I remember, years ago, reading an interview with Marisa Tomei and she just came across as one of the coolest women ever. Not in a ?Cool Girl? way, but in a ?she genuinely DGAF what you think? way. I remember she was chatting about picking up guys at Fleet Week in New York (when all the sailors port) and how she has a huge group of girlfriends, and she was too busy and having too much fun to settle down. But something happened Marisa got to that age where she began to get tons of scripts and offers to play ?the mom? or ?the mother figure.? And she started to take a few of those roles and now those are the only scripts she gets. She chatted with Collider about playing Pete Davidson?s mom in The King of Staten Island, and playing Aunt May in Spider-Man and all that. Some highlights:
On playing moms/mom-figures now: ?I really regret starting down this road and I really regret starting to do that. I was, you know, talked into it ? not this, but I mean just that change ? and I really always felt like, ?Oh, I could play a lot of things.? Honestly, it?s probably more of a stretch than other things. [Laughs] But, it?s ? yeah, I guess I said it all.?
Why she agreed to start playing mom roles: ?I think every actor and actress has a lot of dimensions to them and if the scope of what is being written and being made is narrow, and you want to keep working, you do what you can. I mean, I do. I tried it. It was maybe not the right road, but you know, I do try to make the most of it.?
What kinds of roles she would prefer: ?I mean, even genres that I would love to be in, you know? The femme fatale, and in a noir. I still think there are other aspects of even romantic comedies. I really love them, but you know really at a screwball level. There?s so many, many ? the breadth of as much as women are, there?s so many roles.?

Now I feel bad for her. I mean, yes, she?s playing a ?MILF? for a lot of teenage boys? fantasies, but it must be the absolute worst to want to work and then she ended up getting typecast in mom roles. And she?s right she?s a gifted comedienne and a great romantic lead, and a great actress overall. It?s Hollywood?s issue they can?t see a hot 50-something woman as anything other than a Hot Mom. Also: did you know that Marisa is 55 years old? Jesus Christ. Replace all of the Columbus statues with statues of Marisa Tomei.

The Costume Designers Institute Awards were last night and there was so much fun fashion there. As Kaiser pointed out to me the makeup was bad overall though. You can see the list of winners on Variety and they include some of my favorites. Crazy Rich Asians won for contemporary film, Black Panther won for scifi/fantasy, and The Favourite got the award for period film. Kaiser/Chandra and I are going to talk about that on the podcast thats out next Monday. (Its an episode with bonus content as its coming out the day after the Oscars.) We both loved the costuming in The Favourite, and Chandra especially loved the film.
Marisa Tomei was in a green Dundas gown with a deep v-neck, puffy sleeves, a giant brooch-like detail at the waist and a crazy green and purple floral bird print with gold jagged stripes over it. My god I love this. Its so wonderfully 80s and while it is tacky I would wear the hell out of this. She looks amazing.
Look at Judith Light! She has been killing it this awards season, or maybe forever and I havent noticed until now. I dont have a designer on this gown but check out how shes working it. It fits her like a glove and I love the intricate design with the heart-like bodice.
Presenter Halle Berry was in a structured Ruth E. Carter gown featuring incredible detailing and a pencil skirt that flared out at the sides and waist. I love this, its so dramatic. The look calls for bolder styling though. Ruth E. Carter is the fashion designer for Black Panther, which so expertly combined futuristic and traditional African design. This reminds me a little of the scifi show Halle was on a few years ago, Extant. I really enjoyed that and the fashion was fun too. (Different designers worked on that though, I checked.)

I love Marisa Tomei. She?s the best. She just seems like a throwback in so many ways she?s an old-school New Yorker who never left the city to live full-time in LA. She doesn?t look plastic. She?s a big supporter of independent filmmakers. She moves between small productions and big studio films with ease. She?s 53 years old and vivacious, funny and cool. Tomei sat down with The Cut to talk about her new projects (The First Purge and Behold My Heart), and she ended up talking about patriarchy and Harvey Weinstein. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:
On Hollywood patriarchy: ?Oh my God, these are scary times! One of the best things about this moment is that actresses are talking to each other. We?re so alone most of the time on a set ? I cannot even tell you, with every cell of my body, how wonderful it is to be in communication with people I?ve admired all these years but never had a chance to get into this kind of stuff with. Just today I was able to reach out to someone to ask her advice about a negotiation. I never would have done that before!
Whether she feels pay parity stories & predator stories are connected: ?Yes. Both things are telling you that you?re not worth very much ? that you?re disposable? It?s probably economics. You?re gonna pay people who are just starting out a lot less, so try to get rid of the people who?ve been around and replace them with a cheaper, fresh face that probably saves time in make up. But also, when you?re older, you have more opinions. You?re more able to to speak up. You have experience and the experience does count for something ? you?re worth something and you want to have a conversation about things, and it?s probably just a headache for some people.
It also has a lot to do with internalized misogyny: ?I think it has to do with internalized misogyny! More than anything else. But I?m trying to break it down to what could maaaaybe be the justification, like, ?Oh, it makes sense on paper.? But no, I think it?s absolutely just internalized misogyny. But even now, speaking to you about this, I feel vulnerableI have all of these little negative voices, doubts, and it makes it ? it?s my internalized misogyny ? like, ?You don?t know what you?re talking about.?
On being a character actress: ?Well, I never intended to get into only supporting roles ? [Laughs] that wasn?t really my goal. My feeling was, all roles are great and it?s just what you want to do with it and whether you want to be part of a certain project or you feel like this would be a fun character to try on. Usually the ?wing man? has a lot more interest, is funnier, has a lot more character. I want to know that person?s life and their insides.
She knew the Harvey Weinstein story was coming: ?I knew that it was coming, but not to the degree that it was coming. I had been interviewed for it because I had worked with Harvey when I was 21, and someone had seen me crying on the set. Word got back to the reporters, and they thought maybe they should talk to me. No, [I wasn?t named] because I just told them, ?I probably cried every day when I was 21.? I am sure it was just something else. But I did call some of my longtime girlfriends to ask, ?Did something happen that I am actually not remembering right now?? Because I know I would have told them. And nothing overt did.

?Both things are telling you that you?re not worth very much ? that you?re disposable.? That?s it in a nutshell, and I applaud Marisa and The Cut for acknowledging the connection of those two issues. There was a reason why Time?s Up sprang from Me Too, and it?s because of that connection. Women have been treated like garbage across the board, to being harassed and abused and assaulted, to being chronically underpaid. All because the patriarchy which women do internalize says that girls and women are disposable.

Whenever I see Marisa Tomei on talk shows, she always seems like such a cool woman with a great attitude about life. After winning her Oscar for My Cousin Vinny, I think people expected her to never live up to that early success, but she stayed in New York, worked constantly on a variety of different projects, aged gracefully, got nominated for another Oscar and? I don?t know, she just seems to have a great life. Well, I didn?t even know she was dating the young hottie and Tom Hardy look-alike Logan Marshall Green, but they?ve been together for a while, and now he?s proposed! So Marisa is going to get married for the first time at the age of 48. Mazel tov!
She was waiting for that special someone. And now Marisa Tomei is set to walk down the aisle for the very first time after accepting her boyfriend’s proposal. The Wrestler star’s groom-to-be is actor Logan Marshall Green, star of the summer blockbuster Prometheus.
The Oscar winning star, 48, and Logan spent a festive holiday season together and that’s when the 36-year-old actor popped the question.
‘He popped the question over the holidays,’ a source told In Touch. ‘She is very happy about the engagement.’
The couple has been dating on and off since 2008 after meeting while working on a New York theater project together. Marisa has previously insisted she saw no real good reason to get married or have children.
‘I’m not that big a fan of marriage as an institution, and I don’t know why women need to have children to be seen as complete human beings,’ Marisa told Manhattan Magazine in 2009.
Obviously, she just couldn’t resist Logan’s proposal.

Yay! Should we talk about the age difference? I don?t really care about it in this case ? they?re both old enough to know the score, you know? It doesn?t feel like anyone is being misled or inexperienced or anything. It doesn?t feel like Marisa is some prowling cougar either ? my impression is that she probably never thought she?d get married because the institution wasn?t for her. She only changed her mind when she met her Forever Dong. Praise it!

Opening up about stripping down with her castmates, Marisa Tomei dished about skinnydipping with George Clooney during her visit with Conan O?Brien last night (September 27).
While she hit the set for what was to be an "Ides of March" press stop, the 46-year-old actress' conversation quickly turned to her naked plunge into Lake Como with her co-stars George Clooney, Charlie Rose and Evan Rachel Wood.
While chatting about her time at Clooney's Italian mansion, Marisa told, ?George kind of? we would up all skinny dipping, let?s just cut to the chase!?
As for why the sans-clothing swim occurred, she cites a famous former news anchor, explaining, ?George said, ?Walter Conkrite was here, when Conkrite was here he jumped in the lake! And he did it on the second night. Now, we?re here on the first night, we?re having wine, we?re having a beautiful dinner.? So, he throws the gauntlet down. ?Are you guys going to jump in the lake on the first night? Are you gonna top Conkrite???
Miss Tomei added, "[Conkrite] jumped in in full tux. So, the only way too really top that was to go the whole other way!?

Technical awards hostess Marisa Tomei wore this navy blue 1950 Charles James couture dress from Lily et Cie with a conservative neckline and an asymmetrical tulle skirt. I don’t think that photos do this dress justice at all, and I found it lovely on camera. She told TV Guide’s Chris Harrison that it’s been in her closet for a while and she’s been “waiting to wear it.” Kaiser disliked this dress, and I think I can assume that she found it too fussy and ballgown. I thought it was amazing, and a kind of homage to that era without looking too dated. She accessorized with bold Van Cleef and Arpels starburst drop earrings and a matching bracelet.
Tomei’s makeup was too understated for my taste for big event like this, and she followed the makeup trend of the evening by going for a very minimal, muted palate that could have been enhanced with some bolder strokes. (It looks better in photos than it did on screen.) Sandra Bullock similarly had simple makeup. I loved Tomei’s loose wavy hair though, which followed her trend of looking like a throwback goddess without trying too hard. She was gorgeous.
At the Vanity Fair Oscars party Tomei wore a bold fuschia one-shoulder dress with a side pocket and heavy black bangles. That dress was daring and I found the jewelry too much when paired with the bright color. She looked hot though and any complaints I might have about that dress and jewelry combination are minor. I also love that she is 46 and does not look waxy, puffy or at all fake.

Let me preface this by saying I don’t know anything about fashion. I know more about quantum physics than I do women’s clothing. But, was anyone reminded of Tarsem Singh’s The Cell last night when they saw Marisa Tomei in her crazy dress? Put two horns on her and Jennifer Lopez cowering in fear and you’d probably think you were back in that acid trip of a movie. Comparison video down below. Fast forward to somewhere in the middle. I guess her dress wasn’t as flowy, but whatever.

In “The Wrestler,” actress Marisa Tomei plays the stripper girlfriend of an aging wrestler played by Mickey Rourke. Marisa, 44, says she prepared for the raunchy role by taking pole dancing lessons and watching the skanky hos on the VH1 reality show, “Rock of Love.”
Oscar winner Marisa Tomei studied rocker BRET MICHAELS’ raunchy reality show ROCK OF LOVE as part of her stripper research for new movie THE WRESTLER.
The actress tried pole dancing too - just to make sure she’d look authentic in her film debut as an exotic dancer.
She explains, “I had a friend who is a yoga teacher and she does a lot of pole dancing so I asked her to teach me. I went to a lot of clubs and watched to see the different styles of dancing.
“I would practice in a dance room with a bar and a mirror, like a ballet studio. I watched Rock of Love, that reality show with Bret Michaels, where he’s trying to get a wife and they’re all strippers. That was my closest association to the actual world of it.”
And her brief flirtation with the world of the stripper has brought Tomei a new love: “I like going to strip clubs now.”

Well, it’s nice to know that piece of garbage show isn’t totally useless. I’ve always liked Marisa - she’s a talented actress. She went through a dry spell for a while there, so it’s nice to see her working again. Early buzz is that Mickey Rourke’s performance is a powerhouse in this movie. He plays a professional wrestler - based on Hulk Hogan and Randy “Macho Man ” Savage who is trying to make a comeback - sort of like Rocky. If it sounds like a stinker, keep in mind that the director is Darren Aronofsky, the director behind “Requiem for a Dream,” “Pi” and “The Fountain.” So, if nothing else, it will be a great looking stinker about pro wrestling and stripping.

Despite being 44, Marisa Tomei still has a tight body. That’s why when she plays a stripper and gets naked in The Wrestler, I’m not throwing up in my mouth. If this was any other 40-year-old, I’d curl up in the fetal position and curse god for the power of sight. But, no. This is a pleasant surprise. Just like when you order six piece chicken mcnuggets and discover they gave you seven pieces. Pics NSFW.
