These are photos of Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber, one of my favorite couples, on The Coney Island boardwalk in Brooklyn, NY doing scenes for their film, The Bleeder. I guess we know now why Liev is sporting that goofy horseshoe mustache. The Bleeder is based on the true story of heavyweight boxer Chuck Wepner, who went 15 rounds against Muhammad Ali in 1975. The movie Rocky is said to be loosely based on Wepner. Liev is playing Wepner and I’m assuming Naomi plays his love interest or wife.
I just love to see Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber together, particularly on set. Her trashy red wig and costume are giving me vibes of her St. Vincent character, in which she played a Russian prostitute. (If you haven’t seen that film, with Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy, check it out, it’s a gem.) Naomi tramps up nicely. I checked out the director and screenwriters for this film and they’re relatively unproven, at least I’ve never heard of their work. I hope The Bleeder is decent so that it doesn’t become their Gigli or By The Sea, but I guess the stakes are not as high for Liev and Naomi. They’re both excellent character actors who work steadily. Whether this movie is lousy, middling or excellent I don’t think they’ll be affected much.
If you’re looking for a new show to watch and have Showtime on demand, check out Liev in Ray Donovan, it’s one of my favorites. He’s also in the new film, Spotlight, about a group of journalists in Boston who investigated the pedophile priest coverup in the Catholic Church. Kaiser just saw it and she said it’s excellent.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler star together in the upcoming comedy Sisters. The film looks completely silly, borderline stupid, but you know what? I?ll probably see it and enjoy it. Amy and Tina are magical together, and the film is basically being sold on their decades-long friendship and the spark that happens whenever they?re in the same room together. They cover the new issue of Glamour, ?the social media issue,? which is weird because Tina in particular is not a social media person at all. You can read their funny interview here ? they interview each other, so the piece is basically just a collection of one-liners.
Tina on her ?woman-child? Sisters character: ?Woman-child, I think, is in reference to the fact that there are many male comedians who play man-childs?man-childs is a word. I do think it?s fun to be able to play a character that?s in no way aspirational and in no way a role model, and the more female characters there are on-screen, there?s less pressure on every character to represent everyone. I love playing people who are flawed.?
Amy on ?dressing sexy? in your 40s: ?Of course women in their forties can dress sexy. And, you know, the term sexy is very subjective.?
Tina on dressing sexy: ?Yeah, I do also think that by the time you are in your forties, what you want to wear and what you think is sexy is not always, like, for another person. It?s what makes you feel good…. Sexy is all relative. As an SNL writer I have seen people who are famously sexy, women famous for being beautiful, come in as hosts. The male writers would be so excited; then a couple days in, they are over it. If you know you have 0.000 shot at the person, your body kind of shuts down?and it?s more about who you actually relate to.?
Amy on Tina?s accomplishments: ?I think one of your greatest accomplishments was transitioning from the captain you were at SNL to creating a show [30 Rock]. That is so hard?extricating yourself from a place you were so comfortable and successful, then doing something else so well. That, and the fact that you invented the word flerm.?
Tina on Amy?s accomplishments: ?I would say that one of your greatest accomplishments, Amy Poehler, is that you have so successfully used your art and comedy as a source of positivity in the world, by creating Smart Girls [an online community for girls, encouraging them to be their authentic selves], by making [Leslie in] Parks and Rec not only a positive feminist character but creating a good-hearted worldview within that program.?
Tina on the advice she would give herself ahead of her wedding: ?If I could give myself advice on my wedding day, it would be, ?Hunker down, September 11 is coming.? Because I got married in June of 2001. [Pauses.] Any other advice? I don?t know, maybe for a second I would maybe say, like, ?Start having babies earlier so that you could have maybe had one more,? because I do like how they come out. But at the same time, that would have probably made it hard for me to do some things that I wanted to do in that time.?

It?s been said before, of course, but I really love the way Amy and Tina are truly each other?s fans. Like, Amy is probably Tina?s favorite comedian and Amy admires Tina so much. It?s more than friendship between them ? it?s a model of how two successful and bright women can work together, encourage and challenge each other and still support each other professionally and personally. And these are the same women who got told off by Taylor Swift for ?not supporting women.? Seriously.

When Sandra Bullock was promoting her film, Our Brand is Crisis, she was asked about the rumors that she had adopted a daughter. Those stories were based on paparazzi sightings of Sandra, with US Magazine reporting that “she was photographed carrying a baby girl into an LA hospital” on September 27th. So they weren’t entirely unfounded reports, only Sandra denied them. About a month later, she told BET that she hadn’t adopted a second child. “There?s only one adopted child in my household and his name is Louis. If I had a second adopted child everyone would be hearing about it. I would be loud and clear and say ?yes, I have officially adopted a second child.? Now, Louis will be it.”
Do you notice how carefully she worded that denial? She said “there’s only one adopted child in my household.” In the new issue of People, Sandra admits that she did adopt a girl, a three and half year-old daughter named Laila, but reveals why she had to keep Laila’s adoption a secret – Laila was a child in foster care and the adoption process would have been jeopardized if the news got out before it become official. She had signed a “confidentiality agreement stating that you will not release any photos of the child to a third party to protect their identity” and she was still being evaluated by CPS as a potential adoptive parent. Tabloids were threatening to publish the photos, which could potentially send Laila back into the foster care system. In order to shut it down and ensure that the adoption went through, Sandra had to get lawyers involved and have the publications threatened.
In People, Sandra, 51, explains that she started the adoption process about three years ago when her son, Louis, now five, asked for a sibling. Now that Laila is in their lives Sandra says “there’s no doubt in my mind that she was supposed to be here.” She also has a lot of touching things to say about helping Laila adjust to her new family after the little girl had bounced around in foster care. I have to admit I did get teared up a few times while reading the full article. Here are some highlights. The full article is very long and detailed, I’m surprised at how much Sandra opened up, and it’s worth picking up the print edition for.
On helping Laila adjust to her new life and family
I knew she was scared, and all I wanted was for her to know Louis and I weren’t going anywhere. Something I learned in Louis’s preschool was the saying “Mamas always come back.” and this was what I kept saying to her. It requires sleeping on the floor next to her bed and holding her hand so she can go to sleep; it requires being A-OK with a little being attached to your body at all times during the day. Saying “I’ll be right back” or “I’m taking Louis to school” wasn’t enough. I had to walk her through all the steps of where I am going to assure her I wasn’t leaving her. That’s what you do.
On making Laila feel comfortable and safe
With an older child they are experiences that they have already had that molded their personality: some good and many that are heartbreakingly sad. As a parent of a child who has experienced this, you have to be prepared to psychologically educate yourself to the steps you will need to take in order to repair any damage that may have taken place before your arrival.
On having to hide Laila before the adoption went through
We had a scary emergency-room run, and unbeknownst to me, a photographer had followed us and taken a photo of us in line… The next day, I learned that a photo of her was being shopped around for sale to every outlet around the world. I had promised and legally agreed to protect her from something like this, and here I was chasing down lawyers ? having them begging everyone to keep her safe… thankfully we were able to get to all the periodicals and prevent the publication of the photos.
Her kids know to go inside if they hear helicopters or a drone
She now knows that when we hear a helicopter or a drone, it’s time to run inside. Usually Louis grabs her and carries her under the trampoline.
On saying she hadn’t adopted another child
Thank God it was asked the way that it was, because she wasn’t adopted at the time. So all I said was that there was only one adopted child in my home…

Sandra was asked if she’s ever considered marrying again, and she didn’t talk specifically about her boyfriend, photographer Bryan Randal, but she did say that she wants to be in a committed relationship with “lots of love and laughter.” (It’s clear that Bryan is still in her life because he’s credited with the photos for the article.) Sandra also revealed that Laila is a jokester and that she absolutely loves Bruno Mars and knows all the words to his “appropriate” videos.
I came into this story skeptical that Sandra wasn’t open with the press about the fact that she had adopted a second child, but I fully understand why she fudged a little when so much was at stake. I also have a lot of respect for her for adopting a daughter from the foster care system and being so committed to helping her adjust. It’s a sweet story and Laila will surely live a charmed life with her protective big brother and famous mom.

Some of you hate the fact that Kim Kardashian has been telling us every little detail about her pregnancy, including how much she herself loathes being pregnant. I don?t know, though ? I kind of hate-respect her for being so honest about it. Her pregnancy has been a pain in the ass from start to finish, and I appreciate the fact that Kim isn?t sugarcoating any of it. Last week, Kim wrote about how Baby Boy Kardashian-West was breech and how she did not want to go through another C-section to deliver him. It looks like she was serious about all that. Yesterday, Kim posted a story to her subscription site where she described the painful process of her doctors manually turning the baby around in utero. OMG. This story makes my lady parts shut down completely.
Kim Kardashian West delivery fears have been alleviated ? her baby is no longer breech.The reality star posted a pregnancy update to her website on Tuesday, just a week after revealing that her son was in the wrong position for childbirth.
?This weekend, I checked into the hospital and underwent a procedure called an external cephalic version (ECV), which is done to manually turn the baby from a breech position to a head-down position,? the 35-year-old shared.
Kardashian West, who is 37 weeks along, said she was given an IV with medication to relax her uterus while three doctors worked together to turn the baby. The procedure, according to the star, came with several risks, including the chance that her water might break or her baby?s heart rate would drop. In either case, an emergency cesarean section would have taken place.
?They don?t give you any pain medication, and let me tell you: This was soooooo painful. Probably more painful than childbirth,? Kardashian West, who was joined at the hospital by her sisters and husband Kanye West, shared. ?BUT it worked!!!?
The baby is now in the ?right position,? and the star said ?it feels so good to not have the stress of thinking I need a C-section.? Kardashian West, who is ?so thankful? for her doctors, isn?t out of the woods yet though ? she now has a cold and sinus infection. So how will she recover while keeping up with mommy duties for North, 2? With the help of her favorite babysitter: sister Kourtney Kardashian.
?I?m going to have North have a sleepover with her cousins for the next two days so I can really sleep and get better,? she shared. ?She loves sleepovers and I really need this time to get better. I haven?t been able to sleep and just need to catch up.?

I get that Kim isn?t anyone?s favorite, but can we all agree that her pregnancy drama is the real deal and that we genuinely have some sympathy for her? My God. To have doctors manually turn around a breech baby with no painkillers? yikes. It looks like she was serious about not wanting a C-section too. Damn, Kim.

Reese Witherspoon, through her production company Pacific Standard, has optioned the 2010 book Barbie and Ruth: The Story of the World?s Most Famous Doll and the Woman Who Created Her. The 39-year-old actress seems to be eyeing the title role herself. This isn’t the first time: back in 2012, she acquired the rights to Cheryl Strayed’s memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail and played her on the big screen (in the more marquee-friendly titled Wild), receiving critical kudos and an Oscar nomination for her performance.
Barbie and Ruth tells the tale of Ruth Handler (no relation to Chelsea), who created the now iconic doll after watching her daughter, Barbara, playing with paper dolls featuring teenagers, as opposed to the baby dolls that were popular at the time. Handler modeled Barbie on a German adult novelty toy (really – where do you think she got those boobs?) with her husband, who owned the toy company Mattel. The doll debuted in 1959 and has become one of the most popular toys of all time. In fact, one Barbie doll is sold every 3 seconds somewhere in the world. Despite having over 150 careers, the doll has courted controversy over the years for creating unrealistic expectations for girls and even grown women. Ruth handled her critics with aplomb, writing in her 1994 autobiography, Dream Doll: The Ruth Handler Story, “My whole philosophy of Barbie was that through the doll, the little girl could be anything she wanted to be. Barbie always represented the fact that a woman has choices.”
In 1970, Ruth was diagnosed with breast cancer, and, since she was unable to find a suitable prosthetic breast, she developed her own – using plastic for good for once – and ended up founding a company to produce more realistic prosthesis for breast cancer survivors. She died in 2002 at age 85 from complications after surgery for colon cancer. The woman led a very compelling life and her story is sure to make for an interesting film.
Reese and Ruth do have some things in common, which leads me to believe she’s correct in casting herself as the lead. Pacific Standard, which Reese started with partner Bruna Papandrea, focuses on acquiring movie rights to stories featuring more female protagonists. At Glamour?s Women of the Year event last month, Reese spoke out about the sad lack of female-focused movies, saying, ?Films with women at the center are not a public service project. They are a big-time, bottom line-enhancing, money-making commodity.?
Reese’s production company was also responsible for producing Gone Girl (excellent) and Hot Pursuit (meh). She’s aggressively working to bring more female faces to the big screen and even helping young women improve their economic literacy skills, so this project is completely in line with her girl power vibe. I guess this means that she’s no longer in contention for the real-life Barbie movie that Diablo Cody is writing? But, at 39, it’s probably a given that she would be out of contention to play a living teen-aged doll anyway. Damn you and your ageism, Hollywood!

Miranda Lambert follows up her 6th CMAFemale Vocalist of the Year victory with her 1st Cosmopolitan Magazine cover on the January issue. With the exception of some strategically leaked who-did-what-to-whom directly following the announcement of the end of her marriage to Blake Shelton, Miranda has kept relatively quiet about her divorce. After some breathing room, she is ready to open up a little:
On whether her views on marriage changed:“We were together for 10 years, married for four, were very quickly divorced, and are friends. I’m still processing everything and figuring out where to go and what happened. [Marriage is] a tough business, and we gave it our best college try ? If I ever were to get married again?which is completely not on my radar at all right now?I feel like it’s not about it being a step in life. It’s not about a piece of paper or a diamond. It’s the way you feel about somebody and the commitment in your heart.”
On living a life full of everything:“I just want to live a life full of everything. Some of that might mean nights on my porch crying, drinking whiskey, and going, ‘Man this sucks right now.’ I don’t necessarily want toknowthat I have really bad, long, lonely nights ahead of me, but I have had some, and I still have a bunch ahead of me. But it’s about living in the moment and feeling every tinge of pain, then waking up the next day and going, ‘All right, I’m going to ride my ponies. I get what she says about marriage not being a piece of paper but I am not sure I agree with it not being a step. Prior to marriage, my husband knew I really had no intention of going anywhere; I was committed to him and he to me. But getting married for us was a huge step; like a giant stride over that greasy mud puddle when you are wearing your best heels step. Maybe she is saying she saw things only as a logical progression? They were dating for a while so the next ?step? would be to get married; once married, she realized she had not focused on how committed they were (or their lack of commitment, allegedly)?
She looks good in the photos; all sun-kissed and sporting flouncy hair – my hair doesn?t flounce, I have flounce envy. I don?t have much to say about the dresses; they are fine ? LBDs with plunging necklines, not terribly creative but complimentary on her. I am digging the blue nail polish and accessories though, I would wear the H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks out of those bracelets.

Meg Ryan has a new interview in Porter Magazine, and it?s a puzzler. Meg comes right out and says that she doesn?t want to have a conversation about aging and what it?s like to be 54 years old in an industry that worships 22-year-olds. CB and I were debating if Meg?s comments were pointed, perhaps at Christie Brinkley, who went on a few very public dates with John Mellencamp, Meg?s one-time crusty lover. Brinkley has been on a promotional tour where all she talks about is aging and being beautiful and all of that. So? maybe Meg is taking a very subtle swipe. Or maybe Meg is trying to shut down the conversation about aging because she?s been f?king with her face for years and she looks like a totally different person (not unlike Christie Brinkley, come to think of it). Here are some highlights from Meg?s interview:
On conversations about aging: “There are more important conversations than how women look and how they are aging. I love my age. I love my life right now. I love what I know about. I love the person I’ve become, the one I’ve evolved into. In my life I’ve been scrappy as hell, but I feel easy with things now. I think that comes with age. We get stuck in these conversations about looks and hair color and our roots. It’s interesting and funny for five minutes, but it’s not that interesting.”
So many haters: “There’s a lot of hatred in the world today?it’s so easy to judge. Imagine being a hater. How stupid! My women friends are not sitting around talking about…well, sometimes there are conversations like that, but the people I value talk about kids growing up, what kind of world they are going into, what we are eating, what we are breathing.”
On fame: “[It?s] definitely something I have had an evolving relationship to. I’m the kind of person who doesn’t want to be separated out…Fame is so cheap. Actually it’s not cheap, it’s privacy that is expensive.”
On social media: “Instagram and all that stuff is a lot of fun, but everybody has an audience now and that’s new. I think people can now relate to the idea of strangers knowing about them: sometimes that’s fine and sometimes you are misunderstood. Sometimes there’s misinformation.”
She?s still friends with her ex, John Mellencamp: “He’s the perfect kind of songwriter for this story. He’s world class. There’s not one speck of music that’s not his. He’s got some kind of magic touch.”
She?s happy: “I’m with my life right now in a way that I adore, with my kids and my world.”

Don?t get me wrong, I?m all for women telling other women that superficial conversations about hair and beauty are not the most important conversations we should be having. That being said, I gossip for a living, so I think Meg is being too cute by half. We know she tweaks the hell out of her face. We KNOW it. She knows we know it. We know she felt the same pangs of superficiality and vanity that millions of other women feel. So why not talk about it?

I?m surprised to realize this, but Johnny McDaid and Courteney Cox were together for a somewhat significant amount of time, since at least late 2013. Meaning they were together for two years or longer. They announced their engagement in June 2014, and they?ve allegedly been planning the wedding ever since. Johnny is an Irishman, but he decamped to LA to be with CC, and he?s been living in her home this whole time. But according to sources, Johnny packed his bags a few weeks ago and now the engagement is totally done.
Courteney Cox and her fiance rocker Johnny McDaid have broken up, and called off their wedding — but we’ve found out they fought like hell to make it work. Sources close to the former couple tell us the Snow Patrol guitarist packed up and moved out of Courteney’s homes in Malibu and L.A. shortly before Thanksgiving. We’re told he flew back home to England.
They got engaged in June 2014 after 6 months of dating, but we’re told they’ve been struggling over lifestyle choices: She enjoys going out with friends, but he’s more low-key and private. Photogs last spotted them together back in August. Our sources say they tried going to counseling to work out their issues, but finally they mutually decided to end things.

Radar had much the same story, and it seems like Radar might have even broken the story of the split. Radar?s sources make it sound like this was mostly Johnny?s call, that up until a few weeks ago, Cox was still planning the wedding and now she?s devastated: ?Johnny was really the love of her life. She doesn?t know where this came from.? Sources claim that McDaid didn?t really like Cox?s LA lifestyle, nor did he like her ?cougar? reputation. Page Six also has a lengthy piece about why they split, with sources claiming that McDaid didn’t like that Cox was so close to so many male costars, and some claiming that Cox hated that Johnny smoked/vaped.
Just FYI: everyone agrees on the fact that McDaid was the one to pull the plug on the engagement. So was this just your average cold-feet situation? Or was it something else? I noticed time and time again that Courteney really started doing some crazy stuff to her face when she got with McDaid. I mean, she?s been tweaking, filler-ing and Botoxing for years now, but she did look extra-jacked when she was with Johnny. CB doesn?t think this split was about her appearance, and I guess I sort of agree. The split might have happened because of what?s behind Cox?s constant tweaking though, which is that she?s a woman deathly afraid of aging.
