Remember when years back Kylie Jenner said that she had invented wigs? That drove me nuts. It was in 2016 and its still something my subconscious associates with Kylie. We all know that Kylie is not a wig OG, but Dolly Parton definitely is. Huge beauty pageant style hair has always been a part of her look, and shes been wearing wigs for decades. She shared her six fashion rules with Vogue to promote her new book Behind the Seams, which include wearing high heels, avoiding trends, and embracing wigs. Dolly started wearing wigs when she figured out that teasing and bleaching her hair was damaging it. Her first hairstylist, Colleen Owens, introduced her to her first fall (a piece you blend with your own hair for more volume). Dolly then realized shed never have a bad hair day with wigs. The rest is history.

And it was through her that we found wigs. She was so creative. The wigs were wearing me?I wasn?t wearing the wig! But I loved all the intricate little things that Colleen used to do. It was always the bigger, the better. I started wearing wigs because I quickly realized that bleaching and teasing my hair every day would cause breakage and not look good. It was handy to have several looks that I could just choose from, and never have a bad hair day.?

Im very lucky to have naturally thick hair, but no matter how much I tease or spray it, and no matter how i style it, it does not hold volume at all near the crown of my head. So I would definitely turn to wigs if big floofy hair was the goal. Its great that Dollys always been open about wearing wigs because hair thinning and hair loss is something that happens to so many women. Thats not why Dolly started wearing them, but I think she shows people that its okay to use something artificial if it makes you feel better about yourself or like how you look. Sometimes people equate being authentic with being unvarnished or being au naturel. But its really just about wearing what you like and what makes you happy.

Back in the day, Angelina Jolie loved being in London, and she did a lot of work there. She was made a Dame by QEII for her work with refugees and survivors of sexual violence. She ended up having meetings with (now) Queen Camilla, the Archbishop of Canterbury and she had tea with Prince William and Kate. This post isn?t about Angelina, but I was reminded of that ?tea? back in 2015, because it was so random. It sounded like William and Kate cold-called Angelina and Brad Pitt and invited them to Kensington Palace for no other reason than to stargaze. It made me wonder how many other celebrities William and Kate have desperately tried to meet, only to be turned down. It looks like Dolly Parton is one of those celebrities.
Dolly Parton has revealed the hilarious reason why she turned down an invitation for tea with the Princess of Wales. The country singer, 77, explained she received the coveted invitation from Kate Middleton, 41, whilst she was in London for work.
Whilst sharing her love of the capital, the Jolene singer admitted she almost brushed shoulders with the residents of Buckingham Palace, but unfortunately couldnt go.
Dolly said during an appearance on BBC Radio 2: This time, Lordy, I even got invited to have tea with Kate but I couldnt even go. I thought it was very sweet and nice of her to invite me and one of these days Im going to get to do that ? that would be great.
Then, in true Dolly Parton style, she cracked a joke as to what made her decline Kates invite. She said: But she wasnt going to promote my rock album so I had to say no.
She explained her regret at not having explored more of the city while on tour, but concluded she didnt ever have enough time to play tourist.

?The coveted invitation? like, we have no idea how frequently or infrequently William and Kate entertain, but as a long-time royal watcher, it definitely feels like they don?t have many friends and they aren?t socializing or throwing parties, nor are they known for being particularly nice or generous hosts. They practically turn the lights off and hide out when the pre-BAFTA dinner is held at Kensington Palace. How many times did they mooch dinner off of Harry and Meghan? I do wonder if Kate and William have invited many celebrities to Kensington Palace and they get turned down a lot. Anyway, Dolly Parton is an American treasure and her work ethic is unparalleled. She would be shocked by the lazy duo.

There are so many reasons to love Dolly Parton but one of the things I admire the most about her is her commitment to promoting childhood literacy. Her charity the Imagination Library donates a free book to each child enrolled in the program, from birth (or whenever they are registered) until they turn five. Since 1995, its donated over 200 million books to over 2 million kids across five countries, including the United States. I know its active in many states, but the Library has just expanded statewide into Kansas. So Dolly went there and was interviewed by the governor, Laura Kelly, about why she started Imagination Library. Dollys dad couldnt read, and he was embarrassed by that, so Dolly created this charity in his honor. One of the first places that Imagination Library expanded to outside of Tennessee was Pratt, Kansas, so this statewide expansion is a full-circle moment.
Country superstar, American icon and literacy champion Dolly Parton visited Overland Park on Monday to celebrate a new partnership with the state of Kansas, expanding her Imagination Library program.
Now, if you live anywhere in Kansas and you have a child under 5 years old, you can sign up your child for Dolly Parton?s Imagination Library. The result is that every month your child will receive a book in the mail completely for free.
Beyond the voice, beyond the magnetic personality, Dolly Parton describes her motivation for creating Imagination Library: her father.
?Being that far back in the mountains, Daddy didn?t go to school. My daddy didn?t learn to read or write. That troubled him, troubled me that he was troubled,? Parton said at the J KC?s White Theatre.
?Daddy got to live long enough to see Imagination Library take off, and I thought that was great,? Parton said.
?She is ? she?s Dolly,? Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly said. ?What can I say? There?s no question when she walked into the backstage that that was Dolly Parton.?
Kelly, acting as interviewer, notes the first expansion of Imagination Library outside of Tennessee (Parton?s home state) was into Pratt, Kansas.
The current push to bring the program statewide bookends that move that?s already considered popular in some spots.
?We were told that we would probably get about 1,000 kids in our first year. Well we had 1,000 kids in our first seven hours,? said Kim Hinkle, executive director of the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation.
The group was the first to adopt the program in Johnson County.
?If you sign your child up the day they?re born, they?ll have 60 books in their home library by the time they?re in kindergarten,? Hinkle said.

As if that werent enough, Dolly also visited Olympia, Washington, to celebrate statewide coverage for the Imagination Library there, too. The impact that this charity has makes me emotional just to think about. It can be challenging for people, especially in rural areas, to find and afford high quality books for their kids. Dolly designed this charity so thoughtfully, because getting a new book delivered each month makes a child feel excited and special, and gives them something to look forward to. (It also lightens the burden on parents, since they dont have to remember to do anything.) The books are always age appropriate for the child, so that they may be challenged, but not overwhelmed by the reading level of the book. And there are braille books and audiobooks for children who need them. This is why Dolly is a national treasure. She has taken her power and influence and truly used it for good. And the Imagination Library isnt just a one time thingits an ongoing, years-long commitment to each child who is registered.

I think some people have superstitions about retiring. I had a science teacher in his seventies who refused to retire because he believed he would immediately die. My dad appears to be delaying his own retirement for that reason, at least thats my read on the situation. But there are also people who just dont want to retire at all. One of those people is living legend Dolly Parton. Shes 77 years old and shows no signs of slowing down. In a recent interview she said she doesnt plan on retiring, period, unless something happens to her health or her husband Carl Deans health. She says she hopes she drops dead while performing, which made me laugh.
Dolly would never retire: Dolly Parton is not one to sit around doing nothing. The 77-year-old country music legend made it clear she has no plans to retire anytime soon. ?I would never retire,? she told Greatest Hits Radio host Ken Bruce on Thursday. ?Ill just hopefully drop dead in the middle of a song onstage someday, hopefully one Ive written. But anyway, that?s how I hope to go because we dont have much of a choice in that. As long as Im able to work, as long as my health is good and my husband is good, the only way that I would ever slow down would be for that reason,? she explained. The ?Jolene? singer then declared, ?But in the meantime, Im going to make hay while the sun shines.?
What she plans to do in the future: When asked by Bruce if there is anything she hasn?t done that she?d like to do, the multihyphenate said, ?I have new dreams every day.? One of those dreams is owning her own network television show where she could produce a series about her own life called The Life of Many Colors, for instance.
Parton said she wants to show ?stuff that people haven?t seen or know or heard about and my people and where I come from, how I?ve got to be how and who I am, but to really have the behind the scenes and the adventures of my life.? Those glimpses into her life would include the different bands she has worked with and ?all the situations that can come from that ? the bad, the good, the ugly, the different.?

I think Dolly is so creative and is living out all her dreams and passions, so thats why she wont retire. Shed get bored! But she clearly has built in enough time for herself to rest, otherwise theres no way she could keep doing everything that shes doing. Id totally watch a docuseries about Dolly. There already is one on Netflix but I found it pretty surface level. If anyone wants to learn more about Dollys life, Id recommend her memoir, or if you want less of a time commitment, the podcast Dolly Partons America. But to hear more industry storiesnow that would be interesting. Dollys been in the music industry since the 1960s. You know shes got some stories. But shell never spill the real tea, because shes too classy for that. Shes always been way too nice about Porter Wagoner, the country singer who put her on his popular TV show and helped her career growbut then got jealous and controlling when he realized her star power would inevitably eclipse his. Maybe shell loosen up a bit and tell us some hot gossip, but even if she doesnt, Ill still watch whatever she puts out.

As I get older, I understand more and more that my idea of ?glamorous? might actually be pretty tacky. I also think Southerners have a different idea of glamour and style than, say, Californians or New Yorkers. I like when things look pulled together, when everything matches or coordinates well. I like animal prints, fluffy hairstyles, and French manicures. I think that stuff looks great. And I love the way Dolly Parton looks she?s glittery, flashy, shiny and ?made up.? Would her style work on every woman? No, but it works perfectly on Dolly. Dolly was recently on the WorkLife podcast with Adam Grant, and she spoke about her style and why she feels glamorous in her rhinestones and wigs.
Dolly on the advice she?s received over the years: The main advice that people wanted to give me was to change my look ? to go simpler with my hair and the way that I dress. Not to look so cheap, nobody was ever going to take me seriously, they would say.
Her origin story: ?The way I look and the way I looked then was a country girls idea of glam, just like I wrote in my Backwoods Barbie song. People wanted me to change, they thought I looked cheap. But I patterned my look after the town tramp. Everybody said, Shes trash. And in my little girl mind, I thought, Well, thats what Im going to be when I grow up. It was really like a look I was after. I wasnt a natural beauty. So, I just like to look the way I look. Im so outgoing inside in my personality, that I need the way I look to match all of that.?
She?s so busy: ?I?ve got so many irons in the fire that sometimes I?m burning my own butt. I have to get up earlier, I have to work longer, and I have to have a bigger cup of ambition in the morning to get it all done? I don?t have time to burn out, I?m burning up. I?m a creative person and every new thing will create something else ? energy begets energy and creativity begets creativity, so I just really have to stay with it because I want to see things happen, I want to make things happen.?
How she relaxes: After a stressful work day, Parton said she likes to spend time at home with her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, and either cook or read. She also turns to her relationship with God for comfort: ?I always say when things are bad I pray, when they get worse, I pray harder.?
She doesn?t swell on past mistakes. ?I like to enjoy my work, I like to have it be fun, and I like the people around me to have fun doing it. My biggest regret is I have no regrets.?

I feel like crying whenever I read interviews with Dolly. She just has it figured out. She never misses! Think of all of the things she?s gotten right just in recent years, from the pandemic (she partially funded the Moderna vaccine) to Black Lives Matter to LGBTQ-allyship. She?s amazing. The one thing I?ll knock her for is that she was always a beautiful woman she says ?I wasn?t a natural beauty,? but she absolutely was. And still is, her beauty shines through no matter what.

Dolly Parton is consistently one of the best interviews in the world, but I would be remiss if I didn?t remind people of her iconic Marie Claire interview a few years ago, conducted by RuPaul. Go back and look at those quotes and laugh. She out-drag-queen?d RuPaul, she talked about her antique wigs, she confessed to getting up at 3 am and starting to work crazy-early. She also talked about feeling like she needed to be ?street-ready? at all times, meaning that she always has her ?face? on (makeup) and a wig ready. She always has heels ready to go too. It was an amazing interview. Well, Dolly recently chatted with Insider and she?s still talking about how she?s a crazy early-riser and how she loves cheap products. When I say I stan?
Dolly Parton may be working 9 to 5, but shes actually getting up much earlier than that! During an interview with Insider that published on Sunday, the country music legend opened up about the simplicity of her morning routine, revealing that she hops out of bed at 3 a.m. every day.
I dont need a whole lot of sleep, Parton, 76, told the outlet. I go to bed pretty early, but even if Ive been up late ? its just kind of like a little clock inside of me that says its 3 oclock!
I do some of my best work there, but I get enough sleep, the country music legend added. I dont require as much sleep as a lot of other people do, thats kind of a Parton family trait.
Parton went on to explain that she starts her morning like most people, with a skin-care routine. However, she doesnt have any tips or tricks to looking energized throughout the day, admitting, I dont do any big rituals with my skin or anything.
I dont think you have to pay a ton of money to have good products, she said. Most of the products that cost less are just as good, and sometimes better than the ones that cost a fortune. I dont buy for fame. I just buy the ones that work for me.
The Jolene singer simply attributed her good skin to her inability to tan when she was younger.
I never got out in the sun, Parton told Insider. I dont have a lot of the same problems that women my age do cause I never baked myself in the sun. I wouldve if Id been able to tan but I couldnt, so now Im glad!

It drives me crazy that there are people in this world who can wear a full face of makeup all day, every day and still have good skin. Like, I would break out like crazy if I wore makeup with any regularity, much less every day. But the other stuff? I use cheap drug store products too. I?m not paying $200 for a nightcream, I?m sorry. I?m convinced that the $30 stuff works just as well, if not better. As for Dolly being an early riser? I am too. I only get up at 3 am if my cats wake me (which they do, often). But I can wake up at 4 am or 4:30 and be pretty functional. I can write coherent posts within minutes of waking up too. I can?t really explain it. But even though I?m an early riser, that means I do try to go to bed earlier and earlier. I need a good six or seven hours of sleep most of the time.

Dolly Parton already has many hyphens after her name. Obviously, she?s a singer/songwriter. She?s also an actress and a producer who?s owned several production companies. She has The Dollywood Company that oversees her land holdings and theme parks. And of course she?s a philanthropist who founded The Dollywood Foundation. But as we?ve come to learn from Dolly, she wasn?t done. Now she?ll add author to her growing list of titles. It was just announced that Dolly teamed with best-selling author James Patterson to write a thriller called Run, Rose, Run about a country singer trying to escape her past. And not only are we getting a book from this, Dolly wrote an accompanying album to be released alongside it.
In February 2020, James Patterson flew to Nashville to visit Dolly Parton.
She was a fan of his ?Alex Cross? thrillers, and he had a proposal for her: Would she work with him on a novel about an aspiring country singer who goes to Nashville to seek her fortune and escape her past?
Parton loved the idea. Two days later, she sent Patterson notes on the plot ? along with lyrics for seven new songs that she wrote, based on the story.
?She didn?t want to get involved in something just to put her name on it. She really wanted to be involved,? Patterson said in an interview on Wednesday. ?She?s not going to do something if she doesn?t think she?s going to do it well.?
In March, Little, Brown plans to publish ?Run, Rose, Run,? a collaboration between Patterson and Parton, in print, e-book and audio editions. The novel, about a young singer with a dark secret that inspires her music, draws on Parton?s experiences in country music.
Parton will simultaneously release an album, also titled ?Run, Rose, Run,? featuring 12 new songs inspired by the novel. The songs are ?based on the characters and situations in the book,? Parton said in a news release, and the lyrics are threaded throughout the novel.
In the news release announcing the book, Little, Brown seemed giddy over the commercial prospects of a multimedia project targeting Patterson and Parton?s audiences: ?This dual release will mark the first time a #1 best-selling author and an entertainment icon who has sold well over 100 million albums worldwide have collaborated on a book and an album.?

For those who?ve followed Patterson?s career, he frequently collaborates with other people. Arguably his most successful collaboration has been with Maxine Paetro, but the two books he wrote with Bill Clinton were very popular. I?m not a huge Patterson-the-author fan. I?m qualifying that because I find him quite entertaining in interviews. I?m not saying he?s not good, I?ve just stopped reading him. But my gawd is he a prolific writer. I don?t know how he has time to do anything else. However, I will read this. The fact that Dolly had input, and the story draws from her experience is enough to sell me on it. Patterson said they worked together for months, on scenes and ?going back and forth on chapters and notes,? so he?s not just slapping her name on it. He said the collaboration was a natural one because, ?we both consider ourselves storytellers.? That?s why the accompanying album is such a draw, its telling the story in both their languages. What I didn?t know was that Patterson also has a reading and literacy non-profit like Dolly. Knowing that profits are supporting that makes me side-eye his voluminous output less.
Patterson also said, ?people love (Dolly.)? Well, duh. I?m just glad to know he?s one of them. Speaking of loving Dolly, maybe they can have a book signing in her office building in Nashville. She recently said she used the royalties from Whitney Houston?s version of I Will Always Love You to invest in an office complex in a Black neighborhood in Tennessee. She saw it as, ?Im going to be down here with her people, who are my people as well.? She considers it, ?The house that Whitney built.? Buy this woman?s book. She deserves every good thing that happens to her!

Dolly Parton continues to prove that not only is she a savvy philanthropist but that she still got it. Dolly gave $1 million to Moderna for research for the COVID vaccine. Dolly also recreated her Playboy cover shoot to celebrate her her husband Carl Thomas Deans 79th birthday. Now Dolly is stepping into the world of beauty. Specifically, she is launching her first signature fragrance for HSN called Scent From Above. Dolly said the fragrance smells heavenly and that she wanted to make something that was a combination of several scents. According to Dolly the scent is both soft and feminine but also long wearing. Dolly also released a theme song for her scent called Sent From Above. Below are a few more details via People:
The 9 to 5 singer made her first foray into fragrance with the debut of Scent from Above, available now exclusively at HSN.com in a spray ($59), rollerball ($20) and body cream ($30).
I wanted it to smell like heaven, kind of soft and cloud-like, Parton tells PEOPLE exclusively of the fragrance, which combines notes of mandarin, peony blossoms, jasmine, vanilla, sandalwood, musk, patchouli, and more. Thats why we call it Scent from Above! I thought that was a real good name for it.
She had strong opinions about what the fragrance should be: Not one of those perfumes that when you wake up in the middle of the night ? its too strong, it almost keeps you awake, she said.
Instead, I like it to smell soft and feminine. But I like it to last too. I like it to be where its like, Ooh, what is that? I love that, she said. I like it to smell just like something you would want to wear. This one you feel like youre laying on a cloud. It smells good!
Instead of finding one scent she loves and making it her signature, Parton says shes always been someone who combines different perfumes.
People used to follow me around all through the years saying, What are you wearing? It smells so good. I said, Well, its a whole lot of different things, so well just call it Dolly.

I read the ingredients for Dollys perfume and it is right up my alley. I love woodsy, spicy and sweet scents. Fragrances with complicated and layered notes are my jam. And I am not mad that Dolly is selling her fragrance exclusively on HSN or that she wants to make several fragrances. Having her first fragrances sold exclusively through HSN will make it easier for those with limited incomes in the U.S. to purchase. I am sure they will be allowed to purchase it on a payment plan (old school I know, but it works). I feel like I can imagine what Dolly would smell like if I hugged her by reading the notes in Scent From Heaven. While I understand why Dolly decided to go the route of the Home Shopping Network for her first fragrance, I hope Dollys subsequent fragrances have a wider distribution. I believe everyone should have a little piece of Dollys fabulousness in their lives. If Dollys fragrance was created with the same thoughtfulness as her music then I am sure it will be a hit across generations. I look forward to trying it out.

Late last year Dolly Parton passed on the opportunity to be memorialized with a statue at the Tennessee state capitol. People are finding other ways to give Dolly her roses while she is still with us. Jenis ice cream collaborated with Dolly to create a flavor to benefit Dolly?s charity, the Imagination Library. Sales of the limited edition Dolly flavor, Strawberry Pretzel Pie, crashed Jenis site in the first 24 hours. At least one of the people lucky enough to score a pint at $12 is trying to sell it for $1000 on Ebay. Below is more on the story from WREG:
The limited-run of Dolly Parton?s Strawberry Pretzel Pie Ice Cream by Jeni?s Splendid Ice Cream was so popular that it caused the company?s site to crash on Thursday.
A statement on jenis.com said the site experienced 50 times more users than it typically sees.
Some of the lucky few that were able to snag one of the 10,000 pints are looking to make a profit off the dessert that benefits Dolly?s Imagination Library.
One pint of the stuff was for sale on Ebay for $1,000 on Friday.
One fan could not resist tasting the frozen treat with layers of salty pretzel streusel, cream cheese ice cream and strawberry sauce, but is selling the remaining carton.
That purchase will set you back $25.
Jeni?s Ice Cream says they will give a 48-hour notice on social media and via email before sales resume on jenis.com once the ordering website is fixed. Sales are limited to two pints per order.

This is one of the most ridiculous stories I have read. First of all, how in the world is anyone selling a pint of ice cream for $12? Ima need there to be 14k gold flakes in it for that price. I am low key hating on folks who can actually afford a $12 pint of ice cream and at the same time, even if I was rich I dont think I could bring my cheap ass to cough up $12 for ice cream. At least the purchase is going towards a good cause.
The Dolly flavor sounds amazing. Strawberries, cream cheese ice cream and pretzel streusel sound divine. like a crunchy strawberry cheesecake. Besides my incredulity at the original price, I like that a portion of sales go to Dollys Imagination Library program. I have heard amazing things about her charity. Giving a child the gift of reading is beautiful in my book (no pun intended). The fact that people are trying to charge $1000 for a pint of ice cream is insane. And those crazy enough to pay $25 for a carton and not even get the chance to taste the ice cream is even more insane. I hope those who want to buy the $12 pint will be able to purchase theirs legitimately from the site when the flavor is available again. This story is a testament to the popularity and love we have for Dolly Parton. May she always reign in our hearts.

Dolly Parton recently turned 75. It feels like we?ve been getting a lot of Dolly-themed retrospectives over the past year, but I don?t think it?s just about the big milestone birthday. I think Dolly has just been open to looking back on her decades-long career in film and music and she?s always looking to stay relevant with the next generation. That?s probably why she?s signed up for the Netflix deal a few years ago, and why she?s been more open lately. I mean, Dolly is a national/international treasure. Surely, she?s one of the few people everyone can agree on: Dolly is the best. Well, Dolly decided to sit down with Oprah for AppleTV?s The Oprah Conversation, which is just one long-form interview. They discussed being childfree and plastic surgery and a lot of other stuff:
Her freedom without kids: Since I had no kids, and my husband was pretty independent, I had freedom. So I think a big part of my whole success is the fact that I was free to work. I didnt have children because I believed that God didnt mean for me to have kids so everybodys kids could be mine, so I could do things like Imagination Library because if I hadnt had the freedom to work, I wouldnt have done all the things Ive done. I wouldnt be in a position to do all of the things Im doing now.
Whether she believes there were more sacrifices than rewards in her career: Ive made sacrifices, but I think, like I said, I believe what I know Im supposed to do.
Her approach to aging. I dont think about my life in terms of numbers. First of all, I aint never gonna be old because I aint got time to be old. I cant stop long enough to grow old, she shared with a laugh. Parton went on to say that shes going to be the best I can be at whatever age. I bet you I wont look much different when Im 95, if I live that long, because Im like the Gabor sisters. Im gonna look like a cartoon. Ill have on the makeup. Ill look as young as my plastic surgeons will allow me and [with] all the makeup and lighting and all that. But I think more than anything, its about what comes from inside you. Its an attitude, and you gotta shine from within. Sometimes, that can make you feel young and make you seem young to other people.?

It?s interesting to me that Oprah would ask Dolly about being childfree, since Oprah is also childfree. Two of (arguably) the most famous, powerful and beloved women in the world, and both of them chose not to be mothers. I always wondered if Dolly always knew that she wouldn?t have kids though I mean, consider her generation, consider the pressure to have a certain kind of life and branding within country music and all of that. She must have gotten the ?are you going to have kids? questions for years and years.
As for all of the plastic surgery talk? Dolly gets away with so much because she?ll always be the first person to admit it, to talk about what she?s gotten done and now the plastic surgery is part of her brand too.
