Celebrities and good causes always seem to go together, and last night (May 17) some of Hollywood?s finest converged at the Heal the Bays Bring Back the Beach Fundraiser.
?Pretty Woman? actress Julia Roberts showed up at the Santa Monica shindig with her hunky husband Danny Moder.
Additionally, ?Butterfly Effect? star Amy Smart was in the house, posing for the paparazzi in a gorgeous spring yellow dress.
Meanwhile, Ali Larter, Rachelle Lefevre, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus were busy hobnobbing with guests and raising money for the environmental effort.

Last night was the LA premiere of Jesus Henry Christ, the film which Julia Roberts co-produced with her sister Lisa. Julia doesn?t star in the film – it features performances by Michael Sheen and Toni Collette, two wonderful actors. But Julia was still THE STAR of the red carpet, meaning that she was the most photographed person there, and considering Julia’s red carpet appearances are few and far between, let’s talk about her! What do you think of her school-girl ensemble? Eh. While I like that Julia is the rare over-40s actress who doesn?t feel the need to tart it up and show off too much skin, I feel like this look is ?too young? in a completely different way. I actually thought Julia was in costume as a Catholic school-girl for a moment, you know? Still, the dress looks comfortable. And Julia still has those great legs.
Does anyone else think Julia needs to stop parting her hair down the center? She needs to mix it up with a side part, I think.
Julia?s little niece Emma was there too. She went monochromatic as well. I would love to see Julia and Emma switch outfits – Julia in the smart suit, Emma in the high-necked black dress. Right? They should have switched.
And here?s Michael Sheen! So cute. Rachel McAdams was not with him.

A few short years ago, Hollywood was really trying to make Emma Roberts happen. She was the new Nancy Drew and also starred in family friendly movies like Hotel for Dogs and Aquamarine. Then she had a bit role in Valentine’s Day and a larger one in Scream 4, but something seemed to fall apart in the aftermath to the point where — despite all the nepotism (which Emma has denied exists) that comes with being Julia Roberts’ niece — Emma decided it was a good idea to star in a movie called The Girl with the Tramp Stamp Tattoo. What gives?
In the meantime, Emma has been dating and dumping Chord Overstreet, whom she was rumored to have treated badly, and she’s just gotten back together with him, but he looks embarrassed to be seen with her. That’s not the only bit of strangeness in Emma’s life right now though, for she deferred college after one semester, and this week’s issue of the Enquirer has a story about how Emma has been hitting the bottle pretty hard lately. So much so that Aunt Julia wants to save her “wild child niece” with some “tough love” to prevent Emma from becoming “next Lindsay Lohan.” Ouch.
Julia Roberts has stepped in to save her wild-child niece Emma from self-destructing, say insiders. Pals say the 21-year-old actres went off the rails after breaking up with “Glee” hunk Chord Overstreet in January, and now her concerned aunt is begging Emma to move in with her and her family in a desperate attempt to avert a full-scale meltdown.
“Emma is out of control,” revealed a close source. “Ever since she and Chord split, she’s been on a tear. She’s been partying hard in nightclubs and at Hollywood functions even though she’s barely of legal drinking age.”
Emma got tongues waggng while she was still dating Chord by flirting with 40-year-old actor-ricker Jared Leto at a Hollywood hotspot. And before that, the starlet reportedly needed to be carried out of a Michigan nightclub after partying up a storm at her Scream 4 co-star Hayden Panettiere’s 21st birthday celebration.
Her behavior is a huge red flag to her aunt. “She told Emma it woul be best if she moved in for a while with her, her husband Danny and their three kids,” said the source. “Julia thinks their calm, family-centric lifestyle will mellow her niece. She isn’t going to stand around and watch Emma crash and burn like so many other young stars.”
The Pretty Woman beauty is said to be “especially unhappy” about the movie Emma’s currently filming, Adult World, in which she plays an adut bookstore worker, according to another source.
“Julia feels Emma’s new movie will give her the wrong image,” said the second source. “She feels if she can have some control over Emma she can help her avoid some of the pitfalls of the business.”
Although Emma’s rep denies that her conduct has become a big concern to Julia, the young actress’ behavior is especially troubling because substance abuse runs in the family. Her dad, actor Eric Roberts, appeared on “Celebrity Rehab” in 2010 to kick a longtime addiction to marijuana.

It’s rather hilarious to think that Julia would be concerned about Emma acting in a film that contains potentially risque subject matter when Julia herself rose to fame immediately after playing a prostitute, right? As far as the drinking and partying is concerned, Emma’s a 21-year-old woman. She was never caught engaging in underage drinking, and she’s got no DUIs just yet. If this story is true, then Julia probably can’t stop Emma from eventually going off the rails if that’s the direction in which she’s truly headed. Right now, it’s too soon to tell. In other words, this is probably a made-up story.

With just one day left before her latest film hits theaters, Julia Roberts visited ABC studios for an appearance on "Good Morning America" on Thursday (March 29).
The 44-year-old actress sat down with George Stephanopoulos while talking about playing the Evil Queen in the Snow White based movie "Mirror Mirror".
With George bringing up that he had heard that Julia brought her three children to the set for much of the filming process, the "Pretty Woman" star confirmed that she was, indeed, accompanied to work by her brood.
Roberts expanded on this by telling, "I had these dresses so big that they could all fit under there. And probably hair and makeup, also, I mean it was a lot of space under there."
Also dishing about the fact that her kids are starting to realize that they have a famous mom, Julia told, "It's kind of a good time to make a family movie. Kids at there school are kind of mentioning it... So we've had a couple of conversations that have gone very naturally and easily and it's not anything that's coming as a huge shock."

Did you guys get a chance to read the full Vanity Fair ?interview? with Julia Roberts for the April issue? It sucked. Hard. We covered the first excerpts from the story here, and you can read the full cover story here at VF (but only if you have the VF app!). When I got my issue, I was kind of disgusted by what passes for a Vanity Fair cover story these days – VF is in the unique position to really do in-depth, expansive, interesting celebrity profiles of the crme de la crme of Hollywood. But instead of, oh, having Julia Roberts sit down with a talented celebrity journalist for a long-winded interview, the VF dude put Julia with her friend, director Mike Nichols, and she and Nichols just sat around for an hour, kissing each other?s asses. Nichols hasn?t even directed Julia in YEARS. To be fair to Julia, VF has been doing these weird, sycophantic, ?let?s send the celebrity?s friend to fake-interview them? cover stories a lot lately – it?s like they?re afraid to have a real interviewer just ask a celebrity real questions.
Anyway, it seems that Julia?s VF story pissed off someone else too – Mike Nichols? wife, Diane Sawyer. Diane versus Julia!!
Diane Sawyer is furious over Julia Roberts? shockingly intimate relationship with her husband, iconic director Mike Nichols. Julia flirted openly with the still-dashing 80-year-old director during a recent interview for Vanity Fair, calling Nichols a ?father figure.? Julia told Nichols, ?You know, my father died when I was nine years old. Mike, I am so beholden to our relationship. You really are a father to me, and I?m so grateful to be in your love and good care all these years.?
When Diane read that, she flipped out, revealed an insider. ?Diane couldn?t believe it,? said the source. ?She felt that Julia was really playing up to Mike, and it made her cringe. Yes, Julia and Mike have worked with each other and are friends, but they hardly have a father-daughter relationship. Diane thought Julia was really laying it on thick!?
Nichols directed Julia in ?Closer? and ?Charlie Wilson?s War?, in 2004 and 2007 respectively.
The source said: ?Diane travels around the world for work, and she?s away quite a bit so she guards her relationship with Mike like a hawk. She doesn?t like anyone – much less Julia Roberts – trying to be overly familiar with her husband. She?s fit to be tied!?

Now? do I believe this? Eh. I believe its essence. I believe that Julia was really pouring on the charm and yes, she was flirting with Nichols throughout the whole piece. She?s JULIA!! That?s who she is. She flirts with every man, married, single, gay, straight, whomever. She has to hold every man?s attention. It’s her “thing”. Now, I think Diane Sawyer knows this about Julia. Diane and Mike Nichols are couple-friends with Julia and probably with Danny Moder too (God knows). Diane and Mike have come out to support several of Julia’s projects, and I believe that everybody gets along in a work-friendly kind of way. I don?t see Diane as the type of woman to be super-pissed at Julia being Julia. But I bet Diane rolled her eyes at the VF story. And I?m surprised Mike Nichols didn?t roll his eyes at that ?father figure? line.

One thing I can admire about Julia Roberts is that she and husband Danny Moder seem committed to raising their children outside of the Hollywood zone. Hence the family’s main home base on a ranch in Taos, New Mexico and a relative dearth of paparazzi photos of the children. These photos of Julia with her 7-year-old twins, Hazel and Phinnaeus, go way back to last September, and I guess I hadn’t realized how fast they’d grown. We all know where Phinnaeus’ got that amazing shade of red hair too, right? People often talk about how Nicole Kidman really should go back to red, but I’ve always felt that way about Julia as well.
Anyway, Julia has been working up to some heavy duty press for the dreadful looking Mirror Mirror, and she’s already given a slightly superior interview to Vanity Fair about how there could never be another Julia. Julia also gave a statement last fall about how she never wanted her kids to find out that she’s playing the Evil Queen, which left plenty of room for punchlines. Still, I sort of think Julia needs to relax about that issue because the Mirror Mirror trailers reveal because her Evil Queen to more of a Sarcastic Queen. It’s nothing like the badass Evil Queen that Charlize Theron has taken on in the upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman movie. Whatever the cause, Julia has calmly explained that she and Danny don’t really let their kids watch much of anything at all:

She’s starred in countless films, but according to the actress, it will be a while before her kids get to see any of them.
Roberts’s three children, 7-year-old twins Hazel Patricia and Phinnaeus Walter and 4 1/2-year-old Henry Daniel, will even have to wait to see her latest film, family flick Mirror Mirror.
“I think they are [too young] considering the part that I play,” Roberts, 44, told reporters at a press conference for the film, in which she plays Snow White’s evil Queen.
“We have a pretty rigid viewing feeling in our house,” she says of her policy with her husband, director Danny Moder, about exposing their kids to their work.
“We’ll find our right time that will be happy and joyous for us to share that all together, but it probably isn?t in two weeks.”
For now, her three kids don’t watch many movies or TV shows at all.
“Those nice, cozy, very short hours before bed, we just really spend together as a family talking and sharing the day and reading books, and really, before you know it, it’s time for bed,” she shares. “Part of it is there’s just not time for that. We would prefer something different in that time.”
Rather than spending family time gathered around the television set, Roberts and Moder share story time with their children.
“We’re more book people in our house,” she explains, adding that her family is interested in “stories and poetry and talking, sharing ideas.”
Which isn?t to say the actress is entirely opposed to her kids watching TV.
“They do get to watch some things,” she says. “But for us, we just feel there’s a real time and a place for it.”

I definitely see Julia’s point, which is family time with cuddles and bedtime stories are much more important than watching whatever garbage happens to be playing on the Disney Channel. Parents of young children know what I’m talking about when I say that the quality of that channel has severely declined in the past couple of years — let’s call it the Hydra Effect — when “Hannah Montanna” went off the air and several other (worse) shows sprung up in its place. Now it’s like Disney keeps playing the same few episodes of “Shake It Up,” “Good Luck, Charlie” and “Hey Jessie” over and over again.
So yes, children’s television in general and many of the movies don’t provide an ample source of great role models. Still, there are ways to frame issues, and Julia comes off sounding sort of holier than thou in this interview. Or does she? However much she tries, her kids will eventually watch all of her movies … and I think she shouldn’t be nearly as worried about the Evil Queen role as the one where she plays a prostitute a law student. Egads!

So far, Julia Roberts has been able to keep the fact that she’s playing the Evil Queen from her kids, but that certainly doesn’t mean that she didn’t acquire some, uh, baggage while on the set of her as-yet-untitled “Snow White” movie. Presumably, Julia’s metabolism has caught up with her as she’s progressed into her 40s, which means that she’s no longer able to stay rail thin without effort. How tragic. Allegedly and according to The Enquirer, Julia’s pissed off about this weight gain because it makes her look really bad next to her hardbodied husband, Danny Moder. Here he is looking pretty good while competing in the Malibu Triathlon:
Desperate to maintain her “Pretty Woman” figure after a recent weight gain, Julia Roberts has turned into a workout maniac, say pals.
The fiery redhead, who turned 44 on Oct. 28, is furious at herself for piling on 10 pounds while filming her role as the Evil Queen in the as-yet-untitled new “Snow White” movie.
And the mom of three is determined to trim down by pounding the pavement with pals. In fact, Julia was recently spotted looking winded after jogging with a companion near her Los Angeles home.
Her goal, say insiders, is to get as lean and mean as her six pack-sporting spouse, cameraman Danny Moder.
“Julia saw the photos of herself in the beach in Hawaii this past August and thought she looked pretty good in a bikini,” said an insider, “But standing next to Danny, with his taught stomach and muscular arms, she seemed completely out of shape in comparison.
“She told him, ‘It’s not fair that you get to look as good as you do without even trying, but I have to bust my ass just to lose a couple of pounds!’ After that, Julia was absolutely determined to look almost as toned was her hubby.”
According to the source, Julia’s biggest problem in her battle of the bulge is that she tends to eat whatever she wants when she’s working. And that’s exactly what happened while making “Snow White” in Montreal.
This isn’t the first time Julia has gained weight on a film set. The 5-foot-9 actress normall weighs between 125 and 130 pounds but balooned to nearly 150 by the time she’d finished filming “Eat Pray Love” on location in Italy in 2009. “In the scene with the pizza, we started shooting at eight in the morning and by 8:45 I’d eaten eight or 10 pieces of pizza,” she told a reporter.
But now she’s running like a madwoman and doing yoga three times a week to get back in fighting form.
Still, the sources says Julia has insisted to pals that she’s not weight-obsessed “like some people in Hollywood.” “I’ll never be a stick figure,” she admitted. “But I want to give Danny a run for his money!”

So is this story true? It’s not farfetched to believe that Julia gained a few pounds on her movie sets in recent years. Certainly, the lure of the everpresent crafts services table would be irresistable for most people, and eating pizza as a requirement for the job, well, that’s tough competition for an aging metabolsm. She probably does feel like a slouch next to her triathlete spouse, but Danny certainly works for his physique, and it never hurts anyone’s health to be in better shape. If that’s the inspiration that Julia needs to start working out, then she’ll be better for it in the long run. Maybe she’ll even get a serotonin rush or two and stop being so bitchy to her overweight sister too. Julia was photographed wearing compression pants on 9/14 although that could just be due to poor circulation, but it might also be a sign that she’s now obsessed with working out to the point of wearing them underneath her regular pants.

By now, the images of Julia Roberts as Evil Queen (in one of two upcoming Snow White adaptations) while clad in an array of budget-looking costumes has been ingrained within our collective gossip memory. If those stills accurately portray the characters’ appearances, Julia looks truly ridiculous in her role and almost like she’s prematurely tossing in the towel to Kristen Stewart’s movie in her corner of Snow White Battle of the Bitches. It’s just as well, because Kristen’s movie really does look better anyway.
However, Julia has a much more pressing matter on her mind in relation to her take on the Evil Queen. As the mother of three children, Julia’s hoping that no one will dare tell them that she’s playing a character that scares the hell out of them. Such a calamity!
SHHH! Don’t tell Julia Roberts’ kids that their mommy is a monster — at least, on the big screen!
The Pretty Woman star recently revealed that she hasn’t told her three children she’s playing the Evil Queen in a live-action version of the animated Disney classic Snow White — because they’re terrified of the character!
“I haven’t spelled it out that I’m the Evil Queen,” Julia admitted in a recent interview. “Because I showed them [Disney's] Snow White and they had nightmares and they cried.”
Julia, 44, has three children with cameraman hubby Danny Moder — fraternal twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, 6, and Henry, 4 — and she never dreamed they’d react so violently to the Evil Queen in Disney’s feature-length cartoon.
“When the kids cried and had nightmares, Julia went to Danny and asked him, ‘Now what do I do?’” a source close to the Moder family told The ENQUIRER.
“She’s afraid to break it to them that she’s now playing that horrible, mean character. So, she’s putting it off as long as possible, and hoping no one else will tell them!”
But a top psychologist believes that Julia should explain her movie character to her kids.
“Children that young are still confused about the difference between reality and fantasy,” famed psychologist Dr. Judy Kuriansky told The ENQUIRER.
“Julia should tell her kids that she can pretend to be mean in a movie, but she’ll never treat them that way.”
Thankfully, Julia’s got some time. The still untitled film won’t be released until March 2012.

Well, I guess this rules out Julia offering up the “I did it for my kids and not the money” excuse when someone inevitably asks why she did this movie. Still, she’s in quite a pickle because, sooner or later, someone’s going to end up telling Julia’s kids that their mommy is playing the Evil Queen, so she may as well ‘fess up to them while they’re still young and capable of virtually unconditional forgiveness. Either that, or perhaps Julia should start being nicer to everyone around her so that she doesn’t have to live in fear of retaliation, including the overweight sister that she takes such joy in tormenting. With stories like that, Julia really seems fit for the Evil Queen role in real life too.
