Anna Kendrick has been exceptionally open about how much of herself she?s put into her performance for Alice, Darling. The movie portrays a woman in an emotional and psychologically abusive relationship. During the press for the movie, Anna divulged that she?d experienced the same type of abuse with an ex and that family and friends helped her leave the relationship. Because she had some distance between the abuse and the filming, Anna was able to give her character the vulnerability she needed without retriggering her own trauma. However, what Anna didn?t anticipate was how much the promotional junket would weigh on her. She finally had to admit she couldn?t go through with all her obligations and she established boundaries.
Having a decades-long career, actor Anna Kendrick has experienced her share of promotional tours for the films she?s been in. Yet, with her most recent psychological thriller Alice, Darling, the Pitch Perfect star has revealed that her own emotional ties to the film have made the press junket situations ?trickier to navigate? than ever before.
?People have asked me, ?Was it challenging to shoot the movie?? and I guess that question makes sense,? said the Oscar-nominated actor. ?But I?m actually finding that the press is the thing that has been a little trickier to navigate, making sure that I?m OK and feeling safe in my body.?
Highlighting one specific situation of multiple, fast-paced interviews, Kendrick described feeling ?shitty? at the end of the day and making a decision to not continue that type of press junkets for the rest of the promotional tour.
?There was a thing early on where I was doing like a junket-style day for Alice, Darling where it?s like six minutes per person and you kind of run through like 30 interviews really quickly, and I went home and was in the shower and was like, ?Why do I feel so shitty right now??? Kendrick said. ?And I sort of told everyone, ?I don?t think I can do another thing like that.??
She added, ?I totally get it?s no journalist?s job to show up for me in the same headspace that I?m in, but I?m trying really hard to go into these conversations really open and it feels kind of strange to be talking to somebody who clearly just has a million things to do that day? I was like, ?Oh, I need to draw a boundary there. I can?t really be talking about this in that style of conversation.??

This makes perfect sense to me. As much as the script for Alice, Darling might have paralleled Anna?s experience, as an actress, she was probably able to lose herself in the character. That would have given her the layer of protection she needed to not fall back into that place emotionally. But on the press rounds, Annas speaking about her own experience and being asked repeatedly to relive it. She probably thought she was ready for the discussion but found out she had limits. Trauma rears its ugly head when we least expect it.
I also understand what Anna?s saying about having a deeply personal conversation with someone who isn?t on the same page as her. True, it?s not the journalists? responsibility to place themselves in her shoes. But it does make it that much harder to discuss something like this, especially if she?s opened herself up and the journalist is just looking for a pull quote with one eye on the clock. So I?m glad Anna recognized she needed to draw those boundaries. They will do a lot of good putting this film out there. I hope those involved benefit from it as well.

Anna Kendrick has a new film out called Alice, Darling. It looks like it?s a great film but also like it will be incredibly difficult to watch. Anna plays Alice, who is in a psychologically abusive relationship with Simon. Her friends suspect/know something is wrong, but they can?t get through to Alice. Watching the trailer made my stomach turn. If the trailer is triggering, I can only imagine what the film is like. You can see the trailer here. Unfortunately, the reason Anna is so convincing in her role as Alice is because she was drawing on personal experience. Anna received the script soon after getting out of an emotionally abusive relationship. The movie was so similar to what she had gone through, that Anna said if it wasn?t being filmed several months from when she read it, she risked being retraumatized. But she had the space and supportive cast and director, which kept her safe. So they were able to tell the story in a way that may help others.
Anna Kendrick?s latest film, ?Alice, Darling,? didn?t need an emotional abuse consultant. Its emotional abuse consultant was Anna Kendrick.
Lead actor and executive producer Kendrick had recently come out of an emotionally abusive relationship of her own when she was sent the screenplay, written by Alanna Francis, which details the experience of a woman struggling, while on vacation with two close friends, to come to terms with the fact that she?s been psychologically abused by her boyfriend.

So here?s one of the rare gossip stories about Anna: she?s apparently been quietly dating Bill Hader for the better part of a year. Hader was married from 2006 to 2018 and he shares three daughters with his ex-wife. The last we heard, he was quietly dating Rachel Bilson in late 2019 and early 2020. Hader and Bilson broke up in the summer of 2020, and it looks like he began dating Anna months later.

Anna has been dating Bill quietly for over a year, says the source. They met years ago. Shes hosted Saturday Night Live and theyve done a movie together, but they got together well after the movie.
They are both very private people, and with the pandemic it was easy to keep it quiet, adds the source. Theyre both hysterical so they must keep each other laughing all of the time. Shes really, really happy.
Reps for both actors declined to comment for PEOPLE. The Oscar-nominated Pitch Perfect actress, 36, and Hader, 43, costarred in the 2019 Disney+ Christmas movie Noelle together.
PEOPLE confirmed in July 2020 that Hader and former girlfriend Rachel Bilson amicably broke up six months after making their relationship public at the Golden Globes. Bilson and Hader had starred together in the 2013 romantic comedy The To Do List. Maggie Carey, that films director, was married to Hader from 2006 to 2018. They share three daughters: Hayley Clementine, 7, Harper, 9, and Hannah Kathryn, 12.

Anna Kendrick had a rough end to her January. She tweeted last week that she had just been hospitalized for kidney stones. Kidney stones are bits of minerals and salt that form into hard ?stones? inside the kidneys and work their way out in what I?ve been told is a pain on par with childbirth. What was noteworthy about Anna?s medical condition was not that she got kidney stones, 1 in 10 people will in their lifetime, but that she took the time to thank the doctors and nurses who treated her. And Anna articulated a very common problem, especially among women, that we ignore pain.

Increasingly, as the years go by, the Tonys become more of a ?glitzy? event, more of a regular awards show. Part of that is because there are more ?movie stars? wanting to branch out into theater (or go back to their theater roots). Part of it is financial too – it costs a lot of money to launch a Broadway show these days, thus, there?s more money spent on the Tonys. Anyway, Anna Kendrick is one of those movie stars who started in theater (she?s actually a Tony Award winner) and she?s pretty much the textbook definition of ?musical theater geek.? Anna wore this Miu Miu gown which? I mean, it?s on-brand for Anna, but I dislike it. I dislike everything, especially that little red bow – God, I hate that bow – and Anna?s sickly Pink eye makeup. This is not the look.
I enjoy the fact that Bee Shaffer is getting more involved with her mom?s world. She?s a beautiful young woman, and she looks amazing in high-end design. Bee wore a Alexander McQueen gown from the current season, while her mom Anna Wintour wore Maison Margiela (John Galliano?s label).
Michelle Wilson in Hakaan. This is very pretty, albeit a very ?standard? look for the Tony Awards. Versions of this dress in black were probably on every producer?s wife.
I don?t have an ID on Uma Thurman?s ensemble, but it?s lovely and simple and chic.
I love this photo of Cynthia Erivo (in CG) because she looks like she doesn?t want to be there, at all. This is how we should all walk the red carpet: looking great, but also looking like we?re about to kill somebody.
