recognize I was self-sufficient. The other reason it works is, we?re both pretty introverted. We stay home a lot, homebodies, which is nice.?

[From The NY Times]

If you go to the full piece, there?s a cute back-and-forth between Harrison and Calista about how they met (Harrison was interviewed separately). Basically, Harrison caught a glimpse of Calista at the 2002 Golden Globes and he was like ?who is that??? He went over to her and tried to chat her up but she was ambivalent, but they kept talking later in the evening and he asked her out, and they?ve basically been together since their first date. She doesn?t make a big deal about ?oh, I?m the wife of a Hollywood power player,? and it feels like neither of them really revel in that side of things. She?s just happy at home, raising her son and living her life. I also believe her when she says that she?s just naturally small. Some people are just fine-boned. And yes, all of those conversations about her body were gross at the time.
